So What Happens To Credibility Of The Bishops Consecrated By Now (Thankfully) DEFROCKED Theodore McCarrick?

Bishops, let alone Archbishops & ex-Cardinals, don’t get defrocked often. So, this issue that crossed my (ever fertile) mind doesn’t come up that often. What happens to the credibility of bishops who were LEGITIMIZED by Theodore McCarrick during his very long tenure as a bishop, archbishop and then cardinal.

‘Legitimized’ in this context referring to episcopal consecration — i.e., a bishop, per his standing as a bishop, elevating another to be a bishop.

This is the so called ‘Apostolic Succession‘. Each Catholic bishop is supposed to have a direct line to one or more of the original Apostles via this mechanism where a new bishop can only be established by an existing bishop … the theory being that the very first bishops were established by the original Apostles.

But, a bishop who gets defrocked could NEVER have been a worthy successor to the Apostles. He would have always been flawed. Otherwise he would not have got defrocked.

So, this would mean that McCarrick was a fraud when he was a bishop. Thus his consecrations have to be flawed if not bordering on fraud.

Think about it. I bet the bishops he consecrated are none too happy. You can bet on that.

Where Did The British Surname ‘Pope’ Come From — As In New Test Cricketer, Ollie Pope.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, of course, I have heard the NAME ‘Pope’ before BUT it was the new, 20-year old English cricketer, Ollie Pope, who made his Test debut against India yesterday that got me thinking.

Yes, there were popes that were married, and yes, there were popes that fathered children. But, I doubted whether any of those would have carried a surname ‘Pope’.

Plus, ‘Popes’ in very Anglican Britain.

So, I had to go looking. Appears it was a ‘not too nice’ nickname that stuck! Yikes. Indicated a pompous person that acted like a pope.

Yes, a possibility, that it might relate to those with a church, in particular bishopric, connection. But, the consensus is that it was most likely a nickname to start with. How a nickname eventually becomes a family name is a whole another conundrum.

Cardinal Loris Francesco Capovilla, Pope St. John XXIII’s Devoted Secretary, Dies At 100, On May 26, 2016.

In 2014 just ahead of his creation as a cardinal, aged 98.

He was an exceptional human being who was constantly at the side of another exceptional man, now a Saint, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (Pope John XXIII), for 10 years.

He, prior to his demise, was the oldest cardinal in the College of Cardinals, the oldest Italian bishop and the 4th oldest bishop worldwide.

He will be missed. He was a genuinely good person.

I got this begging e-mail this morning. I get such e-mails from Opus Bono Sacerdotii on a fairly regular basis. I used to get very fancy, expensive looking mailers — yes, of course, asking for money — in the mail, but they have stopped given I never responded to them. Have a read. Two of the Catholic priests in dire straights are supposedly such because of medical conditions — and nothing else (such as molesting kids). So the Catholic, the Catholic Church and the Pope just abandons them when they have back surgery or arthritis. I though Catholic priests in every sense were meant to be MARRIED to the Church. So what happened to ‘in sickness and in health’?

Is this REAL?

So what is YOUR take? I do NOT get it. I did NOT think the Catholic Church just abandoned priest.

OK. I do know that this group does help Catholic priests implicated in sex abuse and other sex crimes. Two things on that. Of late, on the issue of forgiving Catholic women who have abortions scores of Catholics have been shouting at me that forgiveness is at the CORE of their belief. So why doesn’t the Pope, the Catholics and the Church just forgive these ‘accused’ and take care of them? They were or still are Catholic priests? In this e-mail they are ALL Fathers, albeit with very generic names. So they must be priests. That is my second point. If they are being called ‘Father’ they should be a priest. If they are a bona fide priest it is incumbent on the Pope to take care of them. That is my take. IF they are not priest they should masquerade as priests.

The overriding impetus for Pope Francis’ September 22 — 27, 2015 visit to the U.S. is to participate in the 8th, triennial, “World Meetings of Families” being held in Philadelphia.

Archbishop ad personam, Bishop emeritus of Terni–Narni–Amelia (Italy), Vincenzo Paglia (70), as of June 2012 has been the President of the Pontifical Council for the Family. It is this Pontifical Council that is responsible, at the Vatican end, of organizing the World Meetings of Families — which by definition (as stated in its name) is a Global initiative. So for Paglia to be accused of and be officially investigated by Italian prosecutors for fraud and embezzlement is NOT good. Not sure whether he did it for his then diocese, the Church, personal gain or a combination of all.

