CommonCorepresentation

This was the ‘Common Core’ presentation that I had requested.

Definitely worth watching. Listen to what she has to say with an open mind.

Alton Central School (ACS), at least for 2013 – 2014, is committed to ‘Common Core‘.

Yesterday for the first time I got to see the ‘new’ “Common Core“, “Singapore Math” books (yes, there are two of them, “A” & “B”) that Alton Central (ACS) is using for 7th Grade Math.

Very nice books, and I wish I had books like this growing up — though I am still confounded as to why there is a crab on the cover.

These books have now been used for a year at ACS and you can see that from the 2nd picture above. I can even tell you the name of the kid who used the book.

Well we plan to use these books for Homeschooling Devanee — hence my particular interest in them. Since I know Devanee very well and given that we have been doing this for awhile now, the first thing I did was to check if the book had ANSWERS at the back. I am quite partial to having answers in the back of Math books because it eliminates the need for me to create an Excel spreadsheet to check Devanee’s answers.

Sure enough the book had ‘Selected Answers’.

But herein lies my problem and puzzlement.

The answers are in tightly bound pages of the book.

OK. This book was used by a student in 2012 and there was even pages of math homework by this kid inside the book.

So, what is the deal here? Is having ready access to the answers a part of the ‘Common Core’ agenda?

Multiple things bother me:

1/ This is an ‘expensive’ textbook meant to be reused. So, how come they did NOT handle the ‘selected answers’ in a BETTER manner, e.g., a supplemental booklet? [These books are supposed to be created by the crème de la crème of International educators, all of them with at least a “Master’s”. They didn’t see this problem? Maybe they should have hired a consultant.]

2/ How come the answers are still in this book if it was used by a student throughout 2012 – 2013? Did they copy (at further costs) all the test pages?

3/ Though I (as somebody with 35 years experience with book publishers) know the ‘pressures’ involved for those that recommend and purchase these textbooks, how come nobody noticed this flaw in these books?

I am not impressed. I am not happy.

I have already worked out a way to prevent Devanee gaining ready access to the answers WITHOUT in anyway putting even a scratch on the book. I might patent my invention for use with ‘Common Core’ books. Yes, I am going to forward this to the Principal at ACS and get some answers — the main one being HOW did they stop kids from looking at the answers when they were doing homework (or didn’t they do homework using this $39.99 (retail) book.

I find it funny (given my admittedly very twisted sense of humor) that most folks in Alton, including the parents, think that the building renovation is the ‘be all and end all‘ of the issues facing the welfare of the Alton kids. Somehow bullying or the ‘Common Core Standards‘ don’t seem to figure in the priorities.

Last night, at the School Board meeting, given that I had requested it at the previous meeting, the Principal did get up and do a brief but poignant presentation on ‘Common Core Standards’.

I was intrigued, but not surprised, when one female school board member (and Carlos Martinez was NOT at the meeting), openly talked about ACS OPTING OUT of CC. Wow.

So, I, when I was finally given permission to ask questions, got up and asked a few questions MAINLY to get as much of the opinions and statements on the official record for possible future use.

As I suspected a prior Board did approve the school’s current ‘program’ with CC. I knew that that had to have happened.

I also questioned whether this board was 100% behind CC and got the response I expected — that yes, some have reservations.

School Board member, Mr. Steve Miller, yet again to his credit, per my statement that I wanted this on the record, went onto say that he is supportive of CC and does not feel that ACS is in the ‘position’ to ‘go in alone’. Check the record.

Interesting stuff.

Yes, I would LOVE to have included Mrs. Leggett’s presentation, but it is not as yet available online (at least to me). Deanna e-mailed her requesting a copy. Yes, of course, I will post it or a link to it as soon as we hear something back.

Enjoy.

I think the next ACS School Board meeting is tomorrow. With luck we should get the two presentations tomorrow. If not I sure will be stretching my legs and sauntering over to the microphone. In the parts we heard on NHPR there sure was no mention of the biometric bracelet and a possible overruling of Common Core in NH prior to its full adoption in 2015. Stay tuned.

I Request That The Alton Central School Board Do A Joint ‘Common Core Curriculum’ With Alton State Rep. Jane Cormier.

