The Commonwealth leaders, to my delight and gratitude, demonstrated our
shared, inherent,
British ingrained CLASS.

Disagreements aside this is still one heck of ‘strictly by invitation only’ club.

This was good.

Long Live THE Commonwealth
in all its Glory.

Talking about the ‘Daily News‘ got me thinking about their iconic ‘Lake House‘ — their headquarters in Colombo, Ceylon when I was growing up.

I used to visit ‘Lake House’ on a fairly regular basis and it was also a ‘meeting place’ for the family if we were in different cars or taxis. It would be, lets meet outside ‘Lake House’.

I just went looking for a picture. I found one below. Wow.

There was NO big tree there when I was a boy! Can you see the steps? I still can see myself running up and down those steps in shorts. They seemed much bigger. I could be wrong but I remember some kind of water feature in front. Possibly a fountain. Does anybody remember that? I think there was a round-about.

This is the same obviously misguided and indubitably uneducated female who has been ranting about Sri Lanka leaving THE Commonwealth. I will not mention her blackened name because the last thing I want is to give this ‘disgrace’ any more publicity.

I have NEVER been so glad and relieved that I have not been Sri Lankan for 30 years! IF I believed in a god, I would thank that god that I am not Sri Lankan.

Churchill, like so many other OUTSTANDING world leaders, and U.S. Lincoln and Grant also come to mind, did solemnly believe in “in peace, magnanimity”. It is even possible that dear Winston borrowed that from Lincoln.

It is no great secret that in my personal pantheon of gods Dear Winston is the Babylonian ‘Anu’!
(You will have to look that up if your Babylonian mythology is rusty).

Of course, in always 20/20 hindsight, Winston did make some huge blunders in WW I and WW II. But so did Lincoln. That does not make either a bad person. They were doing their best per what they had and what they were told was best.

I really despair. Such arrant nonsense make Sri Lankans look bad.

I am also NOT happy that Cameron mentioned Winston and the Sri Lankan president in the same sentence. Yes, they were both victorious but Sri Lanka’s 30-year civil war, despite how bad it was, was NOT WW II! Other than that the only similarity that I see in the two are that they are both corpulent — albeit with Winston, as ever, doing it in style.

This to me was the most inglorious moment, so far, re. CHOGM 2013.

I could be wrong but I don’t see the Sri Lanka president with his easy-to-spot white ‘national’ — always augmented with a flashy red papal stole.

I was aghast to realize that I could no longer remember the diplomatic protocol for such visits! Given that I spent 28 years of my life in diplomatic circles I used to know all of the airport protocols — who had to meet who when they arrived.

From what I can see Charles was not met by the President because he is NOT a head-of-state. So, I think, in terms of the strict rules of International diplomacy this was ‘OK’ — and the Palace would have known this too.

Aaahh! But, rules are to be broken, especially at this level. I think it would have been COOL if the President had been there to see them off the (very understated) plane. That would have given CHOGM some positive coverage overseas. [It is possible that the President’s wife, a staunch Catholic, was not keen on welcoming this openly adulterous, previously divorced couple. This is the beauty of Sri Lanka and what it was always like. A country that is now claiming to be a Buddhist nation with a 1st Lady who is Catholic.]

Just watching the males that greeted the dapper ol’ Prince I was delighted to see that there were plenty of our trademark ‘rice and dahl‘ pot bellies proudly on display — pushing out those white shirts with pride; our way of daily proclaiming, pictures of malnourished kids be damned, we are a country of plenty when it comes to rice and dahl.

Got another e-mail yesterday where a Sri Lankan was impressed with the German bloody cars that the government had bought for CHOGM (which will then be given, gratis (and for free), to the President’s extended family after the conference, as is the normal practice in 3rd world countries). What can I say?

On average I get 3 to 4 e-mails a day from Sri Lankans, that I do not know, with various political, propaganda and op-ed messages. Some are in Sinhalese, which is a shame — because it is pearls before swine.
[I can no longer read Sinhalese though my first 10 grades of schooling was all in Sinhalese and I did ace an ‘A’, at A-level (from the University of London exam board), for Sinhalese in 1970 when I had to get at least an ‘O’-level in a second language in order to apply for any Universities in the U.K.]

