When You Get A Royalty Cheque For TECHNOLOGY Books You Wrote 17 Years Ago!

by Anura Guruge

This is for a ‘Web Services‘ book I wrote and published in 2003 — 17-years ago!

‘They’, i.e., ‘Elsevier’, paid me a decent advance in 2013. I was happy with JUST that. SMILE.

Wow. I never realized they were selling the e-book for this much. It must be GOOD. SMILE.

So, yes, I know I don’t make any money on my recent books. But, that is OK. I still just SMILE when people think I haven’t made money as an author. SMILE.

This was last year.

If these were NOT technology books it wouldn’t crack me up at all. But, these are books that are now 60% out-of-date! Yes, some of the basic principles will still be the same but a lot of water flows under the bridge over the course of 15-years when it comes to technology.

These books have a ‘Look Inside‘ capability and people can return them. That I am still getting royalties mean that people must still find some value in them. That pleases me. These were good books when I wrote them.

I also got pretty decent advances on each of the books. So, I am pleased. I am smiling.

SMILE.

STILL Cracks Me Up When I Get A Royalty Cheque For TECHNOLOGY Books I Wrote 16 Years Ago!

by Anura Guruge

The statement always come in September and the payment hits the bank at the end of the month.

This year it was 1/4 of what it was last year, BUT it is still enough to guy me a gallon of red wine and I am cool with that.

This was a ‘Web Service’ book I wrote and published in 2003 — 16-years ago!

Happens this time every year. It comes out of the blue.

I am NOT complaining. It is NOT a big check BUT it can keep me in wine for 2-weeks. That is better than a kick-in-the-teeth any day of the week.

The UNREASONABLE $100 Million, Per Check, Limit Set By The U.S. IRS.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read. In the U.S. IRS Form 1040 Instructions. Page 75. Look it up. I could NOT believe it. How inconsiderate and arbitrary.

I am sure that some of you, no doubt, were very familiar with this arbitrary restriction and have found ways to work around it.

It was NEW to I. Never seen it or heard about it before.

Wow. I am gobsmacked. So, inconsiderate. What is the big deal? $100 million, $200 million a $1 billion. Just accept the check and move on,

Not cool. Not funny. I am going to complain to Drump. He must have run into this, often.

A Kick, Indeed, To Get Unexpected Royalty Cheque For TECHNOLOGY Books I Wrote 13 – 15 Years Ago!

by Anura Guruge

Of course, if it was NOT technology, this would, indeed, not in any way be incongruous.

What to I, is crazy, is that these are books on technology — fast-changing, Web-technology at that. While the fundamentals might just about still be in place, much would have changed in the last decade. But, people keep on buying my 5 technology books — albeit NOT in any large numbers.

While I do find it amusing it is also gratifying — not the money BUT the fact that people still put some stock into what I wrote that long ago — on technology. Yes, I do know that I did my best to make technology understandable. That was why I was able to do this for 35-years.

These cheques are always a surprise. Makes my day. I got paid advances for both these books — actually for all 5 of my technology books. They were decent advances for niche technology books. So, I am quids in on these books. That is nice.

Now, I should pre-order a Garmin Vivoactive 3 … {Smile}

If You Are Waiting For A Tax Refund From The State Of New Hampshire State Best To Call After 3 Months.

by Anura Guruge

nhdeptofrevenuedsfsf

‘They’ have up to 3 YEARS to send you a refund check.

Yes, you read that correct. 3 YEARS!

After 3 months they start paying you interest (though it can’t be much). However, due to this interest payment, to save the State money, they process refunds starting with the HIGHEST AMOUNTS owed. So if you refund is for ‘peanuts’ you could be waiting a long time.

All refunds have to be MANUALLY checked and authorized.

If your return was not electronic there will also be the delay while the forms are scanned and entered into the system.

But, the GOOD NEWS.

After waiting OVER 3 months call 603-230-5920.

At least in my case, when I called earlier today, ‘she’ could NOT have been more helpful. Absolutely delightful — from the getgo. She even called me back 20 minutes later to say that she had my refund approved and that I should get a check in 2 to 3 weeks! Wow. But, that is NH State. On the whole very helpful and alway cognizant that they are there to help us.

So, IF you are waiting for a refund, wait 96 days then call 603-230-5920. IF you are lucky you might get the same lady I did. I won’t tell you her name. That would not be fair.

