Alton Center Superintendent William ‘Bill’ Lander is NOT telling us anything we didn’t already know. I had told you that this was a meaningless vote as soon as it was taken (though I readily confess that I am the one that set them up for taking the vote).

However, I do NOT think that Lander should have made the statement he did WITHOUT first having told that to the Board.

Two of us at the last Board meeting requested that Lander informs all of us as to the implications and ramifications of the vote.

There has been NO PUBLIC board meeting since the vote.

So Lander did not make this ‘of no consequence‘ statement to the Board. Instead he scurries off and tells it to a journalist.

That he has NO RESPECT for this Board has been abundantly clear for months — and I have written about it. To be fair, Lander has them by their short and curlies. The Board reports to him, not the other way around. He has nothing to lose and everything and MORE to gain. He got the board, in March 2013, to give him an iron-clad, platinum parachute THREE YEAR (3) contract. So now he can disrespect the Board as much as he wants and I don’t blame him. This Board has done nothing to earn his respect. They have too many secrets between them and Lander knows all the secrets.

That said, I am UPSET that he so blatantly disrespects the
Board Chair, Sandy Wyatt.

This is the second time in 2 months that he really has put the kindly, gentle lady in an awkward situation. I am getting a terrible feeling that he enjoys putting Mrs. Wyatt on the spot. Wonder if he would treat a male Chair the way he treats ‘poor’ Mrs. Wyatt?

Lander got Mrs. Wyatt to read a glowing account of his friend that he was hiring to be the $3,000 facilitator without telling Mrs. Wyatt all the facts. Mrs. Wyatt ended up with egg on face though they ended up trying to sort it out in non-public session.

Now this.

Lander should have first run this past the Board at the next meeting.

That he didn’t was disrespectful to the Chair, Mrs. Wyatt.

Mrs. Wyatt deserves better. I don’t really know her. I have only seen her at Board meetings. BUT, she over the last few months has earned our unstinted respect (and at least when it comes to me, that isn’t easy). She really is trying to do what is good for Alton. She is fair, somewhat patient and follows the rules.

But there is NOTHING, NADA, that the Board can do. They are his pawns.

With possibly one small exception, and ‘small‘ here is THE keyword, I really haven’t had any issues with the teaching staff at Alton Central. In general I find them to be a great bunch and we have been lucky to have had some very exceptional teachers for both Devanee and Teischan.

Yesterday’s ‘Back to School Night’ just confirmed my long held (since 2007 when Devanee started attending ACS) beliefs that we have some wonderful teachers at ACS. I feel bad about the ‘politics’, much of it having to do with The Board, that must drive them to distraction. Yes, it would be nice if they had a better, newer school BUT I was kind of surprised to see how well the Middle School was equipped and how BIG Teischan’s 2nd Grade classroom was. I went to school in a 3rd world, dirt poor country. There were 60 kids per class and our classrooms were 1/4 of the size of Teischan’s room for 19 or 20 kids. We managed and I did get one heck of an education!

Teischan has a teacher that was Devanee’s teacher 6 years ago. So we know her, we like her and she knows us. So that was good. We are happy.

Devanee is back at ACS after a 18 month hiatus after we took her out in February 2012 because of bullying. I am still not 100% happy that she is back at ACS. I worry. But trying to homeschool her was very stressful for Deanna though Devanee did do quite well with homeschooling.

All of the Middle School and the teachers there were new to me. I really had had no exposure to them. We spoke to 4 of them and I was very favorably impressed and grateful. Some very committed, dedicated and talented folks here. That is good. I heard Mr. LaFreniere tell another parent, while we were in line, that he would come in on a Saturday morning if a kid needed additional help. My ears pricked up. That is dedication beyond the call of duty. Then this morning Deanna woke me up, just after a 8 (and as such 20 – 30 minutes ahead of my normal wakey-wakey time) saying ‘Have you seen this … Mr. LaFreniere has given out his cell phone number?’. Neat. This is all good. I am glad. Mr. Brown the Social Studies teacher actually knew some place names from Sri Lanka. I was delighted. [Not many folks in NH know where Sri Lanka is, let alone know of any place names.] This is all good.

