The Tragic Kansas “Swatting” Shooting — Where Was 911 “Caller ID”?

by Anura Guruge

This is so sad and tragic. What a shame. An innocent life lost — and he was UNARMED. It is NO consolation, but it is an huge indictment on current society, that some of us are just ‘relieved’ that he wasn’t black … because that would just make matters worse. A shame. A shame.

I, however, have had a nagging question from the moment I managed to work out what happened and UNDERSTOOD that it was a FAKE CALL.

What happened to CALLER ID?

Caller ID is the first thing that pops up, at the ‘Emergency Center‘, when you make a 911 call.

Did Caller Id indicate it was a California number? If so it is possible that they assumed that it might have been a cell phone.

Wouldn’t they — shouldn’t they — have been a bit more cautious IF it was an out-of-state Caller ID or if Caller ID had been blocked?

I have NOT heard anybody address this.

I really would like to hear what attention was paid to the Caller ID.

Wouldn’t you.

John Kelly, White House Chief Of Staff, Appears To Have Been Using A HACKED Cell Phone!

by Anura Guruge

Google for MORE …

This is NOT, I repeat, NOT, an April Fool’s Joke. If it was, nobody would believe it — anyway.

This is BEYOND the pale. This is unreal.

John Kelly, before becoming White House Chief of Staff, was U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security from January 20, 2017 to July 31, 2017.

It appears his phone was compromised for some period during THIS TIME!

He was Secretary of Homeland Security and he was using a HACKED PHONE?

Come On?

What hope do we have?

Very Distressing Development For Camera Nuts — Cell Phone Cameras Getting Real Good!

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access ‘DPReview’ forum post. Worth checking out.

This is an unignorable fact of life. Cell phone cameras are getting better and better.

Yes, yes, yes. They have TINY sensors and in the end that will always be an issue, BUT IF the photos are for Web consumption, as are most of mine, you are hard pressed to tell the difference.

That is the issue.

Yes, as soon as you start to ENLARGE the images you can start telling the difference. But, on the Web — this blog or Facebook — most people just look at the posted image and you, most often that not, cannot tell the difference.

I am very aware of this. To I it is not really a case of what others think. I take pictures for my personal gratification and I like using a big, fancy camera.

Just sharing with you … {SMILE}

This tragedy, Amtrak train 188 derailment with 7 fatalities, hit close to home. I was booked on an Amtrak train to Philadelphia on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Suffice to say I can’t get to Philadelphia by train at the moment. But that is small potatoes and I am not going to bitch about that (though I am put out by how poorly Amtrak is handling the aftermath). The accident, however, totally rattled Deanna. It was too ‘close’ for her comfort.

I had, hours ahead of the reports, suspected speed. But even I had not thought the train would have been going at TWICE the speed limit.

They say that they have ruled out terrorism but I think they might have to revisit that.

The engineer, Brandon Bostian, was up to SOMETHING. He had to accelerate that train from a dead stop, at Philadelphia’s station, to 106 mph in less than 10 minutes. That is going some.

Was he trying to a Germanwings?

Is he another Andreas Lubitz? Trial run that went wrong?

Yes, I know he hit the emergency brakes 2 seconds ahead of the crash. That doesn’t rule out attempted suicide. He just might have lost his nerve at the last minute.

Was he on antidepressants? Will they be even allowed to ask?

I am AMAZED that he was allowed to have a cell phone on him. There is a warrant out for it (and a claim that he has already handed it in). I thought engineers were no longer permitted electronics in the cab?

If he was on the phone ‘they’ should, before any other punishment, shove that phone down his throat. 7 people killed.

I have not been following what has happened to other ‘at fault’ engineers. This guy deserves all that awaits him.

From everything that I have seen on TV about the Apple iWatch it is going to be MUCH MORE distracting that a smartphone.

People driving around, especially on I-93 (or equivalent) with an iWatch on their wrist SCARES me. This is NOT FUNNY.

I am pretty sure that the cell phone ban that comes into play on July 1, 2015 in New Hampshire will NOT cover smart watches.

Something has to be done.

I dread that we will get the first Apple iWatch related traffic fatality this weekend — within 48 hours of it becoming available. That is not a pleasant thought. It could be somebody that YOU or I know!

Not an easy problem to solve. This is more serious than DWI!

