We got Wi-Fi with TDS, in October 2019, as part of our 1 Gig upgrade. They installed a Wi-Fi range extender in addition to the standard router. With 1 Gog to the house we had decent Wi-Fi in the house — though this is a 4-storey house of around 3,400 sq. ft.

I never had any issues with this TDS provided Wi-Fi, though I don’t use Wi-Fi that much since my PCs are hardwired to the Extender.

Wife and daughter, who are exclusively on Wi-Fi, have complained, more of less from day one, that they keep on getting Internet drops. They kept on complaining. Last week I had enough. I called up TDS. I had no idea that they had a new MESH network-based offering. I was willing to give it a try.

This afternoon two technicians came and set it all up. It took longer than it should have because we have TDS TV, and that means the old router still has to be there. The main issue, however, was to get some port forwarding back in place.

But, we got it up. We have Wi-Fi. We get decent bandwidth. Not sure if we get more than we did before.

Early days. The question is whether this Mesh network will prevent those connection drops.

We will wait and see. I will keep you posted.

But, for now, as of today, we have the Eero-based Wi-Fi+ Mesh Network from TDS.

We have one ‘Eero Pro‘, i.e.,the router/broadcaster, and two ‘Eero Beacons‘, i.e., the range extender

Selling Off Amazon Shares On Cyber Monday Is Incredibly STUPID — Just Herd Mentality!

by Anura Guruge

Click to access v. germane ‘MarketWatch’ story.

From “MarketWatch” — use link above to access chart if you need to. Otherwise: marketwatch.com

Betting against Amazon post-Black Friday and during what is really ‘Cyber Week’, rather than just Cyber Monday, is PLAIN STUPID.

You know, and I know, that Amazon is making out like a bandit.

Others might do well, but in the end Amazon would still have done better.

Why bet against Amazon (AMZN) to YOUR detriment.

Today’s 1.9% drop should be a buying opportunity.

Amazon will go past $800 before the year is out AND ahead of the Fed’s, inevitable (spite Trump), December rate increase.

This is not the time to sell. Wait for it t0 get to $800+ — then sell JUST ahead of the December Federal Reserve meeting December 13 – 14, 2016.

But for now … BUY, BUY, BUY AMZN.

Full disclosure: I own AMZN and I am very long.

9:30am (Eastern) Was THE Time To ‘Buy’ Post Brexit ‘Leave’ Vote. SMILE.

by Anura Guruge

Chart for “Salesforce.com” (CRM), on June 24, 2016 — day after Brexit. From “marketwatch.com” of course — who else? Click to ENLARGE and marvel.

I stayed up till 1:30am (Eastern) watching the Referendum results, LIVE, on BBC 1 on my Roku, “UK TV” channel. [To my disappointment BBC election coverage came across as primitive compared to what we have got used to in the U.S.!]

I was surprised by the result and I really do have genuine, mixed feelings. I am not wildly euphoric that we voted, in a non-binding referendum, to LEAVE — though, deep, deep down, my sentiments are with LEAVE, which is how I voted, 41 years ago in the 1st Referendum.

I don’t believe that this is a done deal and a lot of water will flow under the collectives bridges of the EU before we see anything definitive 2.5 years, minimum, from now.

That the markets reacted the way they did was hilarious to I. It is crazy. Why sell stock today? What has changed?

But I was glad. I had been waiting, biding my time, for a pullback of this magnitude. SMILE. That is what clever investing is all about.

Was on Fidelity at 9:30am. I had NOT factored in that Fidelity would be slow! I should have remembered from past days like this. But it wasn’t too bad.

I wanted to buy more “salesforce.com” (CRM) and “Facebook” (FB) shares — some for the kids. Got it done. I was all done by 9:35am.

Why would AMZN go down $20 in the day? How will Brexit impact AMZN? I don’t think it will. Strangely AMZN options, my bread-and-butter, were not cooperating. Shame. But that is OK. I am not greedy, never was.

More on my feelings on Brexit in another post.

But for now, SMILE. SMILE. SMILE.

P.S., If Scotland AGAIN tries to break away I will be beyond bummed.

The Misleading Offers To “Name A Star” For A Loved One For Valentine’s For $58 by ‘Star Registry’.

I heard the ‘name a star for your loved one’ commercial on the radio — ahead of this weekend’s Valentine’s Day — a few times tonight and it irked me. If not a scam outright, it is deceiving innocent people who don’t realize that you can’t pay for the privilege of naming a star. You probably could and should spend the $58 on something more tangible.

This article explains the clever wording around the ‘U.S. Copyright Office’ registration claim. They enter all the names in a book, and when they have a few thousand names in that book, they register that book! The name is in the registered book, but it is the book that has been copyrighted not the name per se.

Though I have always, as for as long as I can recall, been a huge fan of Amazon, and as of 2011 used them for ALL of my book publishing, it is only this year, as a fully-paid up Amazon Prime member and an AMZN stockholder that I truly started to see that Amazon is invincible — at least over the next few years. These days I am just in total awe of Amazon. Like Google they really are at the top of their game.

