My doubts are based on the fact that Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) had and still continues to have a relatively high prevalence of Type II Diabetes — and NOBODY can drink more tea than the folks in Sri Lanka.
But, they, at least when I was growing up, drank tea with LOTS of sugar and in many cases large helpings of (sweetened) condensed milk. They liked it sweet. Diabetes was, as such, very common.
So, that is a caveat that I would INSIST upon in the context of this claim. Tea WITHOUT SUGAR MIGHT reduce your chances of getting Type II diabetes.
IF you insist on drinking it with sugar, all best are off.
