‘Tetley Tea’, 183-Years In Business, Finally, In 2020, Figured Out How To Brew Loose Leaf Tea.

Old vs New

This is quite funny. Just 2-weeks ago I did this post showing that the ‘Tetley Tea’ 2lbs Loose Tea box had instructions for brewing tea using a TEA BAG rather than the loose leaf black tea contained in the box.

Well, wrong instructions or not, there was nothing wrong with the tea. Actually quite decent tea, especially for the price. I liked the tea. So, I ordered another box. As you can see they changed the packaging and now they got the instructions right. I am happy.

I am, as of last week, brewing my loose tea using this MAGICAL ‘Hiware’ $22 teapot. As you can see from my Amazon review I think it is pretty close to perfect.

I can’t say I am surprised. This is an outlandish extravaganza — though there are a lot of folks out there who could easily afford it. But, to be honest I don’t see why it would be compelling and that comes from a man who traded in his MARQ Expedition for a second Garmin Fenix 6, albeit the second in Titanium.

Would love to know how many Garmin has really sold. Garmin made it very clear that they were targeting it for Christmas. Well, Christmas has come and gone.

Well, I guess they still have two other opportunities: Chinese New Year and, of course, Valentine’s. Hence, I will keep on checking over the next couple of weeks and keep you posted. Would be a hoot if they do sell all 100 by Valentine’s.

Keep fingers crossed. SMILE.

I am sure I am on solid ground here. I can’t be 100% sure BUT I don’t think a wife, irrespective of her wealth or access to funds, will buy you this. She will just know, innately, that it is dumb.

Plus, do NOT excuse me of semism — i.e., a father of three daughters (one of who is a big Garmin fan). The MARQ is not for ladies. It is big and heavy. There is NO MARQ S. It is unashamedly a man’s watch.

So, what do you think.

I did the sums. You are paying $450 for the wooden box and the limited-edition exclusivity.

The five MARQ watches — and I priced them out for you — are: Driver ($2,500), Aviator ($1,950), Captain ($1,850), Adventurer (which used to be the Expedition) ($1,750) & Athlete ($1,500). So, the five watches come to $9,550.

What is NOT included is the Commander ($1,950).

What do YOU think.

I had to smile. Yes, $10,000 is NOT much for 5 watches. Plenty of folks that can afford this without thinking twice. In a world where a person will pay $125,000 for a banana duct taped to a wall, this is quite a BUY!

Click to access article. Google for more.

I have three Garmins right now: two Fenix 6s and a Venu. So, I am NOT in a position to disparage 5 Garmins — though five maybe is overkill.

Why do I have three. Well, I needed TWO — one as a hot backup if one failed. Didn’t want to go even a day without recording my data. The Venu was a bonus — because I like AMOLED screens.

But, 5 MARQs. That would get old pretty quickly I would think.

I am a long-term Garmin shareholder. So, I do care how Garmin spends MY money! Not too thrilled about this. But, Garmin is a Billion dollar company and this is but bagatale.

A friend of mine, another HUGE Garmin fan, asked whether Garmin will really sell any of these Sets. I think they will. In the scheme of things, on a global basis, 100 sets isn’t much. I wouldn’t be surprised if they sell them all.

SMILE.

Enjoy.

Merry Christmas.

Hope your girlfriend buys you one. Please send pictures. All the best.

Kudos To ‘Atoll’ For The Very Fine (Double-Boxed) Packaging Of Their Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Boards.

by Anura Guruge

I was very happy with how my 11′ Atoll Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board arrived in the mail today.

For a start it was DOUBLE-BOXED. Kudos. The outside box had a ding on it and I had vision of a punctured board. Nothing to worry about. The second box (the white one) was untouched. So, everything inside was pristine. I am so glad.

Very well packed. Everything in its place and easy to take out.

Everything as promised.

I was glad. Nothing worse that having to try and get missing parts.

So far, Atoll really has surpassed expectations. I hope to keep it that way.

Wish me luck.

Garmin MARQ Expedition Anura Guruge May 2019

My Garmin MARQ Expedition on my wrist for the first time.

