Seeing This Burnt Jaguar In The Australian Bushfires Was Upsetting.

by Anura Guruge

Saw it on Facebook.

Yes. Yes. Yes. I know. I don’t need to be told. I am only semi-stupid, not totally. I understand and appreciate that in the scheme of things a burnt up Jag is the least of the problems facing the Australians with these raging bushfires.

That said and noted, it is still distressing to see, what must have been a rather nice Jag, XJ8 or XJ12, destroyed. Another one, alas, bites the dust.

The reason I have two is that I am trying to preserve them for posterity. Enough said.

You Won’t Believe The ‘Rude’ Names Of The ‘Hot Sauces’ Available On Amazon.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. I blurred out one word since there are words that I refuse to use. SMILE. My blog, my standards. SMILE.

A picture for the first bottle shown above (yes, with the first word blurred) turned up on my Facebook timeline. It intrigued me because I have been helping a good friend that just bought a hot sauce company. We have been playing around with provocative names BUT I could never be this crude. I thought it was a joke. But, to make sure did a quick Google. Wow. It is real. Made in Australia which would explain the name. But, here was the kicker. It was available from Amazon. Here is the link. I kid you not.

Then, as is Amazon’s wont, they showed me other recommendations. That is where I found these. Had to share them with you. What do YOU think?

The New Series ‘Jennie’, About Winston Churchill’s American Mother, On ‘Acorn’ TV, Is Quite The Story.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the ‘Acorn’ TV homepage for this new series.

I saw it being advertised on the banner of ‘Acorn‘ for the last week or so — but, I think it only became available today. We watched Episode 1 and it was GOOD.

Alas, though new to Acorn, it is NOT new. Appears it was shown on Thames in 2009 — so, 10-years ago. So, the quality, alack, is not that of ‘Victoria‘ on PBS. But, it is not dreadful. It is better than what you will find of YouTube.

I knew a bit about her suitor and husband Lord Randolph Churchill given that he is my hero Winston’s father. So, I learnt a fair amount about both of them in this first episode — how they met, their whirlwind romance and ahead-of-schedule marriage. I am looking forward to watching the rest of the series.

Looks very promising and I know that Lord Randolph’s story gets more colorful, though sad.

Australian ‘Mystery Road’ Detective Series On ‘Acorn’ Is Intriguing & Educational.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the ‘Acorn’ Webpage for this series.

Found it, like so many other gems on ‘Acorn‘, while browsing the catalog looking for good mystery/detective shows. Looked interesting and it sure has been.

We became addicted to ‘A Place To Call Home‘ on Acorn — which was Australian and set in Australia. ‘Mystery Road‘ shares that trait.

Tight, gripping, intriguing. Powerful, in-your-face characters. The mystery is set within an aboriginal community. That is the educational part. we have not had that much exposure to modern day aboriginal life and this show takes you there — in spades. Reminds me, very much, of the Navajos and life in and around my beloved Canyon de Chelly. The male detective is ‘BLACK’ — i.e., an aborigine. That gives it all a nice twist. He has a colorful past too.

We have only watched the first 4 episodes. But, they were good. I can’t wait to go back and finish the series. I think I will not be disappointed.

The Diary Of Anne Frank

“A Place To Call Home”, The Australian “Downton Abbey”, NEW Season 6 + New Season 5 Episodes.

by Anura Guruge

On “Acorn TV” in the U.S. acorn.tv/placetocallhome/series6

I had NOT checked ‘Acorn TV‘, on my Roku 3, for a couple of months. We have had plethora of other TV to watch during ‘Family TV hour’.

Last night, on a whim, I decided to check ‘Acorn’.

A Place to Call Home” Series 6 was being featured. That pleased me no end. I had thought that it would not be here till Thanksgiving, as was the case with Series 5 last year. I am glad I was wrong.

So, this evening we sat back and got ready to enjoy Series 6 Episode 1.

But, when they did their usual “Previously …” we were LOST. We didn’t remember any of what they were talking about. So, we went back to Series 5. Looks like there are 5 episodes we had missed, viz., 8 – 12. Not sure how that was possible. We watched Episodes 1 – 7 every week and we would have gone back for 8. My feeling is that they were added later.

NOT complaining. More to watch. And that is always a good thing with this addictive show. It really is worth watching. So many clever twists and turns.

So, we are happy. Especially Teischan. She loves it.

Huge Changes To TV Cricket In Australia, With Kerry Packer’s Channel 9 Losing Out.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. From “BBC Sport”. Google “Australia cricket TV” for more …

Despite the timing it is NOT directly related to the ‘ball tampering‘ scandal, THOUGH Steve Smith could end up, ironically, as “Fox Sports” commentator. That is how I got to learn about it. Smith was in New York talking to “Fox Sports”. There is no shame these days.

Channel 9, Kerry Packer’s station, is losing rights to Test Matches after 40-years — bar the 2019 Ashes in England, which was exempt, because it had been previously negotiated.

“Fox Sports” has muscled in.

End of what was a long era.

So much of cricket today, One-Day Internationals in colored clothing and T20, can be traced back to Kerry Packer and his “World Series Cricket” in the late 1970s. I hated Packer for what he did to my beloved cricket at the time. Decades later, when everything was finally patched up, I grudgingly forgave him since he wasn’t all bad. He must be rolling in his grave.

Anywho … Now you know what is happening Down Under.

My New Definition Of ‘Hubris’ — Thanks To The Australian Ball Scratchers.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and study. From Wikipedia — “hubris”.

Hubris‘ is a word that I am fond of, but have hitherto not used often because I was, until now, never sure whether I would nail it, exactly.

Not anymore.

Thanks to the ball tampering, cheating Australian bums, I now have the perfect — spot on — mental imagery for HUBRIS.

“Sudden, unexpected and precipitous downfall caused by brash, overconfidence”. BINGO. Nailed the Australian bums.

These two, captain and vice-captain, behaved, until today, as if they were immortal. Modern day gods immune to the travails of man. Not anymore. They have been sent packing, home, their sorry balls between their legs.

Hubris.

So, join me in remembering hubris in future — white Australian bums and the balls they scratch. Easy enough. Fairly graphic mental picture.

“We Cheat At Cricket” YouTube Video From Australian Radio Station — V. Funny & Spot On.

by Anura Guruge

Though I love to call them ‘White Bums‘, which might be Freudian, I actually, by and large, like Australians. They have a great sense of humor and this video is ample testament.

There is a lot of great ‘spoof’ material coming out of Australia, over the last 48-hours. I tried to post some, BUT I really don’t have the time. So, please look around. The U.K. Daily Mail is a good place to start. Enjoy. 4th Test starts this Friday. That should be interesting.