As I have been championing for the last week, we all need to get educated on the ‘Common Core Curriculum’ before we start debating the pros and cons. So, I brought it up at the May 13, 2013 School Board meeting — as a request, after I was told by them what I can or cannot do in ‘Public Input’. That was fine. All I required was to make a request. That was duly noted. I want Jane Cormier to also do a presentation at that same meeting so that the school administration and her can sort out where they stand relative to each other. Jane’s husband, who is a School Board member, was very much in support. So this is all good.

Since the supposed ‘fact’ that the ‘Common Core Curriculum’ mandates that students wear a federally-monitored biometric bracelet was brought up at Jane Cormier’s Saturday meeting, I demanded that Devanee, who is being homeschooled, be provided with one — since I do not want her to be the only kid in Alton that was left behind. The Principal and Superintendent ‘deny’ any knowledge of such bracelets. How can that be? Is it possible that the biometric bracelet is a red herring? We will find out, though the meeting might not happen till July or August when most parents are enjoying the vacation. But, I will get to the bottom of this biometric bracelet issue.

As I said at the meeting, I am surprised that they are talking about a bracelet. Why don’t they just implant a chip? Kids will not be able to tamper with it.

Again Lets Get The Facts Right About The ‘Common Core Curriculum’ Biometric Bracelet.

Deanna took particular notice of all the concerns raised at Saturday’s meeting about the biometric bracelets that the kids were going to be forced to wear. As with the misinformation about school hours in Korea, I knew that this didn’t sound true. So, as I always do, I set to to check it out. This article spells it all out.

Jane Cormier.

As I pointed out on Wednesday, I really don’t know enough about the ‘Common Core Curriculum’ to take a strong stance about it. So, I got Deanna to attend this meeting. I couldn’t make it because this is ‘Clearlakes Chorale‘ weekend and in the main it has been my job to make sure Devanee gets to all the requisite performances and practices (because the ‘Chorale’ was my idea) — and this weekend, starting last night, she has a total of four, because they are doing two concerts, one tonight and the other tomorrow.

So, Deanna went. She came back with some G-2. It was Jane’s meeting but Doris Hohensee (another State Rep or somebody who ran to be a State rep) also helped out. There was about 20 people in attendance. As far as she can tell there was NOBODY from Alton Central School (ACS) or the Alton School Board. Yes, Jane’s husband, Carlos Martinez is the new School Board member. He wasn’t there. From what she could see there was ONLY ONE ‘concerned Alton taxpayer’ in attendance — but he is a GOOD ONE. Maybe the best. So, I am happy about that.

Over the last 2 weeks I have learned, to my cost, that nobody in Alton cares about the issues that I bring to light. So, I am not going to bother. Let apathy rain, like Spring showers. As some of you may have worked out I have a bigger and better things to do. Push comes to shove I will just pay the additional property tax. So …

It does appear that there was, as was to be expected, some misinformation being touted around, with gay abandon, about the education system in South Korea. Two people are supposed to have claimed that the kids attend school till 10:30 pm at night! Well, I challenge these people, or Jane, to provide me with credible evidence of this. I found this and it says school close at 4 or 4:30 pm. Well, I attended an ‘expensive’ private school in Britain, Mill Hill, the same school that Mrs. Thatcher’s husband attended (and was the birthplace of the peerless ‘Oxford Dictionary’) and we classes 6 days a week, some of it late into the night, because sports, 3 to 3 days a week was also mandatory. I happened to be at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH this last Saturday night at 9:30 pm. I saw ‘young’ kids coming out of classes at 9:30 pm. So I guess it must be OK if it is in Brewster. Given that I had all my education in Asia or Britain, I am not one to criticize those systems especially because I managed to do ‘OK’, with the education I received, in the U.K. and in the U.S.

I happened to meet Tim Croes at the Alton dump this afternoon. We had a good chat. He is contrite. That is good. We are cool. Tim is young enough to be my son, possibly even my grandson. He knows that he let me down on a personal sense, because I had befriended him. But, it was a good chat. I am glad we spoke. I won’t bust Tim’s chops anymore. As for ‘speedy Gonzales’, 90 MPH Spaulding … who shows no contrition … That is a different matter.