About an hour ago, while getting dressed (after my run), I saw a bimbo (and she indeed was one), on CNBC, glibly talking about her experiences DRIVING while wearing the new Apple Watch. She also volunteered that she had also been ‘told off’  — along the lines of “that is very distracting” — at a recent business meeting for continually glancing down at her watch, on her wrist, every time it beeped, vibrated whatever.

Distracted driving scares me, especially since nearly all young drivers do not seem to be able to drive unless they have GPS.

I dread that the Apple Watch is going to result in TOO MANY accidents. From what I can see, unless they act very, very quickly, the current ‘Distracted Driving’ laws will NOT cover the Apple Watch. Technically it is NOT a cell phone. Plus it will be difficult for the police to enforce Apple Watch wearing while driving.

The Watch is going to be more distractive than a phone per se since it is attached to your wrist and it ‘does things’. People will GLANCE DOWN at their wrist. Worse still they will move their hands, and with it the steering wheel, to look at the Watch.

This is going to be a problem. I am SURE Apple has warnings and disclaimers on the packaging that comes with the Watch. But how do you stop a person from USING their Apple Watch when driving? I am a loyal, long term APPL shareholder though we haven’t had a single Apple product in the house for well over 15 years!

This bothers me. Deaths will come. Right now 9 deaths a DAY due to distracted driving. That is 9 too much. What do YOU think?

Alton Central School (ACS) ‘Back To School Night’ On August 26: I Was Pretty Impressed. Some Dedicated Staff.

This along with both verbal and written offers saying that he will happily work with kids needing additional help on Saturday or Sunday mornings is pretty impressive. Pretty amazing. Kudos.

With possibly one small exception, and ‘small‘ here is THE keyword, I really haven’t had any issues with the teaching staff at Alton Central. In general I find them to be a great bunch and we have been lucky to have had some very exceptional teachers for both Devanee and Teischan.

Yesterday’s ‘Back to School Night’ just confirmed my long held (since 2007 when Devanee started attending ACS) beliefs that we have some wonderful teachers at ACS. I feel bad about the ‘politics’, much of it having to do with The Board, that must drive them to distraction. Yes, it would be nice if they had a better, newer school BUT I was kind of surprised to see how well the Middle School was equipped and how BIG Teischan’s 2nd Grade classroom was. I went to school in a 3rd world, dirt poor country. There were 60 kids per class and our classrooms were 1/4 of the size of Teischan’s room for 19 or 20 kids. We managed and I did get one heck of an education!

Teischan has a teacher that was Devanee’s teacher 6 years ago. So we know her, we like her and she knows us. So that was good. We are happy.

Devanee is back at ACS after a 18 month hiatus after we took her out in February 2012 because of bullying. I am still not 100% happy that she is back at ACS. I worry. But trying to homeschool her was very stressful for Deanna though Devanee did do quite well with homeschooling.

All of the Middle School and the teachers there were new to me. I really had had no exposure to them. We spoke to 4 of them and I was very favorably impressed and grateful. Some very committed, dedicated and talented folks here. That is good. I heard Mr. LaFreniere tell another parent, while we were in line, that he would come in on a Saturday morning if a kid needed additional help. My ears pricked up. That is dedication beyond the call of duty. Then this morning Deanna woke me up, just after a 8 (and as such 20 – 30 minutes ahead of my normal wakey-wakey time) saying ‘Have you seen this … Mr. LaFreniere has given out his cell phone number?’. Neat. This is all good. I am glad. Mr. Brown the Social Studies teacher actually knew some place names from Sri Lanka. I was delighted. [Not many folks in NH know where Sri Lanka is, let alone know of any place names.] This is all good.

Deanna and I, individually and together, spoke with Mikel LaChapell, the Assistant Principal. This is the first time I have really had a chat with him. We had a good discussion about bullying and school safety. he now knows where we are coming from. If Devanee experiences any bullying this time around we will not pussyfoot around. I think everybody kind of knows that.

So, that is where we are at. We were impressed. We were happy. Lets hope we can have an uneventful year at school — though I already know, because of a phone call we got from a prominent Alton businessman this morning, that the fireworks at the Board Meeting will continue. What fun. But, thankfully, none of the issues should impinge on the teachers — other than the ‘Common Core’ tussle, but the school is at ‘Rotate’ for the 2013-2014 school year. So that cannot be changed. [‘Rotate’ is the aeronautical term used by pilots during takeoff. At ‘rotate’ you are committed to the takeoff. You can’t change your mind. You have to get the wheels off the ground even if you are going to be crashing!]