Saying Goodbye to my trusty Fenix 5 Plus. I will miss it!

The Twelve (12) Trackers I Have Had In The Last 2-Years

The Packing & Box

Yes, I know I am VERY fortunate (but I did a fair amount of writing to earn this). Basically, I did NOT have to pay for it. I traded in my 7-month old (and in IMMACULATE condition) Fenix 5 Plus and called upon ‘virtual $$$s‘ I had banked away for technical & writing services rendered over a 6-month period. Though I now rarely charge folks for my writing, I still get rewarded for it. This is the most visible example.

Impressive watch — but I am not sure whether I would have paid $1,750 for it! Given that I didn’t have to part with any money, at all, at all, it feels GREAT.

The Titanium body looks good and the Italian leather strap does look pretty good.

Now this is nowhere CLOSE to the most expensive watch I have owned. I wore a Rolex, with diamonds on its face, for 26-years. This watch is 1/4 the price of the Rolex.

Garmin has tried to make it upmarket. The box it comes in is HUGE and weights a ‘ton’. The dark gray plastic box (which feels metalish) is about the same size — and looks just like — a 6V lawn mower battery. Garmin is trying to compete with the packaging of high end watches and I am not sure whether they truly succeeded. 15-years ago, I sold my EMPTY Rolex box, since I had no use for it, on eBay for $98! Doubt whether I could get $22 for the empty MARQ box.

Though the straps are 22mm Quick-Fit the black plastic strap they include in the box has ‘larger’ (nicer) wrap-around ends over the Quick-Fit mechanism.

All the screens have been jazzed up and are much more appealing though it is still the same old TIRED display from the original Fenix 5. That is definitely a negative.

It has this ‘Body Battery’ feature, oxygen saturation and fall-detection. I haven’t worn it for long enough to determine if the ‘Body Battery’ or oxygen saturation is for I. For an old guy my oxygen saturation, at 96%+, is adequate.

So, this is my first cut review/impression.

I am GLAD I got it, the WAY I did.

I will keep you posted.

REUSING Amazon Packaging Rather Than Recycling The Boxes — A PROPOSAL.

by Anura Guruge

Recycling boxes, i.e., cardboard, though better than just throwing it away, is extremely inefficient and costly in terms of energy.

The boxes are RE-PULPED then reconstituted again as paper or cardboard. That is wasteful.

It would so much better just to reuse the boxes as many of us do …

We also reuse boxes when we do returns.

So, why can’t we have a scheme where we can RETURN Amazon boxes to a Post Office.

USPS can send them back to an Amazon Fulfillment Center. In many cases they will be sending trucks to Amazon EMPTY — to pick up new loads of deliveries. So, this will make those trips more productive.

I cannot see why Amazon and USPS could NOT be able to get this to work. Yes, there will be some initial costs but Amazon will quickly be in the BLACK. Boxes are expensive, even for Amazon.

It is possible that there might be some Amazon customers who are squeamish about having things delivered in USED boxes, though to be fair you never know where a box has been. I have got plenty of Amazon boxes with cuts, tears and stains.

Yes, maybe Amazon could irradiate the returned boxes to appease all.

And, then there is another option. It can be part of your SHIPPING PREFERENCES. Amazon could give you a small DISCOUNT for checking an option saying “Will Accept Reused Boxes”.

I am sure consumer will buy into this. We take the cardboard to be recycled. So, taking it to a post office will not be that different.

I really would like Amazon to think about this.

What do YOU think?

Amazon Packaging Is Socially Irresponsible!

by Anura Guruge

A set of 4 TINY watch straps pins
that I received today!

EXACTLY as it arrived.

Nothing removed, nothing rearranged. Untouched.

There was NO packing. Nothing to break.

This was it.

The little packed had slipped under the bottom flaps!

The ITEM!

This is irresponsible.

I just could NOT believe it. I knew what was inside. I was expecting it.

This is BEYOND crazy.

A tiny package of unbreakable stuff. It should have gone in a padded envelope.

This makes me very upset and annoyed — especially as an Amazon shareholder.

