Today’s INSIGHT: Did You Know That ‘Belvedere’ Means A Building With A View?

by Anura Guruge

A belvedere. The ‘Liberty Hall’ in Machiasport, Maine (Bold Coast). See sign below, which is on the right of the stairs.

Then there was “Mr. Belvedere” the U.S. TV sitcom that I was familiar with. So, I had assumed that it was a Surname.

The Belvedere I was familiar with. Yes, at the Vatican. I had assumed (wrongly) that it was named after a cardinal who paid to have it built! Click to ENLARGE & read here. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cortile_del_Belvedere

This imposing building is in Machiasport, Maine, on Route 92 — across the road from the river (opening). I had parked the car, just south of ‘Fort O’Brien State Historic Site‘ & was exploring the area, starting with the Fort, on foot. I stop & read signs. So, I saw the sign shown at top. I had never seen ‘Belvedere’ used as such. It was obvious it was referring to the building. So, that evening when I was back at the motel (in Machias) I Googled it. WOW.

Yes, I knew ‘Belle’ was beautiful. ‘Verde’. I had seen Spanish variants in Arizona. I had never put it together. It was interesting. I wanted to share with you.

What do you think? Cool … eh?

The Unique Beauty Of Cricket: Ramdin Voids Catch, Chris Gayle Celebrates With Afghanistan Victors.

I really do not think you see this level of sportsmanship in any other sport. No wonder we have the adage “it is just not cricket” to describe ‘bad behavior’ (of the Donald Trump kind).

Earlier this year, as I documented, we had British National Hero Ian Botham wiping a tear from his eye when (black) South African youngster Temba Bavuma score his maiden century in Tests — against England. Where else would you see that. A national hero shedding a tear when somebody in the other team scores a century against their country. That was brilliant.

Then Denesh Ramdin indicating that it was NOT a fair catch AFTER the umpire gave it as OUT. There are NO REVIEWS in T20. It would have been a done deal. Even if they saw it on replays after nothing would have been said or done. It was all legit. But Ramdin voided the catch. Yes, we have seen West Indies players not say anything in other ‘questionable catch’ situations — but this was nice. Yes, I know that the outcome of this match did not matter. The West Indies had already qualified for the Semi Finals. But it was grand. Made my day.

And then to have Chris Gayle helping the victorious Afghan players celebrate. Meant a LOT to them and you could tell that. Here was a cricket superstar, from the opposition, sharing their joy. Yes, Chris Gayle did NOT play in the match — and as I just said the outcome of this match did not matter. But it was another lovely gesture. And even greater … The commentators (echoing the views of the fans) applauded. Nobody misinterpreted it as Chris Gayle not being loyal to his team. We all knew that this WAS CRICKET.

I came across these over the weekend, on Facebook, when somebody commented on my picture of Maya (on the March 27, 2016, “6 Images for the Day“). Was I impressed? I actually wanted to wear around MY neck. That would be quite the fashion accessory for I. They do come in MY neck size (15″ – 16″). So this could be my new look. As I said on Facebook, Maya and Braxton are cute enough even with cheap collars. I am the one that needs all the help — though at my age it is a lost cause and I have shed whatever shreds of vanity I ever had.

But, back to dogs. These are special. Of course given the craftsmanship involved they are not inexpensive. But they definitely seems worth it. I know that a lot of you will not think twice about getting one or more of these collars. Go for it. Enjoy.

These two were taken by Deanna.

You have already seen some of the pictures I took, at Hampton Beach, on Sunday, August 23, 2015 — the day of the supposed BIG show.

These two pictures were taken by Deanna, with her camera. In the first I am striding, purposefully as ever, towards a seated group, with what I think were two topless women, who are doing an videotaped interview with ‘Zach’ who was planning to make a documentary of the ‘Free The Female Nipple‘, New Hampshire movement.

The picture I took of this group appears at the top of this post and you can, by all means, click on it to get a better view. They wouldn’t let me take a picture of them. C’est la vie. No great loss to humanity.

I then started chatting with Zach and asked him to interview me because I wanted to go on record as to what I thought of this ‘event’. I doubt whether you will find anybody more supportive of female toplness than I. But the Hampton Beach event was lame and nothing but an ill conceived, cheap publicity stunt by a few women who were desperately seeking their ’15 minutes in the sun’ though that was hard to come by that Sunday. There is nothing to PROTEST! Toplessness is permitted in NH. Just exercise YOUR RIGHT without trying to draw attention. That is what would work.

Now we will most likely see NEW legislation — whether constitutionally valid or otherwise. This event was regressive.

What has happened since. August 23rd was 8 days ago. How many women have exercised their LEGAL RIGHT of going topless at Hampton Beach? Does anybody know? What about other beaches and parks. It does NOT have to be beaches. Parks are fine too and anybody who has walked across a park in Germany in the Summer will know that topless sunbathing, by women, is the most natural thing in the world. That is something else. The so called ‘organizers’ of this NH movement. How many of them have been to Europe and seen, first hand, what casual, ‘most natural thing in the world’ female toplessness is all about.

My point when it comes to showing the female nipple is very simple and straightforward. JUST DO IT. Don’t make a fuss about it. Don’t attract attention. Just do it.

