British ‘National Health’ (NHS) Choir “Bridge Over You”, Christmas 2015 #1 — Beating Justin Bieber.

by Anura Guruge

IF unlike I, you do not follow U.K. news you might have missed this. Ameteur choir of British National Health Service (NHS) employees wins the 2015 Christmas #1 spot with “Bridge Over You”. All proceeds to CHARITY. Even Bieber pulled for them.

Great story. Very heartwarming. Very British. Shows everybody in a GREAT Light. A lovely way to wrap-up Boxing Day.

So I share it with you. Two videos, both (of course) on YouTube. Click to access.

Christmas this year, i.e., 2015, falls on the Full Moon.

This is rather special.
It does NOT happen as often as you think.

IF you have an exceptional memory for matters such as this you may believe that you actually remember this happening not that long ago — say 2004, 11 years ago. Actually the Full Moon in 2004 was on Boxing Day, i.e., December 26th, rather than the 25th.

The last time Christmas was on the Full Moon was in 1977.

Statistically a full moon will fall on a specific date, in this case Christmas, every 18.61 years. But Leap Years messes this up. Hence the 38 year gap in this case (essentially twice the ’19’ year gap).

The next Christmas on a Full Moon will be in 2034 — 19 years from now. Next one will be 2053.

So this is SPECIAL. Enjoy.

It is here. The day after Christmas — Boxing Day.

It is a major holiday for the British and much of the Commonwealth. A more jolly and festive British equivalent to the Friday after Thanksgiving; lots of sports and some shopping for those so inclined. Of course, it goes without saying, since it is a British holiday that a bit booze is consumed, here and there.

Hunting, fox hunting, used to be a big thing on Boxing Day. Still remember seeing a classic hunt, over the hills, in Owslebury, Hants (that is Hampshire) in 1974.

And, of course, Test Cricket — invariably with England playing Australia.

Sports is BIG part of the beloved ‘Boxing Day’ tradition.

In Blighty, of course, that means ‘footie‘ on Boxing Day — and yes, of course, I used to follow either Bristol City or Southamptondepending on where I was, either Home or Away and ‘we’ had good season tickets for Bristol City.

Alas it is too cold for outdoor cricket in December in the U.K. contrary to what Al Gore may think.

The TRADITIONAL Boxing Day cricket match, of course, is an ‘Ashes’ test against us and the Ozzies.

And that, of course, is happening again on Boxing Day.

That (my) Sri Lanka is playing cricket on Christmas Day kind of angers me. While it is one thing for me to be an heathen, Sri Lanka, despite what they think, is not totally heathen.

We still do have about 8% Christians. Plus, I am sure that the Captain Angelo (Angel) Mathews is Christian. Plus from all the ‘sign of the cross’ that I see from some of the players we do have other Christian players. While playing cricket on Christmas Day is not exactly a crime or sin, or even that bad of a thing, I hate to see Sri Lanka acting like we have no idea of ‘class’. Yes, of course, Pakistan will love to play cricket on Christmas. But, thank God (whoever that may be), that Sri Lanka is NOT Pakistan. I really do despair of what is happening in Sri Lanka.

A Bit Of British Nostalgia For The Holiday.

Anura Guruge, June 8, 2013.

I, as is no secret, miss my traditional British Holidays — Boxing Day and Hogmanay in particular. So I am going to indulge.

I got a bunch of these historic pictures from Sri Lanka earlier this week.
I shared all of them, via e-mail, with the 4 people I have on my ‘friends & family’ distribution lists. They loved them.

I checked the copyright — yet again.
Pictures before 1923 are now definitely out of copyright — in the U.S. of A.
So, if anybody claims copyright on these I would dearly like to see
their credentials for claiming as such.

Crazy busy. Another book is nearly at an end. But, I won’t publish it this year.
