The ‘Polar Vortex’, ‘Arctic Blast’ etc. In New Hampshire — It Is NOT That Cold!

I went running today, viz. Saturday, February 13, 3016, up Prospect Mountain Road, for my usual 2.5 mile (40 – 45 minute) run. It was 16°F, as you can clearly see, when I left.

My cut-off for NOT running is 5°F — on the thermometer (irrespective of wind chill). I watched the WMUR forecast last night and heard all the ‘Polar Vortex’ talk on TV in the morning. But my own self-imposed rules said that I had to give it a try if it was above 5°F.

Yes, I was slightly concerned. Deanna told me not to run. I wore my usual winter running gear, which is not very special — with TWO small additions. I put my neck warmer around my neck just in case (and I did not end up using it) and I literally PUT A SOCK on IT! Way back, 16 – 17 years ago, I had not realized that you can get frostbite on ANY bodily extremity. I thought that certain body parts, below the waist, given their location would be kept warm by all the blood vessels in the groin. NO. I didn’t get frostbite but it was kind of touch and go. Since then I started using an athletic supporter that definitely makes sure that it is warm enough. Today to be doubly sure I put a sock on it under the athletic supporter. Don’t think I needed it.

It really wasn’t that cold. Yes, to be fair there was no wind — a gentle breeze. The trees were not moving. Yes, the wind has picked up since. But from what I can see today isn’t that atypical for us in New Hampshire.

Teischan who has been extremely distressed at the lack of snow this winter excitedly woke us up this morning, at the crack of dawn (i.e., ~8:40 am), to inform us that it has snowed and that there was snow on the ground. I knew that, at best, it could only be a dusting. But she was excited. Well I was NOT going to jump out of bed to check out a bit of snow. IF it was 4′ I might have made an effort to see how much shoveling I would have to do. Instead, while I cajoled Deanna to get me my coffee, I checked the snow from my pad! Technology is amazing. That is also how I check for rain, in the morning, these days to determine whether I can run or not.

Well it made Teischan happy. I went out after my shower — today being a day off from my 6-days a week (barring rain or temperatures BELOW 5°F (-15°C)) run. There was still snow. IT IS COLD. 28°F (-2.25°C)! That was a shock though I still did go out just in sweats without a jacket.

I assume it will all be gone by this afternoon.

60°F (15.5°C) on Christmas Day!

That would indeed be Christmas. I love this ‘Global Warming’. Bring it on.

Keene’s loss was Laconia’s GAIN. And I am delighted. During the 10 years I lived in Gilford I had much dealings in Laconia and I like Laconia. Laconia has never been bad to me. So I am happy that Laconia has another attraction to add to the “Multicultural Day“.

Of course we went. We got there just before 5pm, found a free ‘handicap parking‘ (given that Deanna does have a permanent pass), and was ‘downtown’ by 5:10pm. That was the timing I was aiming for. Wanted to be there as it was getting dark.

Respectable number of people. Yes, it was busy. More people than for “Multicultural Day“, but less than what you would see at the Weirs for “Bikes”.

Well organized. Bravo Laconia. Lots of stalls and Deanna managed to spend a fair amount of time milling around.

It was COLD. Low 40s. Though we were dressed for it, it was still biting. And that was a detraction and distraction. The only time we had been to Keene for their festival, in 2013, it had been much warmer, even at 8pm at night.

There was only one thing missing. Pumpkins. Of course there were pumpkins BUT not that many. In 2013 in Keene, just one ‘block’, had more pumpkins than all of Laconia and there were a lot of blocks in Keene. So I doubt this even came close to a record.

C’est la vie. First year. Lets see how it goes. We were glad we went. I took 142 pictures with my Lumix FZ1000. Deanna and Devanee were also snapping away with their cameras. We went to dinner after that in Belmont. The ‘Hong Kong Buffet’. I was thinking. Two years ago in Keene we had one ‘point-and-shoot’ Panasonic between all of us. How things have changed. I even carried a Monopod with feet!

Did WMUR (Again) Intentionally Mislead Folks About 4th Of July 2015 Weather Forecast In New Hampshire?

All week, leading up to the 2015 4th of July (long) weekend, the WMUR weather forecasters were tripping over themselves to proclaim who perfect it was going to be — hot with lots of sunshine BOTH Saturday (the 4th) and Sunday. Even at 9am Saturday morning they were claiming that it would be a perfect day — while I am looking out of the window seeing lots of clouds.

Well, at least in most parts of New Hampshire, we had a fair amount of clouds, rain (albeit it light) and COLD temperatures for most of Saturday afternoon. Yes, the rain, fortunately, ceased before most of the town firework shows BUT most people had to contend with a not very nice 4th of July afternoon.

Click to hear Judge’s apology, Sunday, July 5, 2015 IF you do NOT believe me.

This morning, on Sunday, Josh Judge, WMUR’s megastar weather forecaster, APOLOGIZED for getting the forecast SO, SO WRONG. Check it out here >>>>

Well, to be honest, I do NOT buy it. WMUR has done it before and I have mixed feelings about it.

