I Got A Garmin Vivoactive HR Activity/Fitness Tracker.

by Anura Guruge

So, I got a Garmin Vivoactive HR from Best Buy on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. I chose this model for the Heart Rate Monitor and GPS — though I have yet to work out how to use the GPS. I bought in from Best Buy, rather than Amazon, because I used a bunch of Reward Points which meant that I didn’t have to pay much for this tracker. But NOT buying anything from Best Buy again — especially since I used up all my Reward Points.

On May 25, 2017, I had got Deanna a FitBit Alta HR.

I did NOT get a FitBit because I have never had much luck with FitBits — whether with their devices or their STOCK! I had reluctantly bought some FIT shares, right after the IPO, because a then 14-year old shamed me into doing so, he being extremely gung-ho.

I am not new to fitness trackers. The first FitBit I bought was at Christmas 2011.

But after I threw my original FitBit away I had lost interest and was not following the technology.

Then in mid-May we had Shane Selling my exceptional computer guy and Drone whizard. Of late Shane has become a fitness fanatic and is extremely fit. He was wearing a FitBit Alta HR. First time I had been up close to a FitBit in 5 years. I was vaguely impressed. Deanna more so.

Shane, the nice guy he is, took his FitBit off his wrist and put it on mine.

I was IMMEDIATELY shocked by how high my heart rate was! I nearly had a heart attack. It was in the 80s. It should not have been.

That is when I decided that I need to get an activity tracker with heart rate monitoring.

I got Deanna a FitBit Alta HR the next day BUT spent 2 weeks researching the technology. Hence the Garmin for I.

I need to get back into shape and LOSE SOME WEIGHT! I am borderline obese and not happy about that. Oh YES, I have been MUCH HEAVIER but I am not proud of that.

It is helping. A LONG WAY TO GO.

Ironically, because of my ‘Day-Off Schedule’, some school appointments and rain I have NOT gone for a run since I got the Garmin. That will get rectified tomorrow.

I will keep you posted.

Only knew him by reputation though I am sure he and I must have been at the same ‘Computer Shows’ (e.g., InterOp) at the same time.

Always admired him for his vision. Shame to see him go. But I am getting to THAT AGE. Lot of people I knew are now old (as am I). So Gene Amdahl (who I had met) and now Andy Grove. So two giants from the 1970s/1980s computer age.

He sent me this link, a couple of days ago, along with the stills he took
at the 2014 Laconia Airport Open Day.

Loved the video. Flying through this ‘dog run’ and then through some goal posts is way cool.

Park in Laconia. Not sure which one. He lives on Opechee so this could be that. Will have to ask him’

Enjoy.

P.S., Shane, of course, being the IT guru that he is,
has his own YouTube ‘channel’. This video
is on that channel. So you are already there.

Emergency, SOS, Condom Delivery — BIGGEST Market For (Amazon) Drone Delivery: Mark My Word. THE NEXT BIG THING.

Think about it.

My all time favorite word
(same as that of Thomas J. Watson, Sr.):

THINK.

What is the one thing that a man will pay and arm and a leg for instant gratification …

Immediate access to a condom in a pinch.

agcondomdelivery

No, I am not here talking from experience. Never had to. I have THE gift of the gab!

[Durex is British and I have a lovely Durex-related story. Not about condoms per se
but about the ‘London Rubber Company’ that makes Durex.
I knew the wife of a ‘London Rubber Company’
Board Member

BUT had no idea that they made Durex! I thought they made tires.
She used to ask me to take my pants down! Honest.
She was a private, high end physiotherapist
(who did it for the fun)
and I, with private insurance, was prone to
groin strains from too much cricket. HONEST.]

Though it has NOT made me rich I am good at coming up with BIG ideas way, way ahead of their time.

I did, while working for IBM (U.K.), invent (to my now DREAD), the every so annoying ‘serial number’ based software validation method!

Yes, that was me in 1978 — 3 years ahead of the PC.

Here is the PROOF. It is all there … in print and at the U.S. Patents office.

Two other BIG ideas way ahead of their time … though they are now everyday items:

1/ Atomic clock-based wristwatches — way back in 1976 (yes, while at IBM).

2/ Computerized Scrabble — in 1978 for my Master’s dissertation, BUT I was foiled BECAUSE we didn’t have GOOD computer-based dictionaries.

Anyhow.

Mark my word.

Amazon or somebody else will make BILLIONS
with Drone delivered condoms — ordered from
an APP that automatically provides the GPS coordinates.

It is beautiful. It can be delivered to a parked car or a boat.

NOT HEAVY.

They can have premium pricing.

$35 more if you want it in the next 15 minutes.

You can even air drop it.

Brilliant.

Yes, I know ….

I have been told it all my life …

What can I say.

It is the cross that I carry, lightly.

One of the Morgans Hotels in Swansea. Do NOT remember it.

I, even today, consider Swansea my ‘home town’.

