I had the honor of meeting Donald Hall once. It was probably 19-years ago and I think it was in Tilton (or thereabouts) in a church hall. He was doing a book signing for the ‘Ox-Cart Man‘. My son Matthew, very young at the time, loved that book. I went, with some friends from Meredith, to get an autographed copy. I suspect that that book is in this house somewhere. I hope the kids did not give it away.
Great man. I could take or leave his poetry, but I am not big into poetry. But, that is my loss.
If you are not familiar with the ‘Ox-Cart Man’ you really should check it out. It is lavishly illustrated too.
My father, when he was the Sri Lankan ambassador to the U.S. and residing in D.C. would have breakfast with Al Gore on a regular basis. His residence was the closest to Al’s residence at the Naval Observatory. So this explains a quirk that will puzzle historians in years to come. The first signatory to Al Gore’s ‘Information SuperHighway‘ plan, in 1993, was Sri Lanka. Al wanted to get the ball rolling and my father was happy to signup. I used to joke that Sri Lanka at the time probably had a 128Kps dial-up link to the Internet.
