I was standing at a ‘Market Basketsupermarket checkout this afternoon when I fancied a drink, it being a warm day. These Bai drinks were right next to I so I took one, and by force of habit, read the LABEL. For the last 6-years I rarely, if ever, eat or drink something, WITHOUT reading the label — IF it has one. I try, real hard, to limit my carbs.

So, I am NO STRANGER to Nutritional Labels and especially the Carbohydrate numbers. Trust me when I tell you that this is the first time I have seen ‘Erythritol’ on a label. I was confounded. I knew it had to be a sugar since it was listed as a carbs. What I didn’t know was how bad it would be for I.

So, I had to check.

To be fair I think the jury is still out. I am NOT going to rush off and start consuming large quantities of Erythritol. It seems too good to be true, and in my dotage I am leery of such products.

I also looked up when they started adding (the likes of) Erythritol to food labels. Appears that the FDA gave this the green light in 2009 — 10-years ago. But, reporting it, as yet, from what I can see, appears to be voluntary! That means all manufacturers do not have to list it — which would explain why I had never seen it before.

Hope this helped.

‘Metamucil’ — The HUGE Difference Between “Real Sugar” & “Sugar Free”.

by Anura Guruge

When buying ‘Metamucil‘ or a store-brand equivalent (e.g., Walmart’s ‘Equate’) be very careful as to the sugar content you are getting. Basically there are two flavors: ‘real sugar’ & ‘sugar free’. The ‘real sugar’ version indeed contains a fair amount of sugar at the expense of dietary fiber. I am not really sure why somebody would want this — more sugar, less fiber. Maybe there are some applications for diabetics. Taste alone should not be a factor.

But, of course, it is up to you. Just be aware as to what you are getting. Read the label.

If you are cool with all that sugar go for it.

To I that is dangerous carbs and calories. Like jugging sugar-loaded soda. I prefer the ‘Sugar Free’. Just wanted to share this with you.

I Have Become Hooked On Yoplait’s New ‘Oui’ French Yogurt In A Cute Glass Jar.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the official Website ‘Oui’.

I stumbled upon these cute ‘Oui‘ jars, serendipitously, in Cambridge, MA, when we were there yesterday for ‘Revels‘.

I eat some form of yogurt each day and have been doing so for 20-years.

Of late I have restricted myself to plain, Greek yogurt to keep away from the sugar and sweeteners.

But, I had a strawberry-flavored ‘Oui’ as a treat. I was hooked.

Today, when I was at Walmart I went looking for them. Much to my delight they had some. I bought 5 jars … key lime, mango, blueberry and raspberry.

But, this will be just over Christmas.

I have been too chicken to even look at the label. I am sure it is ultra-high in carbs. Yikes. This is not good for me. But, I cannot resist.

“Poor People’s Pub”, Wakefield (NH): Revisited For Father’s Day — June 18, 2017.

New Hampshire’s #1 Lobster Roll in 2017!

It was Father’s Day, and as such I could pick — and I picked “Poor People’s Pub“.

I had only been there once before, on April 29, 2017, for their 43rd birthday bash — but, I liked what I had and what I saw. My kind of place given that I am very much a ‘Shake It‘ kind of person. You have to go there to see what that is all about. {SMILE}

I had a good time. It was around 1:30pm and that is a tad too early for I. So, I had just their hot dog special and their roast beef sandwich, sans the bread and chips. Yes, just the meat. I brought all the carbs home for the dogs.

It is a fun place and I like the location. Great place to take pictures.

Jimbo, the ‘Hobo’, nor any of the family was around and that was a shame and a loss. They were, quite rightly, celebrating Father’s Day away from the maddening crowd.

Devanee had the lobster roll, New Hampshire’s BEST per WMUR — with or without Russian help in the voting — and liked it. Deanna, the lobsterman’s daughter, refused to have lobster in New Hampshire on the grounds that we are going to Maine twice and she would rather eat lobster there — close to the ocean! I wanted meat and the hot dog special was right up my alley — as was also the case with Teischan.

The house red was GOOD. Much appreciated.

Well, I will be going back again …

Cheers.

The carbs I brought back for the dogs. It is OK.
They get plenty of exercise, running and swimming.

Quaker Instant Oatmeal “Best Bowl” Finalist Flavors Are A Treat — Check Them Out.

by Anura Guruge

A bowl of oatmeal is a cornerstone of my near 4-year long v. low-carb diet. Few months into the diet I realized that I need some bulk and I like oatmeal (and it is supposed to be good for you).

Recently I have been using plain oatmeal BUT when I saw this box at Walmart (on Sunday when we were there to buy two Christmas trees) I could not resist.

Apple Cheddar Rosemary!

Vanilla Chai!

Lemon Ricotta Pancake!

I tried the ‘Apple Cheddar Rosemary’. It wasn’t very strong. Pleasant enough. I will have to try it again and make sure to be more attentive.

Just thought you might be interested. So I had to share. Enjoy.

“Noosa” — A Fine Yogurt With Pepper-Spiced Heat, BUT Alas Too ‘Rich’ For Me.

by Anura Guruge

noosa

Click image to access the “Noosa Yoghurt” Website.

I swung by Hannaford in Alton to pick up some items this afternoon and came across a lady doing a taste demo for this yogurt — or yoghurt, as they call it. She made a point of telling me to try the yogurt with HEAT — i.e., yogurt with chilli peppers. Well I like pepper and as I have talked about before, I eat a yogurt each and every day and have been doing so for nearly 20 years.

