Coros Vertix, $599, With NO Built-In Maps, Is A Joke & No Competition, Whatsoever, Even To A Garmin 5!

by Anura Guruge

I have a bit of spare time on my hand — for a RARE (bloody) treat. So, I am gainfully using it to see what is new on the smartwatch front.

I started by looking at Coros — which is trying hard to be a Garmin competitor.

I looked at their latest — the $599 Vertix.

I was struck fairly early on that its working temp. does not go below -20°C (-4°F). That is NOT good. In my youth I used to ski in -20°F up here in New Hampshire. -4°F is not uncommon in a normal February in New Hampshire. So, that had my antenna up.

They make a BIG DEAL about breadcrumb navigation. So, I looked into that. Then I discovered that breadcrumb trails have to be MANUALLY loaded in. Did more digging. NO MAPS.

Ah?

No built-in topo maps? Ah?

I didn’t believe my eyes.

So, I joined the Facebook Coros group and asked. Yes, I was right.

No maps.

No THANK YOU. I am not going to bother looking at Coros anymore. What a JOKE.

$599. Hilarious. What clowns.

Garmin Announces Fenix 5 Plus With Maps, Pay, Music & Galileo (GPS) etc. On June 18, 2018.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Text straight from Garmin.

The features are per what I gave you a heads up on 7-days ago: i.e., TOPO maps, Garmin Pay, Music & Galileo “GPS”.

One thing new is the expensive titanium cases. Lots of models. Check them out here, on the Garmin site.

It is claimed to have “blood oxygen” monitoring — and it does, BUT only in the Fenix 5X Plus. Got that. Just in the 5X Plus.

Garmin is claiming availability within the week BUT I doubt that. I will most likely UPGRADE to one, trade-in in my current Fenix 5, BUT I will probably wait till Christmas.

Garmin Fenix 5 Plus With Maps, Pay, Music & Galileo (GPS) On The Way.

by Anura Guruge

The belief is that this PLUS RANGE, across the Garmin Fenix 5, 5S & 5X, will be available by September. IF SO, given the problems with the first batch of Garmin Vivoactive 3 & Forerunner 645, I, for one, will wait till close to Christmas before getting one (assuming I do).

Given that Music and Pay are now available on the Forerunner 645 I knew it would just be a matter of time before Garmin had to offer it on the Fenix 5 range. I am interested in Pay, but not the music. I like the sound of silence I can experience where I run — i.e., basically in the woods of New Hampshire.

Built-in maps, as in the Fenix 5x, on a 5 Plus, would be nice.

Galileo navigation will augment GPS and GLONASS and promises to provide better accuracy since it is a non-military system aimed at consumers — such as us.

No wonder the Fenix 5 prices are dropping.

I will keep you posted.
