‘Mighty Spark’: Buy A Meal, DONATE A Meal Program — But, Can’t We Do Better Than This.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access their Homepage.

Click to ENLARGE. I had this last night and it was GOOD. Try it.

I happened to see these (i.e., ‘ChickenSouthwest-Style) at our local ‘Hannafords‘ yesterday and could NOT resist getting them when I read:

Every Pack Purchased = A Donated Meal

I am well aware of world hunger and poverty and it bothers me much and on a near daily basis. So, this was an easy (near effortless) way to ausage my constant guild.

I THANK & APPLAUD ‘Mighty Spark‘. Way to GO. Definitely a step in the right direction.

But, I could not help thinking … couldn’t we do MORE.

Couldn’t, shouldn’t, other food producers have a similar program.

Maye ALL companies that sell food should COMMIT to parting with x% of their revenue to feed the hungry. And YES, they will jack up their prices (which, alas, is a cost we should stomach).

Just got me thinking.

I love the ‘Mighty Spark’ idea.

But, it is ONLY a start. We need to do MORE.

What do YOU think?

“Shake Shack” Adds Chicken To The Menu With “Chick’n Shack” — Yes, Yes, Yes.

by Anura Guruge

chickenshak

Though I have only, as yet, managed to eat at a ‘Shake Shack‘ once, and that was a couple of weeks ago when we were in New York, I have been shareholder of the ‘SHAK‘ since more or less the IPO — and today, as I heard on CNBC, with SHAK the bell ringers for the market open, was the one year anniversary. With the stock in the dumps (even more so than others) I am all in favor of anything to further improve the financials though to be fair the financials are not bad and from what we saw, the restaurants are mobbed.

I am in SHAK for the long haul. I am now writing options against the shares and that alone is beneficial. But adding chicken to go with the vegetarian ‘Shroom Burger is good. Love it. Can’t wait to go again.

I am happy.

This BBQ kind of dovetailed very nicely with the 2015 “Alton Bay Babershop Jamboree“. Many of those in Alton for the Jamboree drifted over for the BBQ — as did we. It was good. Half a chicken each for the adults with baked potato, bread, corn, ice cream and drinks. Good deal. We had fun.

I had expected that we would be serenaded by Babershop quartets. No such luck. But we had some good conversations with some Babershop aficionados, from Cape Cod, who had come to the Alton Jamboree, on a regular basis, in the ol’ days.

I don’t, thanks to the now disproven old chestnut that eggs make your cholestrol worse, eat that many eggs anymore. When I was young I ate enough to last a few lifetimes (and her the old theory my life was to be severely curtailed BECAUSE I ate so many eggs). These days, per my low-carb diet, I eat 2 eggs every 4th day. So in a given week I only eat 2 weeks (unless I am travelling and eating breakfast every morning). Given that I also do not no longer eat cakes, pies, muffins, donuts, bagels etc, I don’t ingest too much eggs in prepared food.

Major contrast to when my adoptive mother was alive (and her 84th birthday will be in 3 days time). She used eggs in her fancy cakes, puddings and custards like there was no tomorrow. People loved her sweets. But given that she was very much an International figure and dealt with people from around the world, from Heads of State to beggars, her use of eggs in her sweets would, quite frequently, cause those of us in the KNOW to raise our eyebrows — and in my case, even question her. She, having lived in India for 4 years, entertained many Indian VIPs over the years — even when she lived in Paris. Many of these Indian VIPs claimed to be strict vegetarians or even vegans. Some of them would not eat eggs. But this did NOT stop them from eating my mother’s, and we have to admit they were irresistible, cakes and desserts. She was world famous for her ‘Pineapple Fluff‘ — that really did melt in your mouth. Vegetarians would ask for seconds, thirds and sometimes fourths of her ‘Pineapple Fluff’ when they came for dinner. And my mother would gladly and proudly give them as much as they wanted. One of these Indians who LOVED my mother’s sweets was a delightful Professor from New Delhi. Way, way up in the government echelons. We had known him for years. I called him uncle. STRICT vegetarian. Would not eat eggs. But was even MORE PARTIAL to my mother’s many sweets than even I was and that was saying something. Once he was visiting Paris and, of course, coming over for dinner. So my mother made sure she made him a ‘Pineapple Fluff’. The ‘Fluff’ part was dependent on whisked egg whites. More the merrier. This time she used 12 eggs for that ONE Fluff. That evening between us, with I and the Indian VIP in the lead, we finished the Fluff. 12 eggs gone. After he left, we got talking. Whether he realized or not he had ingested a fair number of eggs. It was one of those cases of “don’t tell, don’t ask” when it came to food.

Anywho …

I don’t eat that many eggs anymore. I even have containers of Market Basket Egg Substitute in the fridge, though I don’t use that much either.