I tried the “Blackberry/Serrano” and loved it. She gave me a 55 cent coupon and I bought a container. It is a double size container — i.e., twice as much as your normal yogurt container.

When I came home I read the label. I was SHOCKED. The fat and carbs are WAY ABOVE what I would normally indulge in. A very rich yogurt. But it sure tasted good. Yum. Yum. Would love to eat some everyday with the chilli but I couldn’t handle all that extra fat and carbs given that I, yet again, need to lose some weight!

I am going to try adding some chilli to my normal Greek yogurt. I will tell you if I crack the recipe.

Say “YES” To Most Anything BUT Carbs — Carbs Kill.

by Anura Guruge

From the U.K. “Daily Mail“, August 23, 2016.

nocarbscxgxv

Cutting back on carbs 3.5 years ago was THE BEST thing I ever did for myself — in all of my life.

Not only did I lose 28 – 30 pounds BUT I made dramatic improvements on the ‘blood sugar’ (i.e., glucose) and cholesterol fronts.

Yes, I cut back on carbs because I had hit the ‘pre-diabetic’ limit. I managed, just via diet and exercise, to bring down my glucose from 102 to 90. I am happy.

PLEASE do not believe this rubbish. Carbs will kill you — faster than what you deserve.

More Bad News For Carbs. Now Thought To Cause Lung Cancer!

I dramatically cut back on carbs 3 years and 2 months ago. So for the last 38 months I have had NO bread (of any type or color), no rice (whatsoever), no bagels, no muffins, no donuts, no pizza (other than a few pizza bites), no pasta, no cakes, no pies, no ice cream, no puddings, no desserts! Yes, I lost some weight.

That is NOT to say I do not ingest carbs. That would be impossible. Plus I worked out that I need some amount of carbs, if nothing else to keep my digestive tract somewhat appeased (though I can tell you (for free) that low carb diets wreak havoc on your stomach especially when you are old (as am I)). I still have my mandatory, medicinal DAILY glass of red wine. That has carbs. I eat Activia yogurt (because it is supposed to help with my stomach). That has lots of carbs. I eat one cup of oatmeal a day — again for my stomach (along with quite a bit of Metamucil). So I do ingest a fair amount of carbs and of late I am PUTTING ON WEIGHT, however hard I try. C’est la vie.

Not sure whether I believe this study. But wanted to share it with you for what it is worth.

‘That Makes A Lot Of Sense’ All-in-One, Dual Breakfast Sandwich Maker From Buydig.com.

by Anura Guruge

sandwichmaker

Click to access BuyDig.com listing with lot more — rather MOUTHWATERING — pictures.

This happened to pop-up on my Facebook ‘page’ since I do follow ‘BuyDig.com‘ — my preferred source for cameras (of late), primarily because I like the ‘style’ (and, to be honest, the name) of their Super Salesman(-in-Charge), Ray Messiah.

I could immediately see the potential. I love breakfast sandwiches though I can no longer indulge in carbs whether it be a muffin, biscuit or bagel. So this sandwich maker per se will not really be that useful for I. When I go to McDonald’s (which is quite often) I now invariably get at least two breakfast sandwiches for myself — especially now that some of the sandwiches are available all day. I, however, take both slices of ‘bread’, irrespective of what it is, and just eat the inside. THEN I wrap the ‘bread’ in the original wrapper and bring it home for the dogs. That I get two helps. One each. They know. They sit and wait expectantly — but don’t get too agitated because they know there is one for each.

Anywho … I thought some of you may find this sandwich maker of use. Enjoy.

Dannon’s ‘Activia’ Probiotic Yogurt — Effectiveness Appears To Plateau Then Peter Off.

by Anura Guruge

activia_cherry

Until this past weekend I had been eating at least one ‘Activia’ Probiotic yogurt — typically the larger container — every day (bar maybe 4 days in total) since Monday, April 27, 2015. So that was 231 days of eating ‘Activia’.

To begin with it worked, as claimed, like a charm and I was signing its praises. I had started eating ‘Activia’ because I was sure that I would have been able to claim that the ‘Activia’ Challenge did not work and as such I needed my money back. But I was happy with ‘Activia’ for months. The Challenge Worked! I will gladly admit that.

What is even more interesting is that I was not a newcomer to eating daily yogurt. I had been eating a yogurt a day, bar a very, very occasional lapse, since 1998. So by the time I started eating ‘Activia’ I had been on daily yogurt for 17 years. And even with that I could tell that ‘Activia’ made a difference.

But of late I have been getting skeptical about ‘Activia’ benefits as it applied to I. The biggest problem being that the ‘Activia’ that we can readily buy in New Hampshire — i.e., regular ‘Activia’ — is VERY HIGH in Carbs. 18g of Carbohydrates per small container, 15g of that sugar. This was starting to impact my low-carb diet. Plus I had noticed that the ‘Activia’ was not as effective as it had been to start with it.

So, with reluctance, I decided to ditch the ‘Activia’ and go back to my Cabot Low-Fat Greek Yogurt, that I had been eating, daily, for about a year before I started ‘Activa’. One whole tub of the Cabot has about the same carbs as a small container of ‘Activia’. Yes, of course, it doesn’t taste anywhere near as good BUT I can’t afford to be this fat. Have to lose more weight. So that is my story.500_greek-vanilla-2lb
