The (Latest) UNIFICATION Of Italy Was Proclaimed This Day, 156-Years Ago — March 17, 1861

hjby Anura Guruge

The Proclamation was by the First Italian Parliament, meeting in Turin. The Parliament had been assembled by Victor Emmanuel.

On March 17, 1861, this Parliament proclaimed that Italy was once again UNITED and that Victor Emmanuel would be the new King of Italy.

It took ANOTHER 10-days before Rome was declared the capital of Italy — since they had to placate a very irate pope!

Would You Like A Colorful, Batik Sarong For Father’s Day?

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and view here. The sarong, if you haven’t worked it out, is the lower part. The shirt, quite literally, goes on top, unless, as is common in tropical Sri Lanka, you are habitually topless. The price, however, seems a bit steep. From Kapruka. Use the link below to access Kapruka.

My grandfather in a formal sarong on being made a JP by the British. Click.

I have never, ever, worn a sarong! That is yet another reason why I was never a true Sri Lankan.

To be fair much of that probably had to do with the fact that I left Sri Lanka (Ceylon at the time) when I was quite young, 13 to be precise. You didn’t get into sarongs until you were a bit older — especially if, like I, you were from an aspirational upper middle-class family, living in the capital Colombo — particularly so if you had an adoptive mother who was an out-and-out anglophile. I wore shorts (most of the time), tailored longs for special occasions and pajamas to sleep in. It was (thank Buddha) very British and I was very comfortable with all of that. My adoptive father, when at home, and not meeting with the myriad visitors we had each day, would wear a sarong. He too was very comfortable with that. But he came from a different background to my mother. All my older male relatives, in private, wore sarongs.

My paternal grandfather wore only wore sarongs.

But not I. I have no problem walking around with a towel around my waist but I cannot see myself in a sarong. Kind of funny.

Again, this is Kapruka. So this a Father’s Day gift to be delivered in Sri Lanka.

But it you need a sarong it is not difficult to make. Start with a bed sheet and have someone sew it into loop. That is it. Differs from a towel in that it is a sewn together loop of fabric. Happy Father’s Day.

I just called up the Wolfeboro Chamber and checked. Yes, it is official. No Wolfeboro ‘First Night’ this year; i.e., December 31, 2015 — January 1, 2016.

And NO midnight fireworks!

Instead fireworks at 6:30 pm. Mitt Wept (I hope).

This is very sad.

Yes, folks like us are to blame. We did NOT attend the last two years, having been stalwarts for a few years previously. We wanted a BIGGER, BETTER show. Yikes.

Wolfeboro Inn and others are putting on their own events. But that is not the same.

As far as I am concerned double-whammy for Wolfeboro in 2016 ALREADY — and we haven’t even begun the year. First ‘Great Waters’ CANCELS the gala ‘Chorus & Orchestra’ event for 2016. Now this.

And the crazy thing is that it ISN’T  as if Wolfeboro, NH — the Capital of Heated Driveways in the Northeast — does NOT have the money to fund such events. Any of the folks that run the Heated Driveways — and I am sure that some of them have them on even now though the temperature is in the 40s — could easily finance First Night without even flinching.

Well, there is ALWAYS Boston. I am no longer big on Portsmouth. Their First Night is ‘neither here nor there’. Just go to Boston.

‘Guy Fawkes Night’, November 5, Is Next Week; Used To Be Celebrated As ‘Pope Day’ In The U.S., Especially Boston.

Guy (Guido) Fawkes was a Catholic and his plot was to bring back Catholicity to England. Wikipedia entry is good: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes_Night

Another British holiday I miss. Maybe I should talk with my new friend, British Gordon Preston about doing a ‘Guy Fawkes Night’ bonfire at his farm.

November 5th was celebrated in the U.S., pre-Independence, as ‘Pope Day’. But it was done, given that Guy was Catholic, as a vehemently anti-Catholic event — especially in then increasingly Catholic Boston. Well that won’t fly — that easily — anymore, especially not in Boston, the capital of Ireland.

Just a heads up. Check my two links at the top. I have written about this at length.

Polonnaruwa along with the older Anuradhapura are two ancients and (justly) much celebrated (not to mention venerated) Buddhist capitals in Sri Lanka. I know both of them well. Spent a lot of time, at both places, in my youth. I last visited in 1980. They both have iconic, impressive and sobering Buddhist artifacts — stupa, statues, remains of monasteries and libraries. This movie will do much to get the world to appreciate the beauties and magic of Sri Lanka. I am glad.

Note not the ONLY major movie filmed in Sri Lanka. “The Bridge Over River Kwai” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” were ALSO filmed in Sri Lanka.
