Why BOTH The Australian & New Zealand Cricket Teams Are Wearing Black Armbands At The Sydney Test — The Bushfires.

It was hard to miss with both sides wearing the black armbands.

Usually it is to mourn/mark the death of a famous national player or a family member of one of the players, e.g., to honor the death of 22-year old West Indian, Alzarri Joseph’s Mother in February 2019.

Well in this case it is different and I am NOT sure whether black is the right color.

Both teams, RIGHTLY, are honoring the fire and emergency crews that are fighting the horrendous bushfires burning all over Australia.

I am glad (and humbled) that the players are making this gesture. Bravo. Well done.

Just not sure that black is the right color.

Yes, there have been deaths and there will be more due these fires.

But, right now they are honoring those fighting the fires.

I would have preferred to see them wear another color, say red or orange.

West Indies & England Cricket Teams Wearing Black Armbands To Honor Alzarri Joseph’s Mother.

So for the second Test in a row the players are wearing black armbands. This time for poor, 22-year old Alzarri Joesph’s mother who died ahead of the 3rd day of the 2nd Test between the West Indies and England. I do not know the details. I assume she must have been ill. But, Alzarri did not, from what I saw, show any signs of distress the day before. He bowled quite. I like him. He has potential. This will be a setback. It is a great testament to his character that he continued to play. Him dropping out would have been a bitter blow to the West Indies. I am very proud of him ad this will be remembered for years to come. I wish him well.

Why The England Cricket Team Is Wearing Black Armbands During 1st Test Against Windies.

I, of course, watched the highlights. Good game, so far. Windies did better than I had expected, but, again not surprisingly, caved towards the end. But, a better score than many, including I, would have dared predict.

But, I wasn’t sure as to who the black armbands were for. Had to look it up.

Ruth Strauss. Interesting. I wasn’t that familiar with Andrew, never mind the wife. But, he was a former captain and many of the players must have known both of them. So, it was good that they decided to show their respects.

Could prove to be quite the game. Let’s hope that it lasts at least 4-days.

I, per my “eagle eyes” reputation, do not miss these things. But, did not know who had died because that was not included in the commentary snippets in the highlights package. I had assumed it must be an ex-player and wondered if it would be one that I knew.

So, I had to Google. A player’s father-in-law! Hhmmm. I guess it is up to them — and to be fair Tim Paine is playing, as the wicketkeeper no less.

Anywho. Now we know.
