Learnt about the LaconiaFriendly’s” closing from the “Daily Sun”. Was quite surprised. Always appeared to do a decent business. We had eaten there earlier this year.

I have no problems with “Friendly’s“. I actually quite like their menu. For 5 – 6 years “Friendly’s” was Teischan’s unconditional favorite. Only place she wanted to eat. Only place she wanted to have her birthdays. I know we had at least 3 birthdays for her at “Friendly’s”. Then, suddenly, this year she decided that “Friendly’s” was not hygenic enough for her! She is beyond fussy. If she sees a dirty glass … that is it. Kiss of death. She will not eat there again. So, we haven’t been to “Friendly’s” in 4 to 5 months. But, I am sure that it is not the lack of our patronage that is causing them to close down all these restaurants.

I read that they now only have one “Friendly’s” in Maine … one in Cape Cod. Those, to I, appear to be prime markets to “Friendly’s”.

Shame. Good place for kids. Decent food. Reasonable prices.

‘Durgin Park’, Boston — Last Day, Last Meal, January 12, 2019 — Yes, We Were THERE!

by Anura Guruge

The usual benu (being sold as a souvenir for $5) and the photocopied menu used today.

Yes, we were there and it was SPECIAL. Glad I made an effort to get down to ‘Quincy Market‘ for the DAY. Yes, it was poignant too. There are folks losing JOBS! The kind of elderly (i.e., MY AGE) waitress who served us, with aplomb, ‘Allison’, had been there for 20-years. She wasn’t too happy. I took care of her with my TIP. {Smile} And she smiled too when she saw it. There were hugs all over the place.

We got there early. It was likely to get MOBBED later in the day. We heard from folks that THEY (i.e., Durgin Park) ran out of food at 5pm last Sunday!

I knew they opened at 11:30am. So, I planned to be there for that. I expected a LINE and there was one, BUT it wasn’t as long as I had expected.

We left home at 8am! It was bitterly cold. We parked at the BostonMuseum of Science‘ (where we get discounted parking because we are members) by 9:40am. We took the MBTA to ‘Quincy Market’. We were there by around 10:15am. There was NO LINE. So, we ‘did’ the ‘Market’. ‘Faneuil Hall‘ was closed because of Trump’s Shutdown.

By 11am there was a line forming. We joined it at 11:15am. There were about 30 people ahead of us. Around 11:25 they opened the doors. They felt sorry for us. IT WAS COLD. They let 50 folks in. We were in that batch. The kitchen was not as yet open but you could start with drinks.

It was GOOD. Great atmosphere. Everybody was reminiscing.

It was WAY TOO early for I. I don’t normally have my first meal of the day till 1:40pm. So, I just ordered a few appetizers and even then we brought much of it home. But, no matter. What counted was that we were THERE.

I was never a regular patron. So, I can’t claim to have a special relationship with ‘Durgin Park’. But, I did go there, for dinner, for the first time 32-years ago. September 1986. I remember that. I have eaten there AT LEAST 10-times. Most likely more. So, I am not a total stranger either.

Well … another bit of history gone. But, I can say, with PRIDE, that I was THERE.

Flag flying upside down in the wind! Symbolic.

I stumbled upon this sad news accidently. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Had to Google it myself.

Wow. Talk about the sad end to a legendary property. A true part of Boston’s colorful history.

I first went to ‘Durgin Park‘ 32-years ago, in September of 1986. I am sure I was told that it was Boston’s OLDEST restaurant. Well, they have modified that claim.

I am surprised that they are struggling. They always looked full. Yes, I haven’t eaten there in some years. I confess to that.

It was such a fun place. Great atmosphere.

I am sad. I can’t believe that they couldn’t have kept it going.

Oh, dear.

THE Circus. Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey, Coming To Manchester, NH, For The Very Last Time This Friday.

This is going to be SAD.

Yes, of course, we have tickets. {SMILE}

We have been going to this circus, in Manchester, without fail, for the last 7 or 8 years. It was a cherished annual ritual.

I will miss it. It was always fun. Often quite the spectacle.

Yes, we noticed that the audience size kept on shrinking. I worried that they would stop coming to New Hampshire. Never expected them to close shop altogether. Ironically there has been a RUN on the tickets for this last appearance. Typical.

I suspect ‘they’ will be back, in a few years, under another name with a scaled-down operation.

Of course I will let you know how it was.

This is a CRYING SHAME.

I like the Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus. We have been going to their Manchester, NH, performance, each year, without fail, for the last 7 or 8 years. Maybe more.

We were at the Sunday, May 8, 2016 performance. That could very well have been the last performance in New Hampshire.

This is a shame.

I am going to try and get in ONE LAST SHOW before they close. They are supposed to come to Manchester, April 21 to 23, 2017. We will have to go to that, IF that is still on.

I had worried for a few years that they would stop coming to Manchester because attendance was so low. Never thought it would come to this.