Today I got an e-mail with a picture of malnourished kids, who I assume are meant to be Sri Lankan (though I am skeptical of that) alongside a fleet of what looks like bloody German Mercedes Benzes. Picture reproduced below. It had a link to a Facebook page ‘Ape Rata. OK. I am sure ‘Ape’ means ‘OUR’. My Sinhalese isn’t that rusty. And I think ‘Rata’ means ‘country’. So it, I think, means ‘Our Country’. I visited (and yes, given that computers were my life for over 40 years) I do have ways and means of getting to things I want — THOUGH I do not have a Facebook account (to Deanna’s increasing ‘annoyance’ or amusement).

Interesting Facebook. It is all in Sinhalese BUT the pictures are worth a MILLION RUPEES. They cracked me up. The guy with the moustache, in white (our national dress) with a red stole (like the pope, because his wife is Catholic) is the current President — the one that put an end to the three decades old civil war. I do not know him. I think he is the FIRST President that is a total stranger to me. I knew, personally, all of the early ones and even a fairly recent one. This one, I have no personal experience. I have heard good, bad and the ugly.

Well, the cartoons and pictures, all from facebook/aparata tell their own story. I think we can all work out what they are saying. I assume that they must have imposed a 7% tax to cover CHOGM costs. Yes, I had heard about the corruption — but the way I look at it is corruption is all around us and third-world countries like Sri Lanka learned from the best, the West. So, as I like to say, in my pidgin English: ‘It is like the pottle calling the kettle brown’.

If this is TRUE it is criminal. Why Sri Lankans like bloody German cars is beyond me. Yes, the Germans didn’t bomb us, the Japanese did. What can I say. I can’t apologize because I am not Sri Lankan anymore.

Not much more to add here. Make up your own minds. I really have no skin in the game here.

Bloody typical. Just NO CLASS!

Secretary-General of the Commonwealth arriving at a Commonwealth summit ahead of Remembrance Day, Poppy Day, with a bare bloody lapel.

Indians!

This is why I am ecstatic and running around thanking all of the Indian gods I can think of that the Indian, P.M., President or whoever has decided not to attend.

I was also thinking this morning, Canada should leave the Commonwealth. I have come up with the BEST criteria for Commonwealth membership. CRICKET.

If you don’t have a proper, credible national cricket team get the hell out of our Commonwealth. Yes, yes, of course, I know that Canada claims to have a cricket team made up of ex-pats from other Commonwealth countries. But, it is not a Test team and from the little I have seen of them they couldn’t beat the Oxford 11 even if our boys agreed to bat ‘in reverse’ and field with one hand tied behind their backs.

So, I might be on my own, but I am happy that India and Canada will not be there. They will not be missed — trust me on that.

I don’t really know why I feel the need to defend Sri Lanka given that my links to that country are now tenuous at best — especially since I now realize I am adopted and have no real idea as to who my parents were other than my biological father ‘was a gambler’ (which I take as typical Sri Lankan talk to mean that he was a ‘playboy’ — which I think is real neat and goes to prove that it is indeed very true that ‘the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree’. I have not lived in Ceylon/Sri Lanka since August 1967, and I relinquished my citizenship in 1983. So, whether they believe it or not in Israel, I have not held a Sri Lankan passport since then.

So that said, I find the BBC allegations a bit hard to swallow. Yes, I appreciate that most Sri Lankan men are ‘reprobates’ when it comes to ‘lusting after women’. A genetic trait. I also think that the first real crush I had, when I was but 8, was for a tamil girl who lived nearby — at least 6 years older than me, lily white(!) and a national musician; but then again, all my male cousins had a crush on her too and my adoptive parents treated her as another one of their adoptive kids. So, I appreciate that there can be exceptions.

But, I find it hard to believe that most Sinhalese men would rape tamil women unless they were ordered to do so — and even then would only do so under tremendous coercion! It is also a terrible crime. Many of these Sinhalese men will also be Buddhists. So, putting all of this together I am skeptical about the allegations. I AM SURE that there has been isolated incidents — Sri Lankan men, like Clinton, often having trouble keeping their lust in check. But, widespread …. I am skeptical, though I have no evidence either way. Just my perception of things.

As to my man, Desmond, slamming Sri Lanka. What can I say. Desmond really should think about going out in a blaze of glory and the top of his game rather than getting involved in issues that he is not an expert and as such can say things that he will later regret. That is my take.