The kids, especially Devanee, eat a fair amount of eggs. Plus Deanna and the kids need it for all their baking.

So it is not unusual for us to have 2, 3 sometimes 4 one-dozen containers of eggs in our fridge. We have a special place where they get stacked, one container on top of the other.

On Monday we went shopping at Market Basket — after my appointment at the Social Security Administration (SSA) office in Concord. Deanna asked me to go get some eggs. I went to do so. I, by habit, don’t buy anything without checking the price. I was surprised at the prices I saw. There were eggs at over $3 a dozen! Just a fortnight ago, I am sure, I had got a dozen eggs for around $1.89.

Later on that day we had to go to both Hannaford and Fiddleheads in Alton. I checked egg prices. A couple of years ago, when Fiddleheads in Alton was ‘new’, their featured product was a dozen of large white eggs for 99 cents. Then it went up to $1.50. This week it was close to $3.00. The cheapest I saw was around $2.85 at Hannaford.eggcups

I kind of had an idea as to what this was all about. When I came home I checked. Yes, Avian flu. Prices will continue to go up. So a HEADS UP. This will also impact prices at restaurants and that for prepared food. Keep an eye out.

hypoth4Thank YOU. Thank YOu. Thank You.

Hand sanitizers are back again — at all entrances. Art, YOU rock. Thanks.

But, Market Basket, Fort Eddy, around noon today, was FRIGID. Bbbrrrrr … rrr cold. Deanna went and stood in front of the rotisserie chicken display to get warm! She heard others complaining that it was cold.

I, with my year round tan, am NOTED for being warm blooded. I am the guy that goes running in 5°F weather. I shovel, sometimes up to 3 hours a day, in sweats. I don’t usually complain about the cold.

But, Market Basket today was FRIGID. I can’t make any jokes about ‘it was so frigid, that when it opened … mouth … light came on’ — because the store, as ever, was well lit.

I complained to ‘Tom‘ — who was wearing a badge that said he had worked for MB for 43 years. He must have started when he was 6! I thought we had child labor laws. But, that is neither here nor there.

Je_suis_frigide...pourquoiIt was FRIGID.

He, I mean Tom, who has been there for 43 years, knew. He said that they have a new computer system and that some of the sensors were faulty.

Art, PLEASE fix them.

Not sure about YOU, Art, and yes, I know what they say about Greek women, BUT I am not partial to frigidity. Please fix the sensors. Luckily I do not plan to be there for a few weeks. But next time I go I am taking half a dozen think sweaters with me to be on the safe side.

I am a real ‘Guruge’ child. I love McDonald’s burgers.

I like cake too, specially birthday cake when it is made for ME. This cake is making me smack my lips.

I’ve done this before. I know what is coming.

I can be such a good girl. If I do my best pose can I get another burger, please?

We got him, as a rescue, on September 28, 2013. He was 10 or 11 weeks old at the time. They didn’t know when he was born. So Deanna decided to make ‘July 20’ his ‘official’ birthday — that being her now deceased father’s birthday. So, Braxton, a joyfully playful beagle, as mischievous as they come, is one year old today.

Teischan made him a birthday cake and later today, per the family custom, he and Maya will go to McDonald’s for a burger each. That, for the last 7 years, has been a family tradition. The dogs go to McDonald’s for burgers on their birthday. Did it with Ulysses, then Maya and now Braxton. Yes, we take them to McDonald’s when it is not there birthday also because they like their burgers. Maya knows McDonald’s. As soon as we pull in she sits up and waits for me to come back with the burgers. Braxton has yet to figure it out — but he is young.

He is about 3 times as big as when we got him. I, purposefully, feed him slightly more than what he should get. He actually now eats MORE than Maya! But, that is OK. He loves his food and gets MORE exercise than most dogs. He runs at least 2.5 miles with me 5 to 6 times a day, in addition to all his other walks, romps around the yard and playing in the house. He is a very healthy and happy dog. Such a ‘little boy’ — though he is fixed. A bundle of joy.

He is the first beagle I have ever had. I am a ‘Golden’ person. I have had Goldens, with no interruption, since 1988. I really didn’t know anything about beagles until we brought Benny/Braxton home. Then we started hearing and reading about the horror stories. How they take off, how they howl etc. etc. The running away is NOT a problem. He runs, off leash, with me and has been doing so for over 8 months. That Maya runs, off leash, too is, of course, a big factor. But given that I have run with dogs, near daily, for 20 years, I have worked out many things — a key among them being that running as a pack is very IMPRINTING to a dog. It has to be running as opposed to walking. They know the difference. The running is a pack thing.