Click to ENLARGE. Guess what line is UPS and what is AMZN.

Given the amount of online shopping that I do with Amazon, 88 orders in the last 6 months (i.e., 14 orders a month), I know their shipping habits pretty well and, moreover, I keep them honest. IF they miss the 2-day shipping on a Prime item I call them up. So far I have had 2 months of FREE Prime and $10 of gift credit. While they do quite well with UPS outside of the Christmas window, Christmas is always a challenge — as is the number of items now getting shipped directly from China, outside of Prime. I know that AMZN dearly wants to fix that.

That they are thinking of doing some of their own shipping has been an open secret for months. Makes a lot of sense.

But to me what would make sense is for them to buy (or merge with) UPS or FedEx. I am sure UPS shareholders would LOVE IT. Their shares have been going nowhere while AMZN keeps on defying gravity. Also in terms of Market Cap AMZN is 4 times that of UPS and 8 times that of FedEx.

There will be synergies PLUS Amazon can get a piece of the eBay action! Sweet. Talking of which I am surprised that AMZN hasn’t started offering auctions. They could kill eBay (and I own eBay shares too).

So just a thought.

I know this is a familiar (and often stressful) fall ritual for so many parents — getting a musical instrument for band.

This year, Teischan having given up on piano after 2 years (and after we got one), decided she wants to try the flute. That pleases me because I really would like a daughter who can play a musical instrument — and I really don’t care what, though a violin, a flute or guitar does have appeal. While I am all in favor of leasing cars/vans/trucks renting musical instruments does not make sense to me. I would rather just buy one.

Well we lucked out, or thought we did so, on a flute. A friend (a good one at that) gave us a Bundy that their daughters had used. That is Teischan, this weekend, at the Laconia Multicultural Day, with the Bundy, at the top. The ‘neck’ needed to be fixed and the amazing music teacher that we have got that done for us for $10! So we thought we were all set. Well …

Appears that the Bundy is ‘OK’ but the seals are ‘going’ and that makes it hard for a beginner, such as Teischan, to come to terms with it. Appears that replacing the seals is not cheap.

So I had a chat with the music teacher. He suggested that I get another used flute from ‘Manchester Music Mill‘. So I called them up. They had a Bundy, from the 1980s, in good condition, that they were willing to sell for $200 — in a ‘better’ case from another flute! Hhhhmmm.

I, of course, checked Amazon. You can get new flutes, some of them pretty impressive looking, for $90 or under. BUT, I knew that their quality would NOT make the grade. Plus I assiduously read the reviews — I always do (or try to).

Then I stumbled upon the Nuvo plastic flute — in Pink. Bingo. Anything in pink is special to Tesichan and the color alone will make her more inclined to ‘like it’.

I read the description and review. They said the sound was fine and that it played well. They said it was LIGHT and that encouraged kids to practice on it for longer. So the notion was a new, new technology flute, with new seals, for about the price for a used one from 1980.

So over the weekend I had a number of e-mail exchanges with Teischan’s music teacher. He is young, talented and open to new ideas. I was sure he would say ‘Noway. Will not conform to our standard’. But, no. He checked it out and like me was intrigued. He had had good luck with other plastic instruments and was now willing to check this out — given that I was game in terms of buying one.

Well it arrived today — via FedEx. Two other items I ordered, from Amazon, on the same order came via UPS 40 minutes earlier. Teischan was bummed. She thought she was not getting the flute today.

She loves it. Noticed at once that it was light. Also the spare parts that came with it. They encourage you to wash it and get it wet. They even say it is OK to use it while taking a shower. Well …

We will see. I will keep you posted. So far so good and it is PINK — and that alone makes a huge difference to Teischan.

AutoServ In Tilton, NH Opens A Gym For Employeess & Customers. I Am Impressed.

Anura Guruge

Was in Friday, January 18, 2013 edition of ‘The Laconia Daily Sun’. Click to access their Website.

We have yet to buy a car from them. The last car we bought, actually leased, was a Kia from TeamKia in Concord and they impressed as mightily.

But the J.P. who married us 10 years ago, John P. Kimball II, now works there as a salesperson and we got to know the ‘owner’, now NH Senator Andrew Hosmer during the election. So things might change.

But, I was impressed to read about the gym. It is definitely good for the employees. I have heard, from John, that they have quite a nice restaurant/cafeteria for employees and customers. So, this makes double sense. Not sure I want to exercise while I am waiting for them to fix my car — though I will confess that it is an option to think about. We usually get a shuttle to take us to a shopping mall. But, this is good. Bravo, AutoServ. Maybe I will buy my next vehicle, most likely a van, from you. Cheers.

Us with John Kimball, of AutoServ, having dinner at the Sea Bird, Wolfeboro, on New Year’s Eve 2013 — the eve of our 10 year anniversary; John having married us.
