I Sued Ghislaine Maxwell’s Dad, Robert, In 1983 & Won.

by Anura Guruge

One of my small claims to fame. It was said that trying to sue ‘Robert Maxwell‘ was folly. That he never settled & that he would bankrupt you with legal maneuvers. Well, he settled!

OK. To be pedantic, I sued his private publishing company ‘Pergamon Press‘ rather than he, himself. But, as far as all of us were concerned we were suing Robert ‘bloody’ Maxwell.

It was for copyright violation. He tried to steal the copyright to my first (& most successful (& thus, famous)) book, ‘SNA: Theory & Practice‘. Folks told me it was minor. That it did not affect my royalties or my authorship. Heck, NO. I wrote it. I wanted my copyright.

This was in my heyday. I hired the BEST Queen’s Counsels (QC) I could find in London. It wasn’t cheap, BUT it was worth it. I was so mad.

It didn’t go to court. They settled in a few days, once the QC wrote to them. They caved in. They didn’t have a leg to stand on.

Bloody Maxwell.

To be FAIR, his company ‘Pergamon Press’ was the making of I. If not for them, I would not be here. But, that didn’t give them the right to try & steal what was mine. Something very dear to I.

Bolstered by that victory, I went after two other entities for copyright violations. Won those too. SMILE. 3-0 when it comes to copyright & I.

Another Custom ‘American Girl Doll’ Bed By Teischan (11).

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

From discarded shelf unit she found at our local Swap Shop yesterday. She did the painting, decorations and made the mattress! She is now going to make some blankets. I suggested she also make some linen to put in the drawer units. Did all of this, including the sewing of the mattress, on her own. She has two (2) electric sewing machines of her own and also uses her mother’s fancy Japanese one. She is only one who does much sewing around the house these days.

A previous bed she made in July last year.

The ‘American Girl Doll‘ corner of her room
— mainly with things she has made.

Teischan likes doing crafts and is good at it. Next to her electronics, crafting is her next greatest pastime.

She particularly enjoys making elaborate stuff for her two ‘American Girl Dolls‘. Check out: bathroom/shower, furniture, fireplace, Christmas, Harry Potter books etc.. She has been doing this for two years.

Today, it was this bed. She only picked it up yesterday. It is quite heavy and I have helped her a few times carrying it around. The dolls have quite few beds now, including a bunk bed.

I am very happy that she does this stuff. She could make a career out of it.

U.S. Copyright Act Was Signed Into Law, This Day 227-Years Ago; May 31, 1790 — By George Washington, No Less.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access the U.S. ‘copyright.gov’.

227-years ago. Good to know that they were concerned about it that long ago — though, to be fair, the U.S., at this juncture, was trying to catch up with Britain’s Copyright Act, a.k.a. ‘Statute of Anne’, passed 80-years earlier.

I am, as a writer and photographer, a great believer in copyright. So far I have contested and won three copyright cases involving my books. Didn’t make any money but justice was done.

Ahead Of February 4, 2017 Sri Lanka ‘Independence Day’ Some Drawings From 1950s Ceylon.

This drawings are Copyright protected.

Yes, these are MY drawings, in crayon, when I was about 6 or 7.

For those that are familiar with Ceylon/Sri Lanka the scenes should be recognizable! The beach, with the ships and a kite flyer is Galle Face, in Colombo.

The top picture is of Sri Lankan devil dancers.

A car on the 2nd floor of the house was NOT some aberration. That was actually the case. The house, the house that I lived in, was built on the side of a hill. So there was a level below the car porch, if you viewed the house from the back!

The hunter is a genuine Vedda — the original indigenous folks of the island. I had been out to see them.

‘Harry Potter’ Books For ‘American Girl Doll’ By Teischan (10).

by Anura Guruge

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

As posted here Teischan, who loves doing crafts, particularly enjoys making customized stuff for her two ‘American Girl Dolls‘. Check out: bathroom/shower, furniture, fireplace, Christmas). She has been doing this for two years.

She likes to make sure that her ‘Girl Dolls’ do the same things as she does. So one of the presents she wants for Christmas is an ‘American Girl Doll’ FLUTE — and, per scale, this tiny flute costs as much as real one!

Teischan has also caught the ‘Harry Potter‘ bug. She is on her fourth book.

Today she decided she was going to make ‘Harry Potter’ books for the dolls! You can see the covers. I suggested she make the insides from styrofoam. She is not sure. She wants to try and do it out of paper. Knowing her I would not be surprised if she cuts 400 tiny pages and then tries to bind them!

I will keep you posted.

I am SURE she has violated J.K. Rowling’s copyright, BUT as fellow British authors (though of VASTLY different statures) I am SURE she will not mind and maybe even be amused. Now, I am sure ‘American Girl Doll’ will cotton on and start selling books at $30 a copy. {SMILE}

Over the years I would receive great pictures of Ceylon, from the old days, from various people.

It kind of went unsaid that some of them wanted me to share these pictures with the World given that they knew that I had Web presence.

And I actually did that. For the longest time I had an ‘Images from Ceylon’ page on my ‘guruge.com‘ Website. When I redid the Website, in Weebly, I never got around to adding that page back on.

Well this morning, spurred by a post I saw on Facebook, my my old ex-school mate Lalith Ruberu, I decided to rectify this omission.

So I created a permanent (fixed) ‘Ceylon’ page here. See above.

Go check it out.

The OLD Ceylon pictures are not mine.
But their copyright would have long expired.
Don’t come to me claiming copyright unless
you can prove that you legally renewed it — in the U.S.

I know my copyright laws. SMILE.

With This Post I Claim ‘First Use Rights’ Of The Term ‘Infactrivs’.

Anura Guruge, June 8, 2013.

Anura Guruge

Of course there is a reason. There is (and has always been) a method to my madness.

I just want ‘first use right’ if this ever, ever came up (not that it really can because among other things book titles cannot be copyrighted!)

I did a Google & BING search just to be sure.

Beauty of today’s blogging. A WordPress post which is timestamped and preserved (forever by WordPress) is such a wonderful and totally free way to establish a claim.

With luck all will become clear soon.

In the meantime try out the word. It really does roll off your tongue. Yes, ‘today’ (actually yesterday since it is now 1 am), it having been Deanna’s birthday, we went for a long walk on Old Orchard Beach, ME. This word came to my head while I was walking. The joys of befriending your brain.
