Our school, Alton Central School (ACS), is offering this FREE flu vaccine program and this morning Deanna was filling in the approval and acceptance forms. She wanted me to publicize this program — which I am now doing, though I am a bit worried about doing so! Why, because the ‘Local Control‘ fanatics may jump on this, as they have about the innocuous ‘Common Core‘, and try and stop it! I am actually amazed that NH has this very enlightened and beneficial program. I am surprised that they haven’t been forced to scrap it on fears that the kids were being injected with mind-drugs from D.C. or even microchips to monitor their activity (à la the infamous ‘Common Core biometric bracelet’).

I will be fair. We are but recent converts to flu vaccination. I didn’t see a need for it, until I nearly died (or to be more precise was nearly killed) two years ago. Have been getting it since, plus I am now a senior. Since Teischan has my constitution and is prone to colds, coughs, wheezes, asthma, bronchitis etc. etc. we decided to get her the shot too. And with the three of us getting the shot, Devanee, who just hates needles, wasn’t going to escape — if nothing else to hear her SCREAM when she gets pricked. She brings the whole place to a momentary halt — her screech so dramatic.

Yes, we know that you can get the flu for FREE at many clinics. Yes, we once got it for free at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Lebanon when we were there for another appointment for Deanna’s back. Yes, we also know that most health insurances cover it.

But, it is best if this can be done at school for FREE. So we are very happy though I have a sinking feeling that this will be the next program voted out by our dysfunctional, misguided School Board. If they do, may they be beset with the pox.

Growing up in Ceylon, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, we used to get free, compulsory vaccinations at school. One of them was for polio — the sugarcube vaccine. It was a BIG government sponsored propaganda programs. Ceylon’s school children being vaccinated to eradicate polio. We were all told to wear our ‘Sunday’ best. They took pictures of us lined up to get the sugarcubes. There was black-and-white news footage. My adoptive uncle, a doctor, then the Director of Medicine for Ceylon was the mastermind behind this anti-polio drive. Many decades later, having met folks in the U.S., my age, with polio, I found out that we were the ‘they are wogs, so they don’t count’ human guinea pigs for the sugarcube polio vaccine. I don’t mind — I guess because none of us got hurt. Actually we did good. As I said, I have seen more polio in this country than I ever did in Ceylon. So it is OK that my adoptive uncle, quite a man, still one of my heroes, volunteered us (including his own sons) for this testing. I never got to ask him. So, I am not sure whether he fully knew that we were the guinea pigs. It is possible that it was presented to him as one of the MANY foreign aid benefits that we used to get in those days — since we were a leading non-aligned nation (meaning we gladly took aid from all sides).

I happened to meet this teacher, away from school, yesterday evening and as is my wont I struck up a conversation. I will not identify the teacher and to even preclude gender identification will refer to the teacher as ‘M. T.’ for Mr./Mrs./Miss/Ms. Teacher.

I had met ‘M. T.’ before. So, as is my wont of late, I eventually brought up ‘Common Core‘ and the implications thereof. As was to be expected ‘M.T.’ had lot to say about the matter and the Board’s decision to cast a vote against it, though what that meant nobody is sure.

ShockgsI asked ‘M.T.’ as to why teachers like him did NOT attend School Board meetings where C.C. was being discussed — and especially the August workshop which had a special section devoted to ‘C.C’.

‘M.T.’ knocked my socks off by saying that ACS teachers were NOT aware of School Board meetings, when they take place, or what transpires at them!

WOW. WOW. WOW.

Talk about being GOBSMACKED.

Now ‘M.T.’ is not a spring chicken.  But, I am sure ‘M.T.’ is younger than me — as most people are.

If Deanna can find ACS School Board meeting schedules, postings, agendas and YouTube ‘tapings’ you surely would think that ACS teachers would be able to do the same — albeit, Deanna being very good at finding things on the Web.

