RED LETTER DAY IN WORLD HISTORY. The Gregorian Calendar First Used, This Day, 435-Years Ago.

Pope Gregory XIII papal bull ‘Inter gravissimas’ in its original Latin form.

English translation of the key paragraph from Inter gravissimas. From: myweb.ecu.edu

Pretty significant day. The Papal States, France, Poland and Spain adopted the revolutionary Gregorian calendar on Thursday, October 4, 1582 — the NEXT DAY then having become Friday, October 15, 1582. Pretty incredible. 10-days were just expunged. Gone. Poof. If your birthday fell between October 5 to October 14, you were out of luck in 1582. Your birthday vanished.

In reality the adoption of the calendar did not cause much of a stir. Much of the European population, at the time, were not that concerned about daily calendars. They went by the seasons and each day as it unfolded.

But, this was a BIG day. It demarcated history’s very timeline!

Margaret Thatcher (My 2nd Favorite Female PM) Was Born This Day, 92 Years Ago; October 13, 1925. (It Was Not A Friday).

by Anura Guruge

Having, as a student, led a protest march against her I became one of the staunchest supporters as I aged — and started making some ‘serious money’! Yes, I was an out-and-our Conservative by the time I was in my mid-20s.

She was a GREAT Lady.

The 5th female Prime Minister.

I never realized that she was ‘that’ old, i.e., born 1925.

She will be remembered. She did some good things. Got me into the stock market — if nothing else. {Smile}

Giuseppe’s (In Meredith, NH) For Dinner — October 10, 2017.

It was Devanee’s 17th birthday and Giuseppe’s, which she has known for 15-years of her life, is her perennial favorite. So, yet again, that is where we went.

As always it was a delightful experience. Amazing, palpable congeniality. That Michael was playing was an unexpected bonus.

Had our usual: calamari x 2, spinach rolls x 2, large pizza for the girls, beef minestrone soup for I and then dessert for the girls. There were no complaints. It was good.

Thanks Julie.

The incomparable Julie, 2017 JTG.

Thor Heyerdahl, Mr. Kon-Tiki, Was Born This Day, 103-Years Ago; October 6, 1914.

My “Kon-Tiki” book from when I was about 8-years old! Click to ENLARGE.

I have known of Thor Heyerdahl for most of my life! My adoptive father was a huge fan of his and he introduced me to ‘Kon-Tiki’ when I was quite young, probably around 8.

As you can see I have a “Kon-Tiki” book, with my name written on it — in what I recognize as my very young signature, where I am trying to imitate that of my adoptive father. I, obviously, still have that book — and it is well traveled.

So, Thor, is no stranger to I.

He is probably not that well known in the U.S.A.

Nonetheless, an interesting man, though many of his theories have now been seriously questioned.

I just happened to stumble upon this serendipitously and I am GLAD.

Of course I knew him from “I Don’t Like Mondays” and “Do They Know It’s Christmas?

But, it was watching “When Harvey Met Bob“, (2010 movie), that gave me a whole new appreciation of him. Great man. Has done good.

Of late I have really got hooked on his “The Great Song Of Indifference” (above). I have been using it as background music while working on my latest book. That always means the song is special and I will always think of it when I think of the book.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi .

I love ‘Mohandas’. Gives me the chills when I hear it.

How the world could do with him TODAY. Ah, the Mahātmā (‘Great Soul‘ in Sanskrit).

He, alas, was before my time — he was tragically assassinated 5.8 years ahead of my birth.

BUT, he is in my TOP-TIER pantheon of personal heroes, alongside: Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King & Obama!

A time to PAUSE, especially today … after Las Vegas!

She was BIG in Ceylon in my youth — as she probably was around the world.

I thought some of you may want to wish her a ‘very happy birthday’.

I truly admire her passion and work as an animal rights activist. We need people like her giving voice to that good cause.

‘Poor’ DHL. ‘They’ made his life ‘unpleasant’ during his rather short life; he dying, from TB, aged just 44. As with so many others he is more revered and appreciated posthumously. That is a shame. So, on September 11, his birthday spare a thought for DHL and his indubitable brilliance.

Today, September 4, 2017, Is Google’s 18th Birthday — It Is Now ‘Of Age’.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google

Wow, Larry Page and Sergey Brin incorporated Google on September 4, 1998, while still postgraduate students at Stanford. One of their early, Angel investors was Jeff Bezos of Amazon! No wonder he is so rich. I don’t recall seeing any mention, of late, that Jeff Bezos is still an investor. He most likely is, in which case we have a Google — Amazon relationship that I have never heard talked about by financial gurus.

The domain name ‘google.com‘, with “google” per se a misspelling of “googol“, i.e., 10 to the power of 100, September 15, 1997 — just under a year ahead of the incorporation.

I guess Larry and Sergey had NOT Googled “September 4” to realize that it was “E-Day”, for Edsel, a day remembered for spectacular failures. I guess Google proved that wrong.

September 4, “E-Day” For “Edsel” — A Day To Commemorate Brilliant Failures!

THE Ford Edsel — For Ever Synonymous With Failure.

The Henry Ford Family Tree.

Edsel was the FAMOUS son, Henry Ford II’s father.

September 4th will always be “E-Day” — the day in 1957 that the Ford Motor company launched the ill-fated Edsel — the “E car“.

As such September 4 is a day to commemorate and celebrate FAILURE — brilliant failures at that.

Interestingly, “E-Day” is the ONLY event of any note that has EVER happened on September 4.

Some, ill-formed lists of ‘anniversaries’ will list September 4 as the birthday of Henry Ford. NOT SO. The Henry Ford, who created Ford, was born on June 30, 1863.

September 4 is the birthday of his grandson, Henry Ford II. BIG, difference.

He was the one that launched the Edsel. It was to coincide with HIS birthday!

The ‘Edsel’ was quite the ego trip for Henry Ford II. It was named after his DAD!

The name “Edsel” itself, IRONICALLY, is an old English word for ‘rich’. Well the Ford’s were indeed rich, though not thanks to the Edsel.
