mind blowing trampoline act (towards the middle).

I think you might have worked out from my title that I was impressed. Actually, I was beyond impressed. These 8 ‘kids’ (and they are YOUNG and there was only 8 that were on stage) redefined brilliance and I am not exaggerating or kidding. Wow. Wow. Wow.

Their talent, individually, collectively & synergistically is so awesome that it is humbling.

We go to a LOT of circuses — at least once a year, and we try to go to the BIG ones, whenever we can, like ‘Cirque du Soleil‘ and ‘Barnum & Bailey’. Just do a search on this blog. So, we have seen a lot of acts over the years. And these, by these 8, were UP there — way up there. And as you can see from the program (above) four of them have been with ‘du Soleil‘.

Their ‘vertical’ trampoline act is the BEST we have seen and we have seen it done by ‘du Soleil’, ‘Barnum & Bailey’ and others. The best, by far. They were brilliant.

The juggling. Out-of-this-world.

The magical piano player who did so much and was so integral to all the acts. Amazing. What it says in the program is TRUE. A generational talent! The whole piano ‘thing’ is very clever and cute. It is one of their props. It is no ordinary piano. It has a lot of electronics and an umbilical cord that is pretty hefty. I found this for you on YouTube. It gives you a glimpse of his talents but just a glimpse.

It is a proper circus. They do multiple, diverse acts and per circus lore even throw in a comedy, clown skit between the main acts. Very clever and very cute.

In addition to ‘brilliant’, ‘astounding’, ‘amazing’ a couple of other words that invariably come to mind are ‘cute’, ‘clever’, ‘ballet-like’.

There was only one disappointment — it was just 1-hour long! Halfway through I suspected that this would be the case. Nonetheless, it was kind of upsetting to be proved right. Given the amount of energy they expend they couldn’t, realistically, have stretched it out to 2-hours. But, they have to see how they can make that happen — with an intermission to break it up.

That said, HIGHLY, highly, highly recommended with no caveats. If you can catch them, do not forgo the opportunity. You will be amply rewarded.

‘Cirque FLIP Fabrique — Blizzard’: We Got Tickets To See Them At The ‘HOP’, Dartmouth.

by Anura Guruge

We like circuses. I don’t think you can go to enough. This year, as I far as I can recall, we have only been to one — and that was the delightful ‘Circus Smirkus‘, in Wolfeboro, in August.

Then today, we got a postcard from the HOP (at Dartmouth) advertising this circus. We haven’t been to the HOP in a longtime and there used to be a time when we used to go to 4 – 6 shows a year! So, this was an opportunity to rectify things.

Checked them out on the Web. Canadian and we know that Canada is now the home of world class circuses — starting with Cirque du Soleil. Six years ago we saw another AMAZING Canadian circus — i.e., CIRQUE ALFONSE ‘Timber’ — at the HOP. That was good. So, we are hoping that this might follow in the footsteps.

Last year, at Christmas, we went to ‘Cirque Dreams Holidaze’. That was OK but wasn’t worth writing home about. They are actually back in Manchester again this year but we decided to give them a miss. Then this came up.

We like Dartmouth, we like the HOP. So, this should be fun.

Of course I will keep you posted. SMILE.

I am glad that Google did a Doodle to commemorate this special day.

I see that we had a blizzard on Pi Day 2017. We have the continuation of Winter Storm “Skylar” this year.

Who would have thought. So much snow on Pi Day — like frosting for the Pi.

Enjoy.

Boston Chinatown “Chinese New Year 2018” Dragon Parades Are Sunday, Feb. 25 — BUT, Heavy Rain.

by Anura Guruge

In past years we have had BLIZZARDS — e.g., 2013 for the Chinatown New Year.

This year, for Boston, it is heavy rain, 5″ – 8″ snow for us.

The Dragon Parades won’t be fun in the rain.

Yes, you could watch them from a restaurant, but that is NOT much fun.

Plus, Chinatown isn’t exactly car friendly and parking, even outside of New Year, is hard. So, you really need to walk.

So, a heads up. If you plan to go on Sunday you will get soaked.

They are serving Dim Sum, at China Pearl, on Saturday. I called and checked.