Deanna and I, individually and together, spoke with Mikel LaChapell, the Assistant Principal. This is the first time I have really had a chat with him. We had a good discussion about bullying and school safety. he now knows where we are coming from. If Devanee experiences any bullying this time around we will not pussyfoot around. I think everybody kind of knows that.

So, that is where we are at. We were impressed. We were happy. Lets hope we can have an uneventful year at school — though I already know, because of a phone call we got from a prominent Alton businessman this morning, that the fireworks at the Board Meeting will continue. What fun. But, thankfully, none of the issues should impinge on the teachers — other than the ‘Common Core’ tussle, but the school is at ‘Rotate’ for the 2013-2014 school year. So that cannot be changed. [‘Rotate’ is the aeronautical term used by pilots during takeoff. At ‘rotate’ you are committed to the takeoff. You can’t change your mind. You have to get the wheels off the ground even if you are going to be crashing!]

Alton Central School (ACS) Superintendent, Bill Lander, Cancels Board Meeting Set For Today, Monday, August 26, 2013. How Convenient?

Sheer genius. You have to hand it to them. So clever.

At least for that Alton taxpayers should be grateful. How many of YOU taxpayers actually realize that Mr. William ‘Bill’ Lander, Superintendent, despite the generous full-pay he receives only works part-time — with the blessing of the Board? Many of you probably can’t even remember. But the deal was that the new Superintendent, as opposed to the last ‘Pluto is a Planet’ advocate, was going to be full-time. We certainly pay him what appears to be a full-time salary. But, I found out, from the horse’s mouth itself, that he negotiated part-time hours! Has to be nice.

So, he cancels the Board Meeting, and avoids any discussion on the hiring of the $3,000 strategic plan facilitator, and says it is because it clashes with ‘Back to School Night’.

So did THEY forget it was Back to School Night?

How convenient … and other words beginning in ‘c’.

As some of you may have realized I like words. I like to play with words. After this strategic planner embroglio I have a new mind game to keep me amused in moments of idleness. You TOO can play it with me. How many words starting with ‘D’ can you come up with to describe this the latest School Board fiasco — with the exemplary Steve Miller, as ever, the exception.

The Town, the Selectmen, should give Steve Miller an award: The True Champion Of Alton Youth.

Well, looks like we the Alton taxpayers got shafted again.

Given that we don’t miss many ACS School Board meetings, and I do pay some attention to what is being said, I do not think this is correct.

But, it was on the ACS Website all through this crucial weekend — as parents get ready for the first day of school on Tuesday, August 27.

It would be really, really good IF there is indeed a Board Meeting on Monday.

IF this is a mistake it will be quite embarrassing for the administration. Deanna has already fired off e-mails to the school and I have given a heads-up to a ‘friend’.

As the always redoubtable Board Member Steve Miller has stated, he wants a revote on the facilitator for the crucial ACS Strategic Plan.

I get a feeling that the ACS Superintendent, Bill Lander, for obvious reasons, is doing his best to either not have a revote or have it done in ‘private’ or even by phone. If he does we will still bring it up a the next school board.

These shenanigans involving Alton taxpayer money has to stop.

We are not being told anything about the 3rd party, independent bullying investigation that took place over the Summer. I am fairly certain that the Board paid for that investigation. At a minimum I want to know how much was paid. IF you were an Alton taxpayer wouldn’t you like to know.

One of the big problems is that this is a Board with secrets who love to do things in secret. That hardly anybody turns up to their ever so non-transparent meetings just emboldens a few of them. I wish more folks would attend, or at least watch the tapes.

The prior ‘hire the $3,000 Facilitator’ post

from Board Member Steve Miller.

This is classic. Watch this. Listen to the Chair, Sandy Wyatt, read this glowing resume. She reads about her tenure at Raymond. What is missing? Just the dates. Nothing more, nothing less.

This resume was provided to her by the Superintendent, Mr. Bill Lander, who admits, and it is on this very tape, that he knows this person. Talk about keeping the public in the dark.

Watch and be amazed. This is your elected officials at work.

That said, I feel bad for Sandy Wyatt. I don’t know her and I am not sure, and I could be wrong, but I think she is not Machiavellian. In this instance she was set up by Mr. Lander. For that I feel bad. But, she, as the Chair, must have some powers to question and censure.