So, I ask, still in shock, how we can rectify this. ‘M.T.’ says I SHOULD ask the Principal, Sydney Leggett, to post a notice in the Teacher’s Lounge. [As it happened, I saw Mrs. Leggett, serendipitously, when I dropped by the SAU office this afternoon, around 1 pm, to file, yet another, ‘Right to Know’ form. I asked Mrs. Leggett to oblige. I will follow-up with an e-mail.]

Again I was GOBSMACKED.

This was October 9, 2013.

I felt as if I was back in 1973.

How low-tech. Please ask the Principal to post a paper notice in our lounge. How quaint.

No e-mail. No Facebook. Nothing electronic. Nothing fancy. Just a paper notice.

Hhhhmmmmm.

So many things I can say, BUT I will abstain.

I really have no axe to grind with the ACS teachers. Most of them do a bang up job in what I think are trying conditions. So I don’t want to cause them any additional discomfort.

I will just be on Mrs. Leggett’s case to make sure that the Teachers know about the Board meetings.

Alton Center Superintendent William ‘Bill’ Lander is NOT telling us anything we didn’t already know. I had told you that this was a meaningless vote as soon as it was taken (though I readily confess that I am the one that set them up for taking the vote).

However, I do NOT think that Lander should have made the statement he did WITHOUT first having told that to the Board.

Two of us at the last Board meeting requested that Lander informs all of us as to the implications and ramifications of the vote.

There has been NO PUBLIC board meeting since the vote.

So Lander did not make this ‘of no consequence‘ statement to the Board. Instead he scurries off and tells it to a journalist.

That he has NO RESPECT for this Board has been abundantly clear for months — and I have written about it. To be fair, Lander has them by their short and curlies. The Board reports to him, not the other way around. He has nothing to lose and everything and MORE to gain. He got the board, in March 2013, to give him an iron-clad, platinum parachute THREE YEAR (3) contract. So now he can disrespect the Board as much as he wants and I don’t blame him. This Board has done nothing to earn his respect. They have too many secrets between them and Lander knows all the secrets.

That said, I am UPSET that he so blatantly disrespects the
Board Chair, Sandy Wyatt.

This is the second time in 2 months that he really has put the kindly, gentle lady in an awkward situation. I am getting a terrible feeling that he enjoys putting Mrs. Wyatt on the spot. Wonder if he would treat a male Chair the way he treats ‘poor’ Mrs. Wyatt?

Lander got Mrs. Wyatt to read a glowing account of his friend that he was hiring to be the $3,000 facilitator without telling Mrs. Wyatt all the facts. Mrs. Wyatt ended up with egg on face though they ended up trying to sort it out in non-public session.

Now this.

Lander should have first run this past the Board at the next meeting.

That he didn’t was disrespectful to the Chair, Mrs. Wyatt.

Mrs. Wyatt deserves better. I don’t really know her. I have only seen her at Board meetings. BUT, she over the last few months has earned our unstinted respect (and at least when it comes to me, that isn’t easy). She really is trying to do what is good for Alton. She is fair, somewhat patient and follows the rules.

But there is NOTHING, NADA, that the Board can do. They are his pawns.

This person is basically saying what I said earlier today.

This standard is innocuous.

The people who oppose it are doing it for purely political ideological reasons
or as is the case with one poor, hangdog soul because he is pussywhipped by his wife.

I am totally and utterly convinced beyond a shadow a doubt that all those around here that vehemently oppose ‘Common Core’ have no idea, whatsoever, as to what they are opposing!

They are opposing something because they think it came from D.C. and that Microsoft is behind it.

But, just look at what the standards are. They are BUT damn guidelines that say these are what kids should know at this grade. Just motherhood and apple pie stuff.

Here is A STANDARD: “Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5.”

What is YOUR problem with that?

Coming up with standards like that isn’t easy. It is NOT something that can be done on the fly. It takes years. That is why CC isn’t a bad thing.