Why Don’t They Teach Our Kids “Proof by Nine” As A Part Of Math?

by Anura Guruge

“Proof by Nine” (I have always called it (possibly incorrectly) “Proof of Nine”) is a clever and totally foolproof way to check your multiplication — without having to rely on a calculator or an electronic device. I was taught it, in Ceylon, at school, probably when I was around 6 or 7, as an integral part of learning to do multiplication. We are talking the early 1960s. We did NOT, especially in Ceylon, have calculators or for that matter even slide rules. So “Proof of Nine” was the ONLY way we had — and even our teachers — of checking the correctness of multiplication.

The 3rd image below (albeit purely scanned) in its first paragraph spells out EVERYTHING as it pertained to I. I would do “Proof of Nine”, by rote, as soon as I did a multiplication by hand. I still do it TODAY, for the fun of it. I have tried to teach the kids but they don’t fully grasp it.

The two articles I show here try to explain it very well. I did this diagram to show you the basic mechanics AND I KNOW that most of you are going to say that it is totally confusing.

Shame that they don’t teach it in school. Because all of us would know how to do it.

PLEASE look it up. It is very neat and awfully handy if you don’t have any other means to check a multiplication.

prrofby9anuMy diagram. So I want to check whether 7826 x 43 = 336518.

I start by drawing the slanted ‘X’. The I come up with the two vertical numbers, in this case 5 & 7. I do that by repeatedly adding the digits until I have but one digit. I ALWAYS throw out any 9 I encounter — and even digits that together add up to nine.

I multiply 5 x 7. That is 35. Add the digits. 8.

I add up the digits in 336518. I notice two obvious pairings that come to 9. 3+6 & 1+8. I throw those out. Actually it will still work IF I didn’t throw them out! All comes out in the wash. Well it adds up to 8.

The same ‘8’ I got when I multiplied 5×7 and got 35. The two ‘8’s match. The multiplication was RIGHT.

Handmade, Welded Metal 18″ Lobster Wall Hanging From Maine.

by Anura Guruge

We bought one of these handmade lobsters when we went to Rockland, Maine on Sunday. Actually buying this lobster was one of the reasons for that quick, day visit. They are made by Deanna’s great-nephew, who is a professional welder. He makes them to order. Each one, as such, is slightly different. It is cute. Deanna, a lobsterman’s daughter, likes to have lobster memorabilia around.

IF you would like one too we can order it for you. $300 + shipping (at cost). You can pay by PayPal or by check. Just e-mail me (my e-mail is on the sidebar).

Temporarily storing some of your luggage while you sightsee in New York City can be a bigger problem than you would typically expect. It all has to do with heightened security. Luggage lockers in New York City are basically a thing of the past.

Yes, of course, if you have a hotel reservation it is not a problem. You can check in the luggage at the hotel — even if it means going out of the way to first get to the hotel.

Penn_Station_concourse

Main floor on Penn Station.

Well we had a different problem when we went to NYC, on our way to Philadelphia in May, to pick up the Jaguar XJ8 from “Car Cheer“. Thanks to the antics of Brandon ‘bloody’ Bostian we could go all the way to Philly by Amtrak. We could only get as far as NYC — and then take a Greyhound. Well the kids wanted to do a bit of exploring in NYC, since it was 4 years since we were last there, so I got the Greyhound tickets to give us 6 hours in NYC. We didn’t have much luggage BUT we did have one big bag for the three of us. I did not fancy lugging that around New York, in the hot humidity of a May day. Deanna was sure that there were lockers. I knew better.

Trying to get or find a definite answer as to whether Amtrak provided a baggage check at Penn Station was HARD. It appears that it is security again. People just don’t want to talk about it. YES, I found one commercial service, outside of Penn and not that far from the Port Authority (from which Greyhound departs) which did what I wanted for $10+ an item. Bit its biggest drawback was that it really was neither HERE-or-THERE; i.e., it wasn’t at Penn or at the Port Authority. I persevered. I was sure that Amtrak MUST offer some kind of baggage check. Then I was told that it was ONLY for outbound passengers — and I did NOT have a outbound ticket. I was coming as far as Penn with Amtrak and then doing the rest by road.

Well here is the good news. Amtrak has a very competent, affordable (I think $6.25 a piece) baggage check on the ‘Main Floor’ of Penn Station. You can use it both INBOUND and outbound. All you need is a valid Amtrak ticket for THAT day. They staple your baggage tickets to THAT ticket. That is there security measure. Worked great. I gather that it can get busy and they suggest you get there with 30 minutes to spare. On the Saturday afternoon we were there it was ’empty’. When we came to pick up our bags there was no line.

It really worked well. We had to ask a few people BEFORE we found it. But it is well SIGNED if you look for the signs.

The folks that worked there agreed that it was NYC best kept secret. That is why I am sharing it with YOU.

So if you are going to New York City by Amtrak do remember that they do have a GOOD baggage check facility.