Breaking News

….
This is indeed interesting news. I was under the impression that
Superintendent, Mr. Bill Lander,
had briefed the Board, in non-public session, as to this matter.

Why would he have not done so?

Did he not think it was germane?

Key Points:

§ Superintendent, Mr. Bill Lander, who proposed Jean Richards, with unstinted praise, never mentioned this suspension in public session.

§ Board Members present at the August 8 meeting where this was approved: Sandy Wyatt, Terri Noyes, Steve Miller & Carlos Martinez.

§ Suspension from Raymond took place in September 2012 — less than a year ago.

§ It is not clear from the 2nd (Raymond) report, but there still appears to be residual cases in court.

§ She is now Superintendent of a school district, Monroe, with 72 students? Link.

§ Why weren’t any other Superintendents considered, or was this (another) insider-job given that Mr. Lander has indicated that he ‘knows’ her?

§ Given that bullying in various forms is a major issue at ACS it seems ironic that the Board would decide to hire a facilitator who was at ‘troubled’ Raymond.

§ To me this is another example of this board being insensitive to the parents & kids at ACS and thumbing their nose, yet again, at the bullying issues!

§ I hear, and I do not as yet, have the details, that Alton’s Prospect Mountain High School is facing a bullying lawsuit. So, the Board hires this facilitator for their strategic plan? What are they drinking?

I wanted folks to have access to THIS presentation ASAP.

That is why I have been agitating so and Deanna firing off e-mails to the SAU (on my behalf).

N.B. There are NO dangerous levels of asbestos or any other toxic matter.

Tomorrow I will go cross check this against the presentation given at the March Deliberative Session.

That should be fun. Was somebody taking poetic license with the facts?

At the June 20, 2013 ACS School Board meeting we got to hear the detailed, blow-by-blow results of the in-depth, $5,600 (?) air quality inspection that was done on the school.

Bottom line was that there isn’t anything too unduly wrong. Some minor concerns with some ‘above “spec” carbon dioxide (not monoxide) and radon readings but nothing that could be construed as even marginally dangerous or untoward. Good news.

The inspection found that some maintenance issues left much to be desired — such as missing gutter downspouts and poorly maintained vents. The PowerPoint presentation had some great pictures.

As you can see on this video, I did get up and explicitly ask, and you can check the wording, that the ‘PowerPoint Presentation‘ be put online by the next day, i.e., Friday, June 21, 2013.

You will also see that I asked for a COMMITMENT on getting this done from the Superintendent, Mr. Lander, and that he gave me that commitment. Check the tape.

Well as far as I can see they put up this video but not the PowerPoint presentation. Concerned Alton residents need to see the Presentation. You can’t really see it on the video.

Mr. Lander!

>> The Presentation, as a PDF, is now available online. <<

It also appears that the school already had a 3-year asbestos containment program — though this was never really disclosed prior to the ever so contentious $18 million school renovation bond.

Barbara Howard, who can always be relied upon to keep the School Board and Administration ‘honest’, got up and took them all to task on this. You can see it all, on the video, at around the 1:23:24 mark. She again questioned the credibility of the Board and Administration. This has now become a perennial issue. ‘Credibility’ is my guiding creed. Well … watch the tape.

That they reneged on their commitment, which can clearly be seen and heard on the tape, just compounds their credibility woes.

Deanna got this via Facebook yesterday
when she reposted my ACS bullying update post.

I have, of course, removed all names from this correspondence.

I wish the school would do something about the bullying! It’s terrible! Not only was xxxxx bullied by a boy with him threatening to smear PB in her face even though he knew she was allergic to it, he then decided on retribution when he was talked to, which entailed him going around the school telling kids terrible things about xxxxx. I called the AP and left a message … which after three days he never returned! Now, here it is … school is out and he got away with it! UGH! Frustrating to say the least!

Key:
PB = peanut butter
AP = Assistant Principal, Mikel LaChapell

I just find this amazing at multiple level.

There seems to be an arrogant air of indifference when it comes to bullying. I don’t know the AP. I miss Steve Ross. Though we once had major ‘differences’ you could always rely on Steve.

I wish the parents were more vocal on this issue. This has got to stop. This bullying is really harming our kids.

Well more grist to the mill.
