Is Ex-Pope Benedict Entitled To A Full Papal Funeral?

by Anura Guruge

I do NOT know. We are in uncharted territory. The previous pope to resign, i.e., Gregory XII, genuinely retired & went into obscurity OUTSIDE of Rome. He did NOT get a papal funeral — & from what I can see, even one due a cardinal.

I do NOT think the ex-pope is entitled to a full papal funeral.

Why?

For the very simple reason that he was NOT a pope when he died. He, by choice, was an EX-POPE.

Yes, he will be buried in St. Peter’s at the Vatican (I am sure (unless he has managed to fanagle it so that he can be buried in Germany)). I have no problem with that. As one who had been pope he is entitled to be buried in St. Peter’s.

But, to afford him a FULL papal funeral, with the 9-days of formal mourning — i.e., novendiales — would be wrong. He is an EX-pope, an the ex- was NOT because he died.

Francis already has enough trouble from this ex-pope. Affording him a full papal funeral will just exacerbate matters.

That is what I think? What do YOU think?

If Obama Was A Precedent, Pope Francis’ Rebuke Of Trump Should Guarantee The Bully The Presidency!

Despite my 10 books on popes one of the many things I have yet to fathom about popes is that despite their official title of “Christ’s Vicar on Earth“, Vicarius Christi, popes appear to be extremely impotent when it comes to influencing elections.

Obama’s reelection in 2012 was a graphic example of this impotency. Pope Benedict, his Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops, around the World, railed against Obama and his supposed infringement of religious rights (mainly because of the birth control provisions within Obamacare). Pope Benedict openly rebuked the sitting President. But he was reelected by a landslide. So if that was a precedent, Trump will do well stoking a nasty quarrel with the current pope, Francis.

People don’t turn on a dime. After 50 years of suspicion most Americans aren’t going to think of Cuba as the ‘new Canada’ overnight. Plus there are all the Cuban exiles who still have lots of issues from the past to deal with.

So despite the sudden and new detente it is going to take some time for folks to get used to the notion that Cuba is no longer a ‘bad guy’.

Consequently, that Pope Francis — and the Vatican — think that it is ‘OK’ to come to the U.S. from Cuba is somewhat puzzling and intriguing. I am sure that some are going to be offended. Worst case the pope could have gone to Cuba FROM the U.S.

Cuba is a Catholic country and both John Paul II and Benedict XVI have visited Cuba; the former visiting it on its own and the later doing so on his way to Mexico.

Was not the most diplomatic thing to do. Some, I am sure, will feel slighted.

As is becoming the norm with this maverik, unpredictable pope
there is always two-sides to most things he does.
That is appearing to be the case with his trip to the
U.S. in September 2015.

GOOD: Making peace with the U.S. nuns.
BAD: Further upsetting the Miami Cubans.

Click for ONE of my many, many posts on this subject on my “Popes and Papacy” blog. Search on ‘nuns’ once you are at the blog.

In what was a star-crossed papacy, one of the strangest things that octogenarian Benedict (#266) permitted was that of the Vatican trying to cross swords with the much respected and beloved U.S. nuns. Even without comparison to their child-abusing ‘brothers’, the U.S. nuns, by most any measure, were Saints. So the Vatican, and the pope, was on a hiding to nowhere. Popes and the Vatican, over the centuries have tried to fight many losing causes — and this still has to be up there as one of the stupidest.

Francis can be street smart, when he puts his mind to it, and making peace with the U.S. nuns AHEAD of his trip to the U.S. was indeed a clever move. The last thing he needed while in the U.S. was having the nuns ‘mad’ at him. Plus, he will be relying on the nuns to take care of him while he is here. That is how it works. So this is all very smooth stuff.

Not so, the plan to extend the U.S. trip to include Cuba. Despite all of the immense progress made re. Cuba in the last couple of months, I do NOT think the Miami Cubans are going to be happy with that move. Lets wait and see. This is just a heads up.
