My Current Total Immersion In ‘Radioactivity’.

by Anura Guruge

Despite my age, I am still fascinated & intrigued by many aspects of science. Stuff I didn’t get a chance to pursue when I was busy with my career. Now that I have a bit more time I kind of feel that I should make up for lost time.

In a way, again given my age, I grew up in the ‘Space & Nuclear’ AGE. Exciting times. True ‘Chernobyl‘ happened much later BUT I remember the news of the various atomic bomb tests in the 1950s & 1960s.

I am no stranger to the ‘Manhattan Project’. Over the years I have read a few books on the subject & had some familiarity with Oppenheimer & Groves. But, the book I am listening to is giving me a ton more insights & perspectives. Some of it was kind of ‘dry’ BUT it, understandably, got more gripping as the bombs came to fruition.

The Chernobyl book has proved to be an absolute PAGE TURNER. I know the story & the ending BUT reading the details.

I will definitely recommend BOTH. No question. Enjoy.

“Radioactive” (2019) ‘Marie Curie’ Movie On Amazon Prime — Good, Quite Good BUT Not That Radiant.

YouTube trailer

I hadn’t fully realized it, but one way or another I appear to have a fairly decent idea about Marie Curie’s life. That meant that I was familiar with about 50% of what was in this movie. That was the ONLY reason that it did NOT enthrall me more. I just knew the story.

BUT, if you are not familiar with her marvelous story you will enjoy it MUCH MORE.

Well made. They even include little snippets to educate you on the deep science. That was cute.

They also include clips of nuclear events that happened well after her death — including the ‘Chernobyl‘ accident from 1989. One of the clips included a 1961 US nuclear test blast in Nevada. I guess I had forgotten about that. I was 8 & living in Ceylon.

But, GOOD movie. Definitely worth watching. I enjoyed it. So, I do recommend it. Enjoy. SMILE.

Quite the lady in so many different respects. SMILE.

WATCH HBO ‘Chernobyl’ (2019) Miniseries — To Recognize The Dangers Of A ‘State’ That Lies.

by Anura Guruge

Click for Amazon Prime listing.

Watch the trailer on YouTube.

I, of course, had heard it was good. But, I had no idea that it was this good. A trusted friend told me to watch it last week. I listen to him. He is very smart. I am glad I did.

Of course, I knew the basic parameters of the story. Like many of you, I too lived through it — but from afar.

Interesting miniseries.

Though couched as a drama, which, of course, it is — what it really is, is a MORAL TALE.

It sets out to show the dangers of a State (in this case the Soviet Union) that lies.

It has some GREAT lines about the true cost of lying.

One of them, paraphrase because I didn’t get it all is along the lines of: ‘Every lie incurs a debt of truth, and that debt has to be repaid some day‘! WOW.

Great story for NOW — with the COVID-19 upon us.

I watched all 5 episodes in 2.5-days — it is that good (and it isn’t like I spend much time watching TV). What this, however, means is that you can watch it all, easily, on a 7-day HBO FREE trial. SMILE. I did so via Amazon Prime.

But, please try and watch it.
