The very good news to parents and kids is that I am NOT referring to an ongoing situation. Instead this is still the fallout from a very serious bullying case I brought to your attention on June 6, 2014. All of what is transpiring continues to be very good news for parents (or most of them) and kids.

Well, we are now entered a different plane altogether. I continue to be amazed ….

I, of course, have NO gripes with this letter.

As I said yesterday I have heard similar allegations to this from two recent ex-ACS teachers.

So don’t get me wrong. I have no issues with this letter.

Just one thing that I want to clarify, something that has bothered me, greatly, since June 30, 2014 — so much so that I have called up and spent at least 40 minutes discussing ‘it’ with the N.H. Department of Education.

Towards the end of this letter, 4th para. from bottom, is as follows (and please do check the original above or at the source).

What she says about the students having a ‘very structured steps‘ etc. is true. She would know. She would have seen that in action.

She then also goes onto say ‘TRAINED PERSONNEL‘ in the school. In theory, and most instances in practice, this is TRUE — though you may want to check on your own whether Concord actually checks on this or enforces this. From what I was told this ‘training’ is a recommendation. But, as far as I know, and as ALWAYS I can be wrong, there are indeed some staff at ACS with the requisite and germane training. I think, but I could be very wrong, that ACS’s Assistant Principal Mikel Lachapelle is one of those that has had this training. Check this post. So all of this is good.

But here is the funny twist. It appears that ALL decisions related to bullying made at ACS can be reviewed by the School Board and if necessary overturned. That is good too. We need an hierarchical appellate process. All decent legal systems rely on this. But here is my confusion and Concord can’t or won’t help me. Are School Board Members, who are elected, TRAINED on how to handle bullying? Have they been on the same courses as Mikel Lachapelle? I DO NOT KNOW.

All I do know, because some mind-blowing official ACS letters to a parent re. bullying were sent to me, is that the ACS School Board can totally reverse and overturn bullying decisions made by the SUPPOSEDLY TRAINED ACS staff. So, hypothetically, lets say that the supposedly trained Assistant Principal Mikel Lachapelle per the ‘structured steps’ talked about by Lynda Whitehouse makes a decision about a bullying incident at ACS. It would appear that the Board could totally overrule him. I am GLAD. Nobody, not even the pope, is infallible. My question and confusion has to do with the supposed training. If the decision of a TRAINED professional is to be overturned shouldn’t the folks overturning it have equivalent, if not better, training? And to say that they consulted a lawyer doesn’t cut it. Lawyers know law. If it is that simple when it comes to bullying why bother with training. Just bring in lawyers from the get go.

Maybe this is what democracy is all about. IF so why bother with the training and the COSTS associated with it? Why don’t we just let the Board deal with ALL of the bullying cases?

I haven’t tried to raise this with the ACS folks. They have enough on the plate. Concord has no answers. They say it happens.

So, my point, is very simple. Lynda Whitehouse, QUITE CORRECTLY, talks about the ‘structured steps’ and ‘trained personnel‘ when it comes to students. She is right. What did not come across that there are further steps in this process and I am NOT sure whether those are handled by trained personnel.

That is it. I have real work to do. Cheers.

In the 2nd column, line 10, Lynda, who is a good writer, says, categorically “a one-man-show“.

That could be a figure of speech or it could be a pointed reference to ‘ONE MAN‘. Wonder which one it is — and if it is a POINTED reference which MAN she is pointing to. Now who could it be.

This is one heck of a letter. BRAVO Ms. Whitehouse. BRAVO.

This must have taken a LOT of courage and soul-searching — and, of course, support from many colleagues. I have heard similar, if NOT WORSE, from another ex-staff member. Actually now I think about it, I have heard similar from TWO.

Much has been happening on the ACS Bullying front this Summer.

I have, right here, ready for posting at the drop of a hat, some very damning OFFICIAL letters. They just appear in my e-mail! All of these are letters are very worrying. I have called up and spoken with the N.H. Dept. of Education — TWICE — this Summer, prompted by what I read in these letters.

What a way to start the 2014 – 2015 School Year. Tonight is the ‘Open Night’ for the kids.

The timing of this letter was not a coincidence. BRAVO, Mrs. Whitehouse.

We have tried, unsuccessfully, to raise awareness about bullying protection at Alton.

Now let me THINK. I found this in the MINUTES of a Prospect Mountain School Board meeting, April 8, 2014 meeting. Go to this Prospect Mountain page and download the 04-08-2014 School Board Minutes.

Well …

This used to be a supermarket. The only one in Meredith. Click to ENLARGE — for nostalgia.