So now we have ‘Cirque du Soleil’ and the ‘Big Apple‘. Though we love ‘Cirque’ it is not your old-fashioned, traditional circus and the ‘Big Apple’ no longer comes to New Hampshire.

This is a SHAME.

Crossed my mind as I was watching the breaking news. We don’t know the details BUT if it was in any way ‘immigration-related’ it could have an impact on the Brexit referendum.

Food for thought.

Polls don’t close till 10pm London (GMT) time (today).

This is stupid and spiteful.

NASA could have kept its public Website up
during the Government Shutdown.

This is yet another example of the petulant behavior by petty government officials akin to closing down the open-air, free-to-all WW II memorial in D.C.

Yes, I fully understand that they might not have the resources to keep the homepage of the NASA public Website updated — though I again iterate, the buggers are going to get back pay, so why aren’t they back at work?

This is beyond the pale.

The clown in charge of NASA and the one who ordered the Website to be taken down. He should be fired.

This is the clown in charge of NASA right now — Charles Bolden, and I do NOT see anything bold in his action. Just plain cowardice and bratishness. He should be ashamed of himself. He should be supporting the President. But, then again he seems to be way, way out of his depth. He should be fired along with the other scam-artist, Bryan Sivak, who is responsible for the crippled healthcare.gov JOKE.

Just last week, as reported here, NASA, yet again, screwed up, BIG TIME, and wasted $11 million dollars of taxpayer money trying to send up a simple weather balloon (BRRISON) to snap some pictures of my comet, Comet ISON, C/2012 S1 (ISON). They couldn’t get the telescope to unlatch. This was NOT rocket science. This was a helium weather balloon. $11 million. Wonder how many pockets got lined with that money. I could have successfully achieved that mission for under $800,000. But, then again, I am competent and have always been.

As we know NASA’s Website gets regularly hacked, because competence is not really a requirement to work at NASA. It was hacked just 3 weeks ago. Now we don’t even have a hacked site. Nothing. Deep empty space — probably just like the inside of Bolden’s balding head.

Given that I, on principle, abhor human suffering, of any sort, I was always in favor of the Government workers getting back pay — as was the case with the last shutdown 17 years ago.

I can’t imagine what it would be like not to get the back pay. It would devastate families. So, I am relieved and happy about the back pay, though as a political junkie I am well aware that neither the Senate or soon-to-be-impeached Obama has approved it. But, it will happen.

So, I yet again ask the most fundamental of question.

Given that they will receive BACK pay, why aren’t they BACK at work?

No work, no pay. I understand that too.

Back Pay, Back to work. That is the American way.

So what is the deal here?

This is such a farce. Plus, to my esteemed friends in the Tea Party — what are you saving now, other than your face and privates?

Back pay coupled with all the loss in productivity will cost the country more than if the Government was kept open.

The ONLY thing that deserved to be closed and it did that all on its own because of the fraud perpetrated by Obama brown noser Bryan Sivak was Healthcare.gov. That isn’t a joke. That system is a billion dollar FRAUD on the U.S. taxpayers.

Science Museum At Manchester, NH Was Anticlimactic and Disappointing.

It was school vacation for Teischan this week and as we had gone to Boston just last week, we decided to stay local. We heard about the robotic dinosaur exhibit at the adjacent Millyard Museum (when we were at our wonderful optometrist, Dr. Eakin, on Tuesday) and decided to make an afternoon/evening at the Science Center. We had a bunch of things to do in Manchester, including having a leisurely lunch at our favorite ‘Red Arrow‘. We got to the museum around 3:40 pm expecting to stay there till about 6:30 — and then go for dinner. As we were parking Devanee saw a sign that said that it closes at 4 pm. I didn’t believe that. We went in. Both the exhibit and the museum do indeed close each weekday at 4 pm. That is ludicrous. The Boston ‘Museum of Science‘ stays open till 9pm.

4pm, daily, for a museum is so, so provincial. So country bumpkinish. I couldn’t believe it. In Manchester. It is another sad joke.

I was disgusted. And that is it. Not going back there again. Wasn’t very impressed any way. To say it was small is an understatement.

I am a Granite State Ambassador (GSA). I really am interested in enhancing NH’s tourist worth. Stuff like this just doesn’t help.

Maybe Gunstock Inn, Gilford Is Still For Sale. We Were Told It Was Sold. Transfer In November.

To be fair we heard about it in a roundabout, but still perfectly valid, way. Deanna and the kids were supposed to be attending yet another pool party birthday celebration there this month. Then Deanna got an e-mail saying that it had to be rescheduled because the Inn had been sold and the closing date for the sale corresponded with the day for the party — and that the Inn was going to be closed that day. That was what we heard. I noticed today that there appears to be a lot of ‘interest’ in the Inn. So I too did a search this morning and found this. Yes, the price appears to have been lowered. I thought I had seen it around the $725K mark. I don’t know. My interest is cursory at best.

Click to ENLARGE. I won’t say where I found it or provide a link because I am not sure whether the realtors would want me to give them any free publicity.