I spent 3 of the best years of my life, 1971 – 1974, in Swansea. I would not be seated here, writing this, if I had not gone to Swansea. Swansea is where I went, kind of on a whim, to get my first degree — in computer technology. My 3 years there was a study in riotous hedonism coupled with intense amount of energy expended on learning to program, programming languages and operating systems. i didn’t go to many classes. There were some that I never attended, at all.  In the British system of the time, per centuries old tradition, there was no continuous assessments, quizzes or tests. Attending class was also not mandatory. All you had to do was sit for a STIFF set of exams at the end of each year, each exam 3 hours long — and typically you had about 6 you needed to sit. If you passed your 1st year exams you were allowed to go to the 2nd year and if you passed your 2nd year to your 3rd and final. And then, at the end of your 3rd year, you had your FINALS. That determines whether you got a degree or not. So, despite not attending classes, living a very hedonistic lifestyle I still managed to get a degree and I didn’t even sit for one exam because I had no idea about the subject since I had never attended a single class! But, the British system was made for reprobates like me. 100/100 was not the limit on an exam you took! Aaahh! At the top of the exam paper it would say something along the lines of ‘correctly answering 6 of the 9 questions will enable you to get full marks’. So each question was worth around 16.7 marks — though you always got a few points knocked off. But, with luck you could get 10 to 15 points PER question. So 6 got you 90. But, IF you, in the 3 hours managed to answer ALL 9 you could get 120 or more. So that was my strategy. I knew I could ace, more than ace, anything to do with programming, computer systems and some level of calculus. So, I would set out to get 120 in the exams I sat. It is the total of the 6 exams that count. So I could scrape by and still get an Honours degree even if I stayed in bed during one of the final exams. Plus, I had an unconditional job offer, degree or no degree, from IBM. But, I wanted to get a degree just for the heck of it. So, suffice to say, I have basically good and fun memories of Swansea.

I do NOT remember these hotels from my time there. I wasn’t into hotels at the time. I was young.

I lived, for 2 years, in a delightful old mansion, with a bunch of older reprobates and an old retired couple who owned the place, called ‘Uplands House‘ — opposite Dylan Thomas’ birthplace on Cwmdonkin Drive. Can you say that: Cwmdonkin Drive. I looked for it on Google Maps. Have a dreadful feeling that it was torn down. It was old and kind of decrepit — but huge.

It appears that Swansea is now famous for its Beaujolais Nouveau celebrations.

That is new to me. Though you could drink in England when you were quite young, definitely by 16, I didn’t start drinking till I basically left Swansea. Drinking, and especially being drunk, would have got in the way of all the fun I was having! That is the reason that I also never did drugs though for periods of time I hung out with some heavy inhalers. I didn’t want anything ‘clouding’ my brain because that would have prevented me from savoring every second of my life. So to me, hedonism was always with a clear mind sans the need for any external stimulants. But, as I am the first to admit, I am strange. That said, I would not, even today, swap my 3 years in Swansea for the promise of not being strange.

We had read about him in the ‘Laconia Daily Sun‘ but got to meet him at the ‘Laconia Airport Open House‘ on June 8. I convinced Shane to come and take some aerial pictures of our house and also to check out my PC — given that he is an high end computer specialist. So, that is how this came to be. It was very cool. We had a lot of fun. Thanks Shane.

David Nix Of Belmont, NH: Finally A Competent, Credible & Reliable Computer Person In The Lakes Region.

David Nix20001Dec2013x125

..
by
Anura Guruge

To say that I am fussy about my PCs, especially my main ‘work’ PC, would be beyond an understatement. Lets face it, one way or another, in essentially three shifts, the last ending well past midnight, I spend at least 10 hours a day on my main PC, often more. When I have problems with my PC I am not a happy camper. It ruins my day. Yes, I have two backup computers, but they are not as brawny as my main PC.

PC hardware is not my thing. All the wires, connectors and setup is way too tight and delicate for my liking. So I always have somebody, somebody good, do my hardware. Once Windows is up I can do the rest, but I won’t touch the hardware (other than cleaning it out with compressed air once a month). Suffice to say I am always in the look out for competent, reliable hardware folks that are reliable and trustworthy. In my experience this has been a scarce commodity in the Lakes Region. A couple of folks I have used in the past have moved on. Over the last 3 years or so I have had real troubles finding anyone.

I have given up on those that now advertise on Craigslist. I don’t know why they bother. You contact them and they are basically not interested. They say they will call or that they will come, but you never hear from them. Maybe they are just waiting to get calls from ol’ ladies that they can rip off.

I had ended up using somebody I had met at BestBuy, who lives in Hillsborough, to do my hardware. But, it is a 90 drive for him and he works crazy hours.

A couple of weeks ago, when I was crazy busy with the sede vacante, I started getting funny noises coming from one or more of my fans in the PC case — and the case alone has 4 fans, not counting the ones on the i7 chip, the video card and the power supply. I really needed somebody to come and look at the fans.

Tim Croes, of ‘The Baysider’, had just interviewed me and he was coming around on election day. I e-mailed him and asked if he, as a local, knew any good PC folks.

He e-mailed me back with David’s name and phone number. I called. He was very pleasant. He said he could come over in 2 days. That was fair. We got talking. I asked him if he was related to Stephen Nix, the Real Estate/Property attorney in Gilford. He was. Steve was his brother. I had used Steve, maybe 11 years ago, when I had a mooring buoy issue when I lived waterfront in Gilford. Steve took care of it for me very efficiently and affordably. I was impressed. This was a good omen.

David came last Wednesday. He cleaned, reseated and checked out all my fans. My rear 140cm fan was not working. I needed a new one. I ordered one. David came again today and put it in.

I like David. He is good. He is in his early 50s. So he is not a ‘kid’ per se. He knows what he is doing. He is careful. He is thorough. He is also very reasonable.

He is a musician, has been a ski instructor at Gunstock for decades and is from a local family. All around good person.

I am impressed. I recommend him.

If you need any computer work contact David. You will be glad you did.

One of the 7 fans in my PC, this the CPU fan on Intel i7 chip.