Not sure whether I am as surprised at this foreclosure as I was of Mame’s. Though I knew it well, frequented it near daily, when I was in town and living in Meredith [1997 – 1999], and even knew (and socialized with) the firm of ‘Sticht & Ambrose‘ that developed it and owned it to begin with, I can’t say I have the same emotional attachment to this place as I had to Mame’s. During my time in Meredith, in addition to the supermarket, there was also a drugstore and NH Liquor Store there. It was a thriving ‘little’ place. I knew and heard that things started to go downhill a bit when the supermarket moved out. But, I thought things were on the up-and-up after Annalee Dolls moved in. [Yes, I knew the Thorndikes too.]

I did some quick checking today. Appears to have been most recently owned by a guy in Gilmanton, NH. Shame. But, the focus of Meredith really has changed, quite dramatically, to the waterfront. They have done a good job. Their downtown area is thriving from what I last saw — compared to say Alton. I hope these foreclosures are isolated incidents. I like Meredith.

Mame’s was #3 in my November 2012 “Ten In New Hampshire: Restaurants (Non-Buffet) In Central NH, Worth The Drive”.

I raved about their Pumpkin Ravioli at the 2012 Meredith  “Trick or Eat” (Got Lunch) on Sunday, October 28. In that post I said this about John Cook, who used to own and operate Mame’s: “Very good. Did themselves proud. Bravo. Owner John Cook (which is a great name other than the fact that he is also a commercial pilot) did ALL of the serving and clearing up. Nice touch. Many would not know that this was the legendary John Cook. I just asked him whether he was still flying. He was. He didn’t recognize me. I am 10 years older and haven’t weathered well. Very nice guy.”

Not much I need to or can add beyond that. That is very much a part of why I am so upset when I saw the auction notice in the local paper yesterday evening. Things like this should not happen to nice people like John Cook — unless, of course, he wanted it this way. I don’t know the story — at all. He was a commercial, private jet pilot — i.e., he would fly private jets, on contract. I assume the money was good. I remember talking to him in the evenings and hearing that he had done a ‘gig’ that day: flown a jet from Laconia or Portsmouth to Detroit earlier in the day and how he would hit a local gym while his client went to whatever meeting and then flying back.

I lived in Meredith, on the water, on what was the old, just 5 houses, Mile Point, from March 1997 to December 1999. Used to frequent Mame’s quite a bit those days. It was my late night eating place. Hence conversations such as above with John. More often than not I was the last patron to leave and John was fine with that. We would chat. 1997 to 1999 was still at the height of dot.com. I was travelling and working like a ‘brown’ — if not a black. I was in the air at least 3 – 4 days a week and that would typically explain the late night dining at Mame’s. If I was back from a trip and fancied somewhere nice to eat and have some good red wine (and I always had somebody who would drive me home) I would end up at Mame’s. It was cozy.

It is a shame. I will have to ask Julie of Giuseppe’s what the story is. I know that she too will be sad. From what I know the successful Meredith restaurant owners like Julie and John (at least till now) never viewed each other as competition. More like partners since they each addressed a different demand.

I wish John Cook nothing but the very best. I hope this all works out for him.

Read what it says in this very germane and topical Concord Monitor article — from March 2014.

Cost at Hopkinton seems reasonable.

I could as ever be wrong but I suspect that having cameras at ACS will be getting some attention over the next few weeks.

So this is just a heads up.

Ask yourself IF you are an ACS parent: wouldn’t you feel safer and happier IF you knew that there were cameras that could tell us all sorts of things?

Talking of cameras — do all the buses used by ACS now have cameras? They were supposed to. We know that some didn’t ’20 months’ ago when Devanee got slapped on her face, leaving fingerprints, on the bus — on the way home. That is when we took her out of ACS and homeschooled her for a year. We were told at that point, as was to be expected, that she happened to be on one of the ‘few’ buses that didn’t have cameras.

Bullying at Alton Central School (ACS) Raises Its Vicious,
Ugly Head Again
 — Dec. 6, 2013.

New Hampshire Department of Education (DOE) Offers
3rd-Party Moderator Program For Bullying Cases
Jan. 28, 2014.

Worrying bullying cases at ACS seem to be endemic.

A really bad situation, with physical violence (i.e., kid’s head been banged into a locker with consequent bleeding and scarring), has been going on at ACS for the last month or so. Lawyers, from both sides, have been involved as has some town officials. At least one kid has been taken out of ACS to be homeschooled because of this ongoing situation. [We can relate to that. We took Devanee out of ACS and homeschooled her for a year because of bullying at ACS.]

I have been getting updates on this bullying case for the last ‘month’ but I declined to say anything because of some ‘sensitivities’.

Today things have escalated further. It has got real serious.

This case could have some far reaching repercussions.

Hopefully something will finally get done about this never-ending bullying incidents at ACS.

I will post what I can and what I think I can divulge.

So the Principal, who was constantly ‘under the gun’ for bullying, will be leaving under a dark cloud, bullying still a major unresolved and now openly festering issue at ACS.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling that there will once again be parents at the next ACS School Board meeting talking about bullying. [Search my past posts!]
