Posting the Catholic Press Photo, “Pope’s Christmas Card,” has been one of my cherished annual traditions since 2008, one that I eagerly look forward to as soon as we enter December.

2015 card2016 card & 2017 card.

I used to post them on my then widely read but now defunct “Popes and Papacy” blog.

The Rome-based Catholic Press Photo, established over 40 years ago, now led by Alessia Giuliani, the daughter of one of the founders, has been a good friend. This gives me a chance to highlight their excellent work. Enjoy their pictures … especially those of the cardinals.

This year’s card comes with good wishes from Alessia, Monica, Giancarlo e Emanuela.

Thank YOU.

Merry Christmas.

Sri Lankan Archbishop Emeritus, Oswald Gomis’ 2017 Christmas Greetings.

by Anura Guruge

arch_oswaldAs with posting the Catholic Press Photo, “Christmas Card,” posting Archbishop Oswald Gomis‘ Christmas card is an annual, honored and cherished privilege.

He has been a good and valued friend for many years.

He and my adoptive father were roughly contemporaneous and firm friends though on many issues related to religion they were on opposite sides. But, that was the beauty and magic of WHAT WAS Ceylon in the 1950s and 1960s. Folks were still friends, relatives and neighbors irrespective of religion.

Father Gomis is a wonderful human being. And to I, that is all that matters. He is now 85-years old.

Enjoy.

Thank YOU.

Merry Christmas.

Over the last few years he has been using the ‘+’ in front of his name.

That is not a plus sign. It is meant to be a CROSS. It is meant to connote a title assumed by clergy in the medieval times — that of a SINNER. So, the ‘+’ indicates that the Archbishop is signing himself, out of HUMILITY, as a ‘sinner’.

I have been publishing the ‘Catholic Press PhotoChristmas Greeting, typically featuring the pope, yearly since 2008 — albeit on my ‘popes-and-papacy‘.

Alessia Giuliani who heads Catholic Press Photo created by her father.

They are a Rome-based agency and they follow the pope around daily. A very nice bunch of folks too led by Alessia Giuliani.

This is this year’s card.

The top part, of course, is easy: “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”.

The bottom part, signed by ‘Papa Francesco‘ is from the Pope’s Palm Sunday, 2013, homily for the XXVIII World Youth Day on March 24, 2013.

It says: “Ours is not a joy born of having many possessions, but from having encountered a Person: Jesus“.

Here is the Homily containing that quote directly from the Vatican.