As a Lifetime Granite State Ambassador (GSA) I have a vested interested in promoting tourism in New Hampshire. Yes, we need EVERY cent we can get from those from other States.

So I fully understand the motivation to mislead tourists about the weather on KEY holidays. I just worry that in time THEY will cotton on!

I have been watching this for years — with WMUR. To me it has become kind of a joke.

WMUR consistently, across all 4 SEASONS, will dupe folks into believing that we will have good weather during important holidays — whether it be the 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, New Year’s (for skiing) etc.

So I am just giving you a heads up. Just be leary about WMUR weather forecasts when it come to HOLIDAYS.

Market Basket (Concord, N.H. — Fort Eddy) — Art Many THANKS For The Hand Sanitizers, But Store, Today, Was FRIGID!

hypoth4Thank YOU. Thank YOu. Thank You.

Hand sanitizers are back again — at all entrances. Art, YOU rock. Thanks.

But, Market Basket, Fort Eddy, around noon today, was FRIGID. Bbbrrrrr … rrr cold. Deanna went and stood in front of the rotisserie chicken display to get warm! She heard others complaining that it was cold.

I, with my year round tan, am NOTED for being warm blooded. I am the guy that goes running in 5°F weather. I shovel, sometimes up to 3 hours a day, in sweats. I don’t usually complain about the cold.

But, Market Basket today was FRIGID. I can’t make any jokes about ‘it was so frigid, that when it opened … mouth … light came on’ — because the store, as ever, was well lit.

I complained to ‘Tom‘ — who was wearing a badge that said he had worked for MB for 43 years. He must have started when he was 6! I thought we had child labor laws. But, that is neither here nor there.

Je_suis_frigide...pourquoiIt was FRIGID.

He, I mean Tom, who has been there for 43 years, knew. He said that they have a new computer system and that some of the sensors were faulty.

Art, PLEASE fix them.

Not sure about YOU, Art, and yes, I know what they say about Greek women, BUT I am not partial to frigidity. Please fix the sensors. Luckily I do not plan to be there for a few weeks. But next time I go I am taking half a dozen think sweaters with me to be on the safe side.

That is Teischan with Braxton (the Beagle) around 5:45 pm, September 1, 2014 on Halfmoon Lake, N.H. The blob to the far right is Maya, the non-stop swimming Golden. She is swimming to the swim platform — the one I swim to. Click to ENLARGE.

I, for various reasons, hadn’t swum in 10 days. The last two times I had swum, both at our beach on Halfmoon Lake, Alton, N.H., it had been borderline cold.

We went to the beach around 5:30 pm yesterday, Labor Day — which happened to be September 1, 2014. That was a bit early for us, BUT ‘Sept. 1’ is a landmark for us on our beach. As of September 1 until Memorial Day we can take the dogs to the beach whenever; during the ‘Summer’ they can only go after 7pm.

I decided to give the water a try. Given the Biblical deluge that we had had the night before I fully expected the water to be too cold — at least for me. There was nobody out swimming — but that is par for the course ‘that late’ most evenings. Two very young kids playing close to the beach, but that doesn’t count because they don’t feel the cold as much as I do.

But when I ventured in, beyond my knees, I was pleasantly surprised. It was warm! It had actually warmed up since I last swam. Well the day time temps. have been higher we are going to have at least four 80°F days in a row this week.

So just want to let you know that the lakes in Central New Hampshire are still eminently swimmable right now — i.e., first week of September 2014 — even though we may also be talking Fall Foliage.

We are still messing around with the my refurbished Canon EOS Rebel T3i with 18-55mm IS II Lens.
Took these two pictures before we headed for the beach.

I thought I was at least a week behind ‘schedule’ and I was going to ‘blame’ it on us having been away much of last week. But I knew that I had the exact date of last year’s first swim enshrined, for posterity, on this blog.

WOW! I was actually 9 days ahead of last year. I am amazed, but pleased.

In my ‘middle ages’, given that I have lived in N.H.’s Lakes Region since 1991, mid-June used to be my traditional target date to start swimming in ‘the lake’ — the lakes over time having been ‘Shaw’s Pond’ in New Durham, the ‘Big Lake’ in Meredith (1997 – 1999) and Gilford (2000 – 2006) and now ‘Halfmoon’ in Alton since 2007.

Now much older and with considerably less insulation I need the water temps to be higher. Yesterday was tolerable. Maybe even pleasant. I did a decent swim.

I still feel the loss of 2 pounds of buoyancy as a result of losing weight. It is still very noticeable. All I can say is ‘WOW’ … who would have thought. I now make allowances for it.

Well, now that I started swimming I will try and swim, near daily, well into September. I like swimming. So in the Summer it becomes a run up Prospect Mountain in the morning and a swim in the evenings. Works for me.

So Summer is here. Come up and enjoy it folks.

Just struck me as a funny coincidence.

On a MORE serious note, I think that there is deeper message here. I think, with curial changes in the offing, the pope is snubbing these curial heads. That is how it reads to me, and you can’t deny I am pretty adept at reading the Roman chicken entrails.

P.S., I did talk about the Sarah Palin remark in passing here when talking about ‘The Bush‘ wanting to appear Pontifical.
