Amazon Packaging Is Socially Irresponsible!

by Anura Guruge

A set of 4 TINY watch straps pins
that I received today!

EXACTLY as it arrived.

Nothing removed, nothing rearranged. Untouched.

There was NO packing. Nothing to break.

This was it.

The little packed had slipped under the bottom flaps!

The ITEM!

This is irresponsible.

I just could NOT believe it. I knew what was inside. I was expecting it.

This is BEYOND crazy.

A tiny package of unbreakable stuff. It should have gone in a padded envelope.

This makes me very upset and annoyed — especially as an Amazon shareholder.

UPDATE

I tweeted this post and copied Amazon. They responded.
They have a PACKAGING FEEDBACK process — here is the link.
I used it. Pretty neat.

Send them the pictures and feedback. Now YOU know.

Amazon Still Profligate In Its Packaging.

This is CRAZY.

This is irresponsible.

It was not fragile. There was nothing to break. These could have been easily shipped in a padded envelope.

Waste of resources. Yes, the air doesn’t weigh much BUT the box takes up space on planes, trucks and in the USPS vehicles. Plus the cardboard (which, to be fair, we recycle).

I have complained before about Amazon (as you can see below), and I do so as HUGE fan, a loyal customer and above all a very-happy shareholder (of AMZN).

UPS, cleverly, tried to get Amazon to be better by changing their pricing to include package DIMENSIONS as well as weight. Well, Amazon doesn’t use UPS that much, anymore! This was sent via USPS.

IRS ‘Free File Fillable Forms’: Two Changes To 2016 e-File Process.

by Anura Guruge

Continues to work, and work very well.

Just filed, yes, e-Filed, my 2016 IRS Tax return using “Free File Fillable Forms“, on Friday — this my 7th year using them.

No real problems other than me screwing up two things that e-File pre-processing picked up.

But, noticed two (2) BIG changes in the e-File process.

I guess this is to enhance filing security after the fraudulent e-File claim scandals of the last couple of years.

So, here are the two changes:

1/ You have to include Driver’s License information.

2/ There is CAPTCHA human verification before you are allowed to enter e-Filing.

The first, i.e., requiring further identification, in this instance Driver’s License (or State-issued ID) data makes sense though it was a pain to go get our licenses. Having to enter the issued date really does make the difference. You couldn’t fudge that.

But, I am confused by the CAPTCHA. That is only to ensure human participation. I didn’t realize that there had been a problem of automated, robotic filings. Wow.

Way Excessive Packaging By Amazon.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, I know that people have been complaining about this, vehemently, for years. I also know that UPS changed their pricing, within the last 18 months, to reflect VOLUME as well as weight to curb Amazon’s penchant for this type of grossly wasteful packaging.

This was crazy. One plastic bottle of fiber capsules. Nothing breakable. Yes, susceptible to some crushing but even that would not have been serious. Not sure how the packaging is done — meaning whether it is human or automated. But this has to STOP.

Comet C/2011 L4 (Pan-STARRS): Where To Spot In The Northern Skies.

Comet C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) will be visible to Northern hemisphere observers near the cresent moon on March 12th. This ‘map’ provided by NASA. Click to ENLARGE.

Another image from NASA, but this seen down-under in Australia. Click to ENLARGE. To see it as they saw it in Oz, you will have to stand on your head or turn your monitor upside down.

Another image, again down under. Now you know the drill. Click to ENLARGE. Somehow rotate the image to get the Australian view.

Perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) is today, March 10, 2013. As it turns around the Sun it also crosses the celestial equator, moving from the southern skies to the ones that really count — the northern skies, i.e., US. People are already seeing it — those close to the equator, such as my brethren in Sri Lanka getting early dibs.

As I have said before March 12 & 13 should be particularly good since the crescent Moon will provide a good reference. Try and get to a high point, like a small hill, so that you can see over trees — if you live in the country.

Enjoy. I will try and keep you posted.

Here are two useful links: NASA & Space Weather.

C/2011 L4 (Pan-STARRS) over South Africa — last week.

C/2011 L4 as indicated by its official designation was discovered in 2011, on June 6, 2011.

It was discovered ‘robotically’ [i.e., by automated, computer software scanning digital images] by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) initiative whose telescopes are located at the summit of Mount Haleakala on Maui, Hawaii. Hence the parenthetical name ‘Pan-STARRS’.

Calling it Comet Pan-STARRS is wrong and meaningless!

The Pan-STARRS program, an automated survey of the sky, discovers comets at a rapid rate. There are many, many comets with the parenthetical name ‘Pan-STARRS’ — this name denoting the discoverer. It is only real and unique name is C/2011 L4. Comet’s can only be named after a person involved with its discovery (or the calculation of its orbit). Comets such as this one, discovered by computer software, are not assigned a name of a person. And NO, you cannot buy its name.

Alas, it won’t be very bright. So, provided we have clear skies, next Tuesday and Wednesday, close to the Moon — around sunset.
