So yes there will be two circuses at the ‘Verizon Arena‘, Manchester, New Hampshire, this Summer.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey” (which in the past has been in October) — and their last show in NH with elephants — with ‘Circus Xtreme‘ will be here May 5 – 8, 2016.

“Cirque du Soleil” with ‘OVO’ will be here August 25 – 28, 2016.

Well we have not missed a “Ringling Brothers” circus at the Verizon in 8 years and as of 2012 have been trying to see as many “Cirque du Soleil” performances as we can. Saw “Dralion” in 2012 at the Verizon and “Varekai” in 2014 also at the Verizon. Also saw “Mystere” in 2012 but that was in Las Vegas. So this will be our 4th Cirque and the 3rd in Manchester.

At the “Verizon Wireless Arena”
Thursday, May 5th to Sunday, May 8th.

I got an e-mail from Verizon (since I am a good customer), on Friday, with this ultra-special Pi Day offer.

Everything 3.14; $3.14 for the Thursday 7pm show, 1st 314 punters buying tickets at the Verizon Box Office starting at 12pm on Monday, March 14, 2016 — Pi Day (of the century).

I deleted the e-mail because I assumed I would find the offer on their Website. WRONG.

You could/should call, (603) 644-5000, IF you are interested in pursuing this quite incredible offer. Thursday night’s don’t work for us. But we always get the CHEAP tickets anyway. SMILE.

Cheapest Tickets For Broadway (NY) ‘Phantom of the Opera’.

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Attribution WILL be enforced.

The CHEAPEST way to get tickets to see the ‘Phantom of the Opera‘ in New York City is to buy the tickets directly from the Box Office of the ‘Majestic Theater‘ (the home of the ‘Phantom’ since its opening on Broadway in 1988) — unless, of course, you want to deal with the uncertainty, frustration and longlines at TKTS.

During our trip to New York City and Philadelphia ‘after Christmas‘ the kids — now 9 & 15 — were adamant that they had to see the ‘Phantom’. They had wanted to see it ‘forever’ but Teischan, until now, was too young. Plus they had already seen the movie a couple of times and knew the story — and as such it would not be as scary for Teischan.

Deanna and I had seen it in 2004 — when we saw 3 shows (‘Phantom’, ‘Fiddler’ and ‘Bollywood’) in 3 nights. I had seen it at least three times prior to that. I had always got my tickets by going directly to the Majestic Box Office — on 245 West 44th Street (couple of blocks south of Times Square and close to the ‘Port Authority Bus Station‘). But this time, knowing that it was the holidays, I started looking on the Web. Yes, there are plenty of ‘folks’ offering tickets BUT I was shocked at how expensive they were — especially as we needed 4 tickets.

In the end I decided that I will take a chance and wait until we got to New York. And that is what we did. No sooner had we checked into the Novotel, on Times Square, we set off, across Times Square, to the Majestic. We wanted tickets for matinee (2pm) for the next day (Tuesday). I know better than to take kids to 8pm shows that last ‘3 hours’ — even if it is the ‘Phantom’. Yes, they had tickets, at face value. They weren’t great tickets, ‘Rear Mezzanine’, and they were 2 + 2 — not together — BUT at $75 each the price was right. For the ‘Phantom’ the ‘Rear Mezzanine’ is NOT a bad place for your FIRST viewing of ‘Phantom’. So much takes place that it is good to be able to see the whole stage from above. Note, I did say FIRST ‘Phantom’. The kids, ideally and with luck, will see it a few more times like we have.

The first time I saw it, I was doing a seminar for ‘Business Communications Review‘ in Times Square. I was walking by the Majestic after the seminar when I went in on a whim. They sold me a seat in one of the boxes. That was NEAT. Box seats are $75 but are in high demand. I have a plan that the next time we are in NY that I buy box seats, for the future, and then go back just for the show. Anywho … I hope this helps. You can’t order tickets DIRECTLY from the Box Office by phone or online.

Oh! The cheapest seats I found online, also for the Rear Mezzanine, were $129 — this being the crush ahead of New Year’s. We paid $75. So that was a $54 difference. Times 4 = $216. That was worth saving, though we might have been able to sit a few rows ahead if I had bought online.

Ringling Brothers Circus In Manchester, NH, May 5 – 8, 2016 — Last Show With Elephants?

At the “Verizon Wireless Arena”
Thursday, May 5th to Sunday, May 8th.