It should not impact the event or the Pope’s visit. Just more embarrassment for the pope and Vatican. He definitely would have been in the pope’s retinue for the visit — possibly coming well ahead of the pope to make sure that all the details have been taken care of.

Interesting.

Just had an e-mail from Oswald Thomas Colman Gomis, Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus of Colombo (Sri Lanka) — a longtime family friend. Thought I would share given my Catholic and Sri Lankan readership. The news hasn’t hit all the relevant Catholic Websites as yet. [I sent Gabriel, at gcatholic.org, an e-mail.]

I did NOT know Bishop Elmo Perera. I see, thanks to Gabriel’s outstanding work, that we had 3 bishops all called Perera. Yes, a common name in Sri Lanka (a local variant of the Portuguese ‘Pereira‘ — for pear tree). I actually have cousins named ‘Perera’, and as is not unusual in Sri Lanka, they are Buddhists — i.e., names are not a reliable indicator of religion in Sri Lanka.

Theoretically, if not for the fact that I was adopted and do not know my biological family, Galle is my ‘home town’. I knew Galle well in my youth. Used walk on the ramparts. Now when I see them on TV, when cricket matches are being played in Galle, it makes me very nostalgic. Beautiful part of the world. After Galle there is nothing but Indian ocean all the way to Antarctica.

Not good. Could give the Church a bad name.

I checked to see how prevalent Hepatitis, a notifiable disease over there, actually is in Italy.

These two bishops supposedly caught it, in Rome, in September. They don’t, of course, have the numbers for that period — which was only last month.

But here are the numbers for Jan. – May 2013. 352 cases. So, I guess, and I could be wrong, you have to be damn unlikely to catch it — especially if you are a Catholic Bishop, a direct successor of the Apostles. What chances do mere mortals have if Bishops go around catching hepatitis in Rome.

Though my ongoing work on papal history is now widely followed and accepted, I, never having been a Christian (adopted by a prominent Sri Lankan Buddhist family and then giving up on anything spiritual altogether), am often all at sea when it comes to Christian theology — despite having a number of scholars, including Fr. Anthony Churchill of the U.K., a Licentiate of Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) from Rome no less, at hand to answer my questions and TRY to steer me in the right direction (which is never an easy task).

I saw this story on CNN yesterday. It has been widely reported all over the place since. That he supposedly caught it from contaminated food in good ol’ (and ol’ indeed) Italy has me raising my eyebrows. Of course, possible. You would normally associate hepatitis from food from a Third World country — but then again, I know that there will be folks in Europe who will gleefully claim that Italy is now a Third World country. Shame.

But, this is where I get so confused and befuddled. What did these poor folks in N.D. do to deserve this? They go to Mass and now they have all this anguish. I haven’t pinged any of my theology experts as yet BUT I have a fairly good idea of the two themes that I will get back from them: ‘no micro-management’ and ‘free will’. I can understand the ‘no micro-management’ part — just look at Obama and ObamaCare (and yes, I do appreciate that Obama thinks he is God too — which is a problem). But, the ‘free will’. Don’t get it. These are the dilemmas that occupy my mind most of the day — precluding me from getting anything productive done or earning any money.

Way To Go Pope Francis. Pope Finally Flexes His Muscles. Suspends German ‘Bishop of Bling’. Bravo. Bravo.

Funny thing that. This morning, while taking my shower, I was wondering whether Pope Francis will do anything about this idiotic German ‘Bishop of Bling‘.

As some of you know I have been worried that the pope had yet to find the tiller on the Barque of St. Peter and was fumbling around.

At last something truly decisive and replacing my hero Lord Tarcisio Bertone does not count since he was way, way, way over the retirement age and had to go by the end of this year.

This suspension, though short-term and temporary, is GREAT. Bravo. As we would normally say: “Atta boy Francis”. Way to go.

Now, make this permanent, fire a few more thousand rogue clerics (many openly gay) and you will have started to make a SMALL DENT in the problems you face.

Made my day.
