If I had to describe last night’s very magical, near divine,
‘The English Concert’ at the Dartmouth HOP
in two words I would use would be:
lilting & stirring.
Other words that could be used around those two
soothing, inspiring, mesmerizing, virtuosic and gratifying.
These, obviously, on top of the ‘magical’ and ‘divine’
that I had already used.
At the intermission I heard a gentleman leaving the auditorium saying: ‘Fantastic!‘
That works too.
Another huge cap in the feather for the HOP. This was yet another HOP concert where you definitely felt privileged to be a part of. During the entire 2-hour concert, other than the rousing music coming from the stage there was nary a sound from the packed audience. Everybody was watching, listening and enjoying — enthralled. This was one heck of a tour tour de force. It was very professional. Made me feel very proud to be British (though I really don’t need any excuses to feel as such).
The intermission was after the first two pieces. When it came, as is my wont, I checked my watch. It was 8:57. They have performed for ~52 minutes. It felt like only 20 minutes had elapsed. They had slowed down time! They sure transported you, quite literally, to a different age. You could just feel it. It was like a magic show done in music.
The ‘Wind Machine’ was a riot. Had everybody intrigued until it finally got its few minutes of glory. I could learn to play that.
Of course, going in, we all knew that this was a world class outfit. Well, they proved that — conclusively.
The acoustics of the HOP Spaulding Auditorium are superb. It was great setting to hear this lilting music — so different to the more ponderous ‘inspirational’ music of that era.
The Georg Philipp Telemann ‘Trumpet Concerto in D Major‘ was a revelation to me. Wow. Wow. Wow. I want to share it with you, because I know you will just love it. I can’t find it on YouTube performed by ‘The English Concert’. So I have to use another … I am sure that what we heard last night, performed by Mark Bennett was better. But, enjoy.
It has been quite a week for us in terms of top-notch entertainment.
Wednesday: UNH Chinese New Year Gala
Thursday: Clearlakes Chorale rehearsal
Friday: The English Concert.
Not bad for cold week, in the midst of winter, in New Hampshire!