I was puzzled when I got an e-mail from Verizon (with whom I am registered) that ‘THE CIRCUS‘ was coming to Town, viz. Manchester, New Hampshire (our ‘Queen City’), in May.

For the last 7 years or more the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus had come to Manchester in October. We should know since we have never missed a show during those years.

Yes, last October, with very poor attendance, I did hear staff talking that they might move the show away from October to avoid conflicts with the various Fall Fairs, e.g., Deerfield & Sandwich. So that could have been it.

The timing, early May, intrigued me. They have now stated that they will retire ALL elephant acts ‘IN May’. ‘In’ could mean sometime during that entire month. It is interesting that their promos for the show does feature elephants. So this could be HISTORIC for us. Last Ringling Brothers in Manchester with elephants.

As I have always advised: BEST way to get tickets for the circus (or for that matter any show at the Verizon) is to SOMEHOW, by hook or by crook, go directly to the Box Office at the arena. Buying tickets through ‘TicketMaster‘ is a SCAM.

RevelsNorth2013tickets

Our seats.

As I said in my last post not only had I set two electronic e-mail alerts for yesterday to remind me — we set two wake up alarms, one mechanical the other electronic (because I am a great believer in belt-and-braces), to rouse me from my deep slumber at 7:30 am. That I was willing to get up at 7:30 am to buy tickets really is the utmost endorsement I can give to Revels North.

I am not a morning person — especially because I don’t go to bed until early morning! Last night I didn’t make it to bed till 1:30 am and then I read for 20 minutes. No I am not an insomniac. I actually sleep very well, without issue — always have and I can sleep anywhere when I have to. Unless we are travelling or have an appointment, it has to be a VERY SPECIAL occasion for me to agree to getting up before 8 am. And today was one of those days.

Yes, I got up at 7:30 last year also, on the very first day the tickets went online, to get our front row seats.

The kids have high expectations of me when it comes to tickets. They think I am good at it — probably the only thing that they think I am good at. So I try not to disappoint. They have very specific requirements. Front row aisle. So I got them front row aisle for the 3rd year in a trot. It was a bit nerve wracking this morning.

Though I woke up at 7:30 and Deanna, kindly, supplied me with my first cup of coffee shortly thereafter, there was no way I intended to get out of bed!  There are limits. So I had taken the precaution of putting Teischan’s Windows 8 laptop under the bed. I am not very good with laptops. I don’t like the keyboards and the screen, even at 15+”, is way too small for me. I am into BIG picture since this PC has 47″ horizontal screen space. So I messed up a few times. I was getting worried that I might lose the seats. But, I prevailed. We, actually Teischan, has an account, so the purchase part was easy. [We use to go to Big Apple circus at Hanover — until they stopped coming. I set up the Hop box office account to buy those tickets in 2006 — the year that Teischan was born; having seen the flyer for the circus at ‘The Hospital’ during her birth. Hence, why the account is in her name — which she is very proud of, because the tickets bear her name and all the Hop literature we get is addressed to her.]

So we are excited. I am happy though this has been an EXPENSIVE week in terms of tickets. Monday tickets for the circus. Today Revels and then 30 minutes later Deanna bought tickets for ‘Story Land’ — another near ‘annual’ ritual.

There really isn’t enough brilliant things I can say about Christmas Revels at Dartmouth — courtesy of the ultra-talented and awfully dedicated Revels North.

Last year’s show was stupendous. The 2011 Olde English extravaganza was mesmerizing. We as a family just love Christmas Revels at Dartmouth. The kids look forward to it and talk about it year round. They know they are in for a treat. Such a rich, multimodal experience for all, but even more so for kids.

So, it made my day when I got the flyer this afternoon. I can’t wait. I already set an alarm for August 14. Usually I am still asleep at 8 am. But, I will get up early so that I can get my tickets the minute they go on sale. That I am willing to get up by 8 am to buy tickets tells it all to those that know me. Since I don’t go to sleep till around 2 am, I like my sleep and something has to be very, very special and important to mess up my sleep schedule.

This looks like another gem, bound to toast the cockles of your heart and get you all set for Christmas.

The Winter Solstice, heralding the coming of Summer, is my favorite day of the year. The Summer Solstice, signaling that days will start getting shorter, each day, until that special Day in December, is my least favorite day of the year. I know my physics and astronomy. So I truly am a Christmas reveler in every sense of the word — and Dartmouth Revels really hits the spot.