And PLEASE don’t bring in breastfeeding into this. Yes, I have hands on experience with that too and I will contend that I have more experience than any TWO of the so called organizers put together. No, of course, I did not breastfeed BUT I was around. My youngest was breastfed for 27 months. 27 months. My oldest for over 18 months and my 2nd oldest for about 14 months. That is 59 months of breastfeeding. Close to 5 years and these kids were breastfed on planes, airports, beaches, parks, restaurants, hospitals, malls, concerts … wherever. Yes, I had words with a FEW people over those years. BUT it was never a problem. So, PLEASE … don’t confuse the issue with something that is not part of the issue.

The issue here, from my perspective is very simple. Just go ahead and do it. The law is CURRENTLY on your side.

You can’t legislate ACCEPTANCE. I know. Discrimination based on skin color is illegal. But that doesn’t stop me running into that on a near daily basis. But I am not going to cry ‘boo-hoo’ and ask for acceptance to be legislated. That will not happen. I live with it.

Was it a BUST?

We got there at 9:45 am. Yes, it was gray, damp and cloudy. It started to rain around 10:30, lightly at first but with increasing vigor. It was pretty heavy by 11:15. But since I know when to get out of the rain we were already in the car and on the way back by then.

Was it topless turmoil at Hampton Beach? Not that I noticed.

Was it mobbed? Not that I saw, but as I some of you know I have Keratoconus in at least my right eye and I don’t see that well, which is why I have so much trouble taking pictures.

I had heard that over 1,000 had indicated, on Facebook, that they planned to attend. I have seen media reports, even from yesterday, that claimed, DESPITE the dire weather report, that hundreds of people were expected at Hampton Beach. They must have all left by the time we arrived.

We saw 6 topless women — but we didn’t walk the entire beach or spend that much time there.

I did do a media interview! SMILE. More on that later.

I, as ever, could be wrong, but I think the inclement weather was the BEST thing to have happened to the Hampton Event. It gave everyone COVER.

Well, I have a book to finish. I will have more to say later, when the book is done. Yes, I am now on record, on video, saying what I had to say. Remember, I AM ALL FOR TOPLESS — without caveat. My biggest fear is that we will now encounter new legislation. I do NOT want to see the FREEDOM and RIGHTS that women enjoy TODAY being restricted. I want women to be able to go topless in New Hampshire — even in Laconia.

I gather they plan a surprise event in Laconia. Now that I can endorse. Because THERE there is something to PROTEST.

At Hampton Beach there was NOTHING to protest about. Women have their FREEDOM, they have their rights. Do not claim to be protesting. That is insulting to those that have genuine grievances. That would be like me protesting racism (which I encounter daily). No. Do not even use the word ‘protest’. CELEBRATE. You, the women of New Hampshire, have the RIGHT to go topless (other than in Laconia).

CELEBRATE. Rejoice. Lift up your tops.

The most beautiful TOPLESS thing at Hampton today.
Now that is class.

But this topless beauty made me realize, for the FIRST time in my life (as I approach my 62nd birthday in two weeks), that I have finally got old!

This Lotus is TOO small for me! Yes, I can get into our MGB without any problem, but this is even smaller than than that.

Yikes. I am finally old! What a shame.

How Many TONS Of Illegal Ivory Was Lost In The Philippines Due To Typhoon Haiyan?

Something I am sure that many people around the World don’t realize, especially in the U.S., is that the Philippines, Cebu that was the bull’s eye for the super-typhoon being the epicenter, is the global capital for illegal, blood ivory!

Moreover, much of this blood ivory is used to carve baby Jesuses — so called Santo Niños. I, the professional cynic, find it ironic that a nation that is so Catholic and think that they have to show their devotion by buying illegal ivory baby Jesuses gets SLAMMED by the storm of the century — just a few weeks after a magnitude 7.x earthquake. I think Filipinos are some of the most beautiful people in the world (and yes, I have been to the Philippines) but many of them tend to be very superstitious and unworldly. Which explains why they feel the need to buy illegal ivory idols for their supposed protection. Well, if they were more astute they would realize that the ivory idols aren’t doing much to provide them with protection.

Anyway, a year ago, on my ‘Popes-and-Papacy’ blog, I ranted about the illegal, Catholic sponsored ivory trade in the Philippines. Here are some of the posts. So before you rush off to give them millions just factor in the crimes against elephants.

‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ (For The Elderly & Beautiful): A Must Watch Movie From Britain With Some Great Indian Talent & Humor.

marigoldmovie

We have only watched 1/2 of it, but it is beyond good.

It was another free, HBO preview weekend on DISH and I recorded a bunch of movies (space limitations on our already packed DVRs the only limitation). As soon as I saw the title, never mind the description, I knew I had to record it.

It is funny and poignant at the same time.

Lots of familiar (and famous) faces.

A bit bummed that the movie and review sites don’t give due credit to the Indian STARS. They are as good as the famous Brits.

Key among them is Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire‘. Deanna, to her credit, spotted him right away. I didn’t. All brown folks look the same to me (and Deanna even chastizes me that I can’t even tell blondes apart).

Great movie. If you haven’t seen it make a point of watching it.

[Street cricket scene. The wickets were too close together. And the strokes weren’t that great. But, that is movie license.]

Kind of funny, there was another ‘Indian’ movie with a similar name, i.e., ‘Marigold‘ a few years back. We saw that too. That was good too.