We are glad we got him. As Deanna loves to tease me he was everything I had always said “I don’t want”. I like my puppies as early as I can get them. Maya was 8 weeks old when we got her and I thought that was old! Braxton was 10 or 11 weeks old. Prior to that anytime somebody mentioned a puppy that was even 9 weeks old, I would say “Nah, too old”. Plus it was a little dog and everybody knows that I like big dogs, the bigger the better. But, Braxton makes my day. Though he will steal food, destroy anything he can get his snout at and generally only does 40% of what we ask him to do, he has this wonderful personality! When we got him, having lived in a crate for much of his life, he was very thin and nervous. Now he is a very confident dog. That makes me happy.

So, happy birthday Braxton, my rascal boy that Deanna spoils like there is no tomorrow and is Teischan’s plaything.

We picked him up in Kittery, Maine, at the ‘Welcome to Maine’ visitor center, off I-95, at noon — as promised and as hoped. No hitches. Very smooth. We were very impressed. Very slick, professional operation. More in a minute.

Sure is a beagle. Paperwork says ‘mixed’ — but they also say they don’t know exact date of birth of breed. I weighed him a few minutes ago (after he had his dinner at 4:30 pm). 5.6 pounds! He is LITTLE. Smallest dog I have ever had. Having had Goldens for 25 years I am not used to such a small dog. But, sure is cute.

Ate his dog food, mixed with warm skim milk. But prefers chicken and cheese. Likes yogurt too. All our dogs get yogurt at night (to match my yogurt eating habit, though I eat Greek, plain, low-fat). He will get chicken and cheese.

So here is the first set of pictures. Suffice to say all are delighted. Deanna will probably be taking 50 pictures a day.

Click on any of the pictures to ENLARGE them.

I found him on ‘Adopt-a-Pet‘ (via Petfinder) online, as I posted here, and spent 36 hours making sure I got him.

The NH contact and ‘Foster Home’ was Janice Berry, in Rochester. She was very good. Yes, I pestered her near daily, including this morning at 10:30, to make sure the puppy would arrive today. We highly recommend her. Phone number: 603-332-2965.

The actual agency appears to be ‘Butler County Animal Shelter’ in Kentucky.

The delivery operation by bus was very smooth. Very impressed.

This was so good that I am already talking about getting another one!

Some pictures of the dog drop off this noon in Kittery, Maine.

The ladies that drive the delivery bus take pictures of each puppy as it is handed over and then posts it on their Facebook page (quite quickly). Very impressive.

This is the picture they took of us.

>> Day at ‘Story Land’ … — Aug. 16, 2013.

subwaysaladMy very low-carb diet, that I have been on since January 24, 2013, and have lost 22(+) pounds in the process, does restrict my dining choices since I am loath to cheat — given that I take to dieting earnestly.

pulledporkSo when we departed ‘Story Land‘ at around 6:40 pm on Friday, after another very fun day, I was keeping an eye out for where we could eat, also bearing in mind that Teischan typically prefers fast food. As we got to scenic, iconic Intervale I happened to spot a Subway sign across the road from the popular ‘Cathedral Ledge‘ overview. I don’t think I had noticed it before, but then again I had not driven through Intervale looking for somewhere to eat. We all like Subway. When I was not on my diet I would happily devour a footlong chicken sandwich in a matter of minutes and still be looking for more. But of late it has been their chopped salads. Prior to Friday we had stopped at different Subways twice in the last 6 weeks — I once even having the plain vegetarian.

On Friday, when we stopped, I saw their promotion for Applewood Pulled Pork. I am a sucker for pork and am quite partial to pulled pork. So I was kind of bummed that I couldn’t have a footlong. Deanna and Teischan had Turkey variants. Then it was my turn. I asked for a chopped salad (as opposed to an un-chopped whole salad). I then asked whether I can have the pulled pork with it. Must say that the young girl who was single handedly running the place, including baking bread, while we were ordering was very helpful and thorough. She said that I can have any meat they have and as such pulled pork was certainly an option. So I had a pulled pork chopped salad with barbeque dressing (at their recommendation). It was yummy. Wasn’t cheap. Chopped salads are more expensive than a footlong confirming the adage that it is not cheap to eat healthy. But it was worth it.

I totally recommend it. Plus you feel so righteous.

Moreover, that Intervale location was an absolute treasure. They had clean picnic tables outside. So you get to eat overlooking THE Intervale million dollar view. What more can you ask for? We were delighted. And to add icing to the cake there is a cute, decently priced ice cream place next door. So Teischan got a kiddie swirl — which Mum helped her finish. So if you are in the North Conway area and looking for some healthy, fast food with a view checkout this Subway at Intervale.

Next to the ice cream place is a HUGE convenience store with a flea market section in the back. They had some interesting stuff. So this was a worthwhile stop.
