Claims that the capture took place on August 3, 1704 are one day OUT! The battle for ‘The Rock‘ started August 3 but the Spanish garrison did not capitulate until the next day, i.e., August 4.

Also note that it was NOT a straightforward British conquest as is often assumed. To start with it was a British-Dutch fleet that captured it and it was done on behalf of Austria!

Britain did not get ‘Gib’ did 9 years later, in 1713.

“Huggins Fair 2017”, Wolfeboro, N.H. Will Be On Friday, August 4 & Saturday, August 5.

by Anura Guruge

Note, it is, by tradition, strictly a Friday & Saturday event; first Friday of August, rain, shine, hail or hurricane. If you go on Sunday all you will find these days are empty tents. Up until 6 – 7 years ago the huge book tent would still have all the unsold books in it and you were encouraged to take as many away — for free. Now they have exchange students from abroad, staying at Brewster over the Summer, come and clear the books away Saturday night.

Unless it is beyond torrential rains we will be there late on Saturday, as we always are — even in heavy downpours.

See you there.