I can’t, however, get any sense as to whether there will be any Dragon Parades on Saturday. I SUSPECT that there might be — because of the Sunday rain. But, I could be wrong.

We Dodged Another Recession. 4Q 2012 GDP Was Positive. Barely. The Bare Minimum. But, Positive. So No Blizzard Related Recession.

Blizzards Biggest Fallout: A Possible Recession! — Feb. 10, 2013.

See that little blip at the very right. ‘0.1’. That was 4Q 2012 GDP. Never mind that it was 0.1, the smallest number that they can report. It was positive. We are in the clear for another quarter. Click to ENLARGE.

I had been meaning to write about this for 11 days since the REVISED 4Q GDP for the U.S. was released on February 28, 2013 — the day that the old pope, Benedict XVI (#266) officially resigned and left the Vatican. Suffice to say I have been crazy busy with pope stuff and continue to be.

I was waiting for the number. I was lying in bed, drinking my coffee, with CNBC on. When the number came in I gagged, more out of amusement than anything else.

I am so glad that after 4 years in power the Obama White House has finally come to realize that these are THEIR NUMBERS and a little bit of steaming, if not outright cooking, is OK — even expected. What is the point of being in power if you don’t abuse it — a bit.

The initial, first-cut reading of 4Q GDP, given Hurricane Sandy, at been negative. That was not good. Two quarters of back-to-back negative GDPs and we are automatically in a recession.

I was worried that the Blizzard Nemo might do to 1Q 2013 what Sandy had done to 4Q. That would have meant a recession. Not good for any of us, politically or financially.

But, common sense obviously prevailed in D.C., particularly at the W.H. Revise the 4Q GDP to 0.1%.

Everybody is now happy. It is positive. Even if 1Q 2013 comes in negative we are in the clear — since 2Q looks ‘OK’, sequestration or no sequestration.

Stock market is doing good, though my son, the new stock market wizard (with impressive results), got me to short the market on Friday. I indulged him, as I am wont to do. What is the point of having kids if you don’t indulge them. Of course there has to be a correction soon. So he will be proved right. Question is how much money we would have made by shorting. I, being poor, didn’t ‘bet’ that much. Don’t have the money. He was betting 2.5 times more than me. I am happy. I am the one who told him, about a year ago, that he, given the way his brain works, will be good at stocks. After a shaky start he is looking impressive. I could see a Guruge Hedge Fund in the future. That would be a riot. The ONLY other Sri Lankan I know who had a hedge fund is now in jail! But, Matthew has a different pedigree.

Happy New Year.

It is snowing quite heavily in Boston and eastern Massachusetts — per my earlier heads up yesterday morning. Roads are supposed to be slippery. So watch out — especially for the maniacs driving German SUVs & cars and think that they can defy the laws of physics.

We, alas, will not be going. I am beyond bummed. The snow alone would not have deterred me, I have been in and out of Boston in much, much worse. Teischan, gratis of Dartmouth Hitchcock (Concord), has walking pneumonia! If all of their doctors were half-way competent she would have been cured by now — since we also took her in, on an emergency basis, last Tuesday. So, I am not a happy camper.

The snow is expected to moderate around 1pm. They will most likely still have the dragon/lion parades and crackers. This but comes once a year. If you can get to China Town on the ‘tube’ (which we have done numerous times having parked at the Museum of Science, where we were Members) I would still go. It won’t be fun. The tall building will shield you some, but will also act as wind tunnels.

If you went, and have pictures, PLEASE share.

Happy New Year. A pox on some of doctors at DHMC Concord. May the Chines New Year snake bite them, painfully, on their arses.

Happy New Year.

Deanna was checking the Boston weather and amazed me by saying that it is expected to snow Saturday and Sunday in Boston. Wow. A week after the Blizzard. I am still keen to go and a New Year comes only but once a year — though I celebrate three and plan to make that four this year by cracking the Jewish protocols. 1″ snow isn’t a big deal. I have drive in and out of Boston in much, much worse. But, as Deanna points out it is what happens when we get to China Town. We will play it by ear. Just wanted to give you a head’s up.