Yesterday’s, i.e., September 26, 2013, ‘editorial’ (but lets face it you can’t have a socially inept, sports writer writing editorials) in the shameless ‘The Braysider‘ about Alton’s CC vote was abject proof of it. They have NO IDEA what a standard is.

But, it got me thinking. That is why I am showing you how to look at THE STANDARDS. IF it is easier for YOU start with the standards for the lower grades, e.g., Grade 2, where one of the standards is: “Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem”. Any questions? Is there anything sinister in that?

So a few things continue to bother me about the inane, meaningless
vote taken by the Alton Central School (ACS) Board on September 16, 2013.

Concern #1

The Alton Central superintendent, the Alton Central Principal, the Alton Central  TEACHERS representative (Mr. Richard Kirby) & Carol Locke, Principal of Gilmanton School were in favor of Common Core. They made that very, very clear.

But, Terri Noyes and Krista Argiropolis voted against CC.

So, lets look at this: 1 superintendent, 2 principals & the majority of ACS TEACHERS for CC.

Terri Noyes and Krista Argiropolis AGAINST CC — and given that democracy was at work they prevailed.

Does anybody KNOW the educational and professional credentials of Terri Noyes and Krista Argiropolis?

I am NOT even sure whether between them they can come up with 4 years of College. I could be wrong. I have asked the Superintendent, William (Bill) Lander, so far with no avail, to let me know what the educational credentials of these two women are.

BUT, one thing has to be sure. They CAN NOT be better educated on the issue they voted on THAN 1 superintendent, 2 principals & the majority of ACS TEACHERS.

So mull that over. 1 superintendent, 2 principals & the majority of ACS TEACHERS override, roughshod, by two women who from what I can see could have questionable math skills.

Concern #2

I was told, at a prior Board meeting, within the last 3 months, that a previous Board, within the last 2.5 years,
APPROVED the school going ahead with CC.

As far as I know Terri Noyes and Krista Argiropolis have been on the ACS Board forever and a day. I am sure they were there 2.5 years ago.

I would love to know how they voted at that meeting that APPROVED CC.

Did they vote ‘Yes’ for it BEFORE changing their mind now and voting ‘No’.

IF we had a more responsive  Superintendent I would be able to get this information from him. But, he doesn’t cooperate.

But, I will persevere.

I will be e-mailing Mr. William ‘Bill’ Lander, the Superintendent shortly, for clarification of the stated NECAP rating mentioned above. I have heard so many variants and I want to make sure that these are the LATEST and do not relate to prior years.

I do not know this ‘McCarthy’ though I did know of another when I lived in Meredith.

Good, common sense letter.

Drives me NUTS that ACS parents are not getting involved in this vital ‘Common Core’ debate.

The poor teachers, who to their credit, stood up and expressed their support for ‘Common Core’, at the meeting at which this inane vote was taken (albeit at my provocative instigation), have been kicked, painfully, in the nuts! [Yes, that is a figure of speech and is not meant to be literal.]

Puts the Principal, Sydney Leggett, in an unenviable position — though that probably doesn’t phase her a jot since she is combative by nature. This was HER ‘Obamacare’. Ever since she came to Alton this was her signature tune. I remember her talking 2 years ago of CC. She has told us that she had approval from a prior board. We will have to check. But right now she looks like she has gone rogue and implemented this CC-based ‘program’ without the Board’s backing — though that is NOT supposed to happen.

I am hearing some very interesting and strange things about two of the Board Members. I need to visit the Town Hall and look at the tax rolls. I knew that one of them had their house foreclosed earlier this year. Now I am being told that it is NOT ONE but TWO! If that is the case 40% of this Board, JUST THIS YEAR, have run foul of some of the most basic of fiscal responsibilities. WOW. I hope this is not true.

Cracks me up. Where are the so called ‘Friends of Alton School‘?

Common Core is more important that renovating the buildings. But where is the outrage? Where are the pamphlets? Where are the signs? Just dead silence.
