Cherries, To My Delight, Are Back At My Supermarket After A 6- Or 7-Month Hiatus.

by Anura Guruge

Until October or November last year I had not realized that fresh Cherries, at least in New Hampshire, are seasonal, i.e., only available during the Summer months. Wow. I had kind of fallen into the belief that all common fruits, these days, were available year round due to ‘cheap’ air transport. I knew that we got fruits, vegetables & flowers, on a regular basis, from Chile, Peru, Greece & Israel.

Appears that this not the case when it comes to cherries. Cherries we get in New Hampshire are from California & they are only available during ‘Summer’. Well now I know. I am going to eat as much as I can over the next few months.

The Blueberry Crisis In New Hampshire.

by Anura Guruge

No. Nope — there is no shortage per se. Actually we are in the midst of a global GLUT of blueberries. Chile, Canada, Mexico and Peru are POURING in ‘cheap’ blueberries into the U.S.

This has resulted in blueberry prices going down since 2017. Good for the consumer.

Not good for growers, especially those in New England — New Hampshire, of course, among those hit. Plus, in New England it is wild blueberries, that grow close to the ground, as opposed to the ‘Highbush’ grown further down. Highbush is called cultivated. Wild blueberries have more antioxidants, tend to be bluer and tastier. But, they are hard to pick. That adds to their cost.

I live on the side of a hill — and in reality it should be called ‘Blueberry Hill’. We have three large wild blueberry farms on it. I run/walk by them most days.

Last year I heard rumblings that the owners of these farms were not happy. They were not making the kind of money they were used to. I then heard that a Maine company that ran one of the farms, on behalf of the owner, had pulled out. It was not economical to run the farm!

Yesterday, on my walk, I got to talk to one of the owners. He told me that the issue was the prices: ‘way down’. They are basically at break even and their cost is lower than mosts and they also sell at local farm markets where they can get retail as opposed to wholesale pricing. He was not happy. He reckons that Canada is dumping blueberries into the U.S. market.

Not good. I like having these farms around. They bring in bees to pollinate the plants. Watching that is fun.

So, this is a heads up since many people don’t appreciate what is happening. All they notice is that blueberries are plentiful at the supermarkets and that they are at a good price.

But, this, alas, is at the expense of New England farmers.

Poor Cincinnati Zoo Gorilla, ‘Harambe’, Could Have Been Tasered.

by Anura Guruge

A taser could have worked.

IF any of the bloody zookeepers were brave enough to get close enough.

That was the problem.

Sheer, Utter COWARDICE of the zookeepers.

If you can taser a moose you can taser a 400 pound gorilla.

There were other options.

Problem was that the pathetic zookeepers were too scared
to go into the enclosure to get close enough.

COWARDS.

Cincinnati Zoo Keepers — Bunch Of Pathetic, Snivelling COWARDS!

by Anura Guruge

If I were a zoo keeper who worked with these great apes on a daily basis I would have gone inside that enclosure in an heatbeat to intervene in someway. Anybody who knows me would not doubt that. I would have gone in unarmed if there were no other options. IF a taser had been available I would have gone as close as was needed to use it.

Bloody Cowards.

All of them. Zoo Director Thane Maynard should resign, right now.

So why was a taser not used?

This was beyond the bloody pale. A magnificent, INNOCENT silverback gorilla shot dead when there had to have been other options.

This is it. I have had it. The shootings of the lions in Chile was bad enough … BUT this in supposedly enlightened and civilized U.S. of A. I have had it. I am going to join the anti-zoo brigade, It is time we stop killing innocent animals, in zoos, for no fault of theirs.

Boycott bloody Cincinnati Zoo. This was inexcusable.

Chile: Shooting Two INNOCENT Zoo Lions Because Of A Crazy Guy Is Indefensible!

by Anura Guruge

The lions did NO wrong. They should NOT have been shot.

This is why Chile will continue to be regarded as a country that is unenlightened. Last month a female zookeeper in Florida was killed by a tiger. The tiger was NOT put down.

This idiot jumped into the enclosure. He wanted to commit suicide. They should have shot him rather than the lions! That is what HE wanted … right? Don’t shoot innocent animals because humans are crazy. They don’t deserve to die. Let’s get this straight. This was not an accident. A man did NOT fall into the enclosure. Yes, IF it was an accident they would have been justified in using tranquilizer darts.

I hope that ALL the zoos around the world join in ostracizing this damn zoo in Santiago. They should not be given any other animals.

This really upset me.

Pope Francis’ Zika-Related Contraception Statement Totally Irrelevant & Meaningless!

Number of things to take into account here:

1/ Conservative Catholic spin-masters will — and already HAVE — construe this to mean contraception via NATURAL MEANS per existing Catholic teaching. Basically avoid SEX! See image below.

2/ Women in Latin American countries, Brazil in particular, have been IGNORING the Church’s birth control edicts for decades — as do U.S./Canadian Catholics. I talked about this 5 years ago. See map below. Brazil & Chile have a current fertility rate of 1.8, while that of Mexico & Argentina is 2.3. Rates such as that indicate that contraception is being effectively utilized.

The Equestrian High Jump Record, At 8.1′, That Has Stood For 64 Years Seems Incongruous To Me.

The record being set in Chile.

I have learned a lot of late by making a point to study Google Doodles.

I saw the above Chilean Colonel Alberto Larraguibel Morales (May 30, 1919 – April 12, 1995) Doodle on February 5, 2013 — the day after they produced a Doodle for Sri Lanka Independence Day.

I had no idea what they were talking about. Though I used to watch equestrian show jumping on TV, as all Brits are expected to do, I wasn’t familiar with the term ‘Puissance’. Maybe I did know it at one point but had forgotten it because I haven’t seen horse jumping on TV in the 29 years I have lived here (this time around).

Google has actually used the WRONG terminology. Puissance involves an upright fence. As you can see from the Doodle, Alberto Larraguibel was jumping over a sloped fence. That is the equestrian high jump competition ad it involves a single, sloping fence — the bottom half is hedge, the top made out of rails. So the Doodle is accurate in that respect.

Larraguibel (who at the time was a captain) broke the record for the the equestrian high jump, on February 5, 1949, at an official international event, in his native Chile.

He was riding quite a famous horse, chestnut stallion named ‘Huaso‘ (née ‘Faithful’).

They cleared, as officially ratified by the relevant sporting body, 8.1 feet (2.47 meters).

To beat the record somebody needs to jump 8.2 feet.

Same record jump, but head on. Does look quite high to me.

I like horses. Always have. I have done a very small amount of riding. I have watched Devanee taking riding lessons. But, I don’t know much about horses.

That height surprised me. 8.1′ Didn’t seem that high. I commented about this to Deanna.

Yes, I know the horse has a person, weighing at least 120 pounds, sitting on them — and I know the difference that 6 pounds make when I strap on my wrist weights to slog up Prospect Mountain Road.

Tonight I had some time. So I did what I had been meaning to do.

The World and Olympic records for High Jump. [I was in the ball park in what I had thought they were.]

Want to guess?

Men: …..8.03′ [2.45 m] World (set in 1993) and 7.84′ [2.39] Olympic (set in 1996).

Women: 6.86′ [2.09 m] World (set in 1987) and 6.76′ [2.06] Olympic (set in 2004).

So, the horse record is less than an 1″ different from the men’s high jump — obviously without the 120(+) burden.

Seems incongruous to me — especially since the horse record has stood for 64 years, one of the longest standing records in sports.