UPDATE

I tweeted this post and copied Amazon. They responded.
They have a PACKAGING FEEDBACK process — here is the link.
I used it. Pretty neat.

Send them the pictures and feedback. Now YOU know.

Amazon Still Profligate In Its Packaging.

This is CRAZY.

This is irresponsible.

It was not fragile. There was nothing to break. These could have been easily shipped in a padded envelope.

Waste of resources. Yes, the air doesn’t weigh much BUT the box takes up space on planes, trucks and in the USPS vehicles. Plus the cardboard (which, to be fair, we recycle).

I have complained before about Amazon (as you can see below), and I do so as HUGE fan, a loyal customer and above all a very-happy shareholder (of AMZN).

UPS, cleverly, tried to get Amazon to be better by changing their pricing to include package DIMENSIONS as well as weight. Well, Amazon doesn’t use UPS that much, anymore! This was sent via USPS.

Sri Lanka, Turns Tails, And Stops Work On World’s Tallest Christmas Tree — Bloody Typical.

To NOW try and claim it is to appease the ‘Tanned Ratziner’, Sri Lanka’s Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith is disingenuous beyond belief — even for a Sri Lankan politician.

Ranjith has been against ostentatious displays of Christmas trees from the BLOODY start. Refer to my original post. The Buddhists wanted to build the tree to spite the cardinals. So to now say that this comes as news is very unbecoming.

All I can say is that Arjuna Ranatunga should have worn a BETTER BOX when he used to play cricket. If he had done so he would still have had some testosterone left.

I Got A Fujifilm X-E2s Camera — My First Fuji.

by Anura Guruge

IMG_20160518_223545

Don’t worry. I have some lenses. Just haven’t put one on yet.
Wanted to update the BODY Firmware to 1.01.

IMG_20160518_223452

Did update the BODY Firmware to 1.01. Very easy.
Very straightforward
(though I read the instructions 6 times to make sure I didn’t screw-up).

Wish checking firmware version was a MENU option.

I needed a new camera to replace the Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 (7 months old) and Panasonic Lumix LX100 (6 weeks old) that I gave away (to the same 17-year old boy) in an impulsive act of random kindness.

Yes, the plan is to get 2 cameras as I had in the past. But I already know what my BIG camera is going to be — my DREAM camera, the Fuji X-T2 that is due to be announced in the next 6 weeks. So that is settled. That is a given tryst with destiny. So what I was looking for was the ‘small’ camera to take the place of the LX100. I decided that I was NOT going to bother with a traditional compact. I never stick cameras in my jean pockets or my jacket pockets. So small size per se is not a factor. I prefer to carry all my cameras on my wrist — and you can see that my Fuji X-E2s already has two wrist straps attached. (I actually happened to have them as spares!)

Finally after 9 months of considerable thought and research I know, for sure (for sure), what I now want for in my cameras:

  1. Large sensor — at least APS-C.
  2. Mirrorless.
  3. Best still image quality, DAMN the 4K video.
  4. As much MANUAL control as possible, i.e., lots of dials and FN buttons.
  5. Good EVF (and damn hybrid and optical).

Given that list you can see why Fuji is the best fit for me. I did look, very seriously, at the Olympus PEN-F. Well it did NOT meet the above criteria.

Yes, I could have got a X-Pro1 at a bargain and IF I wanted the X-Pro2 that too was within my budgetary range. But I didn’t want a BIG camera not one with a weird hybrid viewfinder.

The Fuji X-E2s kind of fit the bill — though it is by no means perfect. I would have preferred 20MP resolution. It is also TWO FN buttons short. But from everything I read and saw (on YouTube) it is NOT a bad (little) camera.

Now that I have it, delivered in a sealed bag by Amazon, I like what I have seen. Menus, compared to Panasonic or Sony, are much easier to navigate. Q-menu much easier and direct than Panasonic. That firmware level cannot be checked from the menu is a pain (and inexcusable). But upgrading firmware (for the body) was a snap.

So that is where we stand. I haven’t used it as yet. I wasn’t going to rush. So stay tuned.
