McDonald’s, COVID-19 & Much Handled CREDIT CARDS — It Is NOT Hygenic!

by Anura Guruge

I had, as I said in these two posts, stopped doing TAKE OUT during COVID-19 — after having got some, during the early days, on March 22nd (which happened to be somebody’s birthday).

Well, it was Maya’s 9th birthday yesterday, and kind of against my will, we ended up going to the Alton (NH) McDonald’s — because that is the tradition (and I had already established that we were just getting cheeseburgers for the DOGS & nothing for us).

I, being a Brit, NEVER use drive-throughs! Do not like them. Actually hate them. I like to go in an order & of late I can use the self-serve kiosk with aplomb.

Well, I was forced to use the bloody drive-through. NEVER AGAIN — and definitely not during COVID.

They do NOT have outside credit card readers. YIKES.

So, I have to hand my card over to an UNGLOVED kid.

Then get it back. No spraying.

Not funny.

This is NUTS.

Plus his mask did NOT cover his nose.

This is CRAZY.

“Barclaycard” Is An Insult To British Banking; Their Call Center Is An Insult To Humanity.

by Anura Guruge

In over 40-years of using credit cards I have never, ever, experienced such atrocious customer service as that I got (or more to the point did NOT get) from Barclaycard’s moronic Call Center in the Philippines.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

Yes, it took Amazon ten-years to perfect it, but Amazon’s Call Centers in the Philippines (and I think they have three locations) are outstanding.

Not so Barclaycard’s. Theirs is worse than a nightmare. The representatives are barely literate. I kid you not. They have no idea what you are talking about. I don’t think they have ever used a credit card themselves. All they can do is read a script. I feel sorry for them.

As a proud and patriotic Brit, I am ASHAMED that Barclaycard is British. Barclaycard is a sad affront to the long and mainly distinguished legacy of British banking. I, as a teenager, had my very first bank account at Barclays. I was chuffed to be a Barclays’ customer.

Not anymore. I closed my damn Barclaycard account.

Their Filipino Call Center. I don’t want to be TOO RUDE, but ‘Boy of Boy’. Talk about incompetence. Talk about rank stupidity. But, not their fault. Barclaycard has NOT trained them.

Barclaycard really has let the side down with this Call Center. I can’t tell you how BAD they were. It was that bad.

Take my word. I never mislead you. Do NOT deal with Barclaycard. IF you do, YOU will live to regret it.

Close your Barclaycard account. Burn your Barclaycard.

In my experience you cannot go wrong with a ‘Bank of America’ credit card. You get to deal with Americans not folks whose English is marginal.

So, ditch Barclaycard, get a BofA Credit Card. You will THANK ME for this advice.

Discover Card’s FREE ‘Credit Report Activity’ Monitoring Seems To Work.

by Anura Guruge

I like my Discover Credit Card.

I have had it since 1991, i.e., I have been a member for 27-years. During that time I do not think I have ever had a problem with them.

Something about them. They just, always, seem different — but, in a GOOD WAY without fail. They just seem so eager and happy to please.

Recently, following the criminal Equifax debacle they sent me an e-mail offering FREE social security number monitoring on credit reporting services. If they saw my ‘social’ appearing on credit report they will let me know — for free. I signed up and it was easy enough.

Today, for the first time, I got this e-mail.

I checked it. It was bona fide. An new account I had opened. So, it works. I am happy.

Barclaycard US & A Fraudulent $194 Charge From Best Buy.

by Anura Guruge

A sample image found on the Web. {SMILE}

I got a Barclaycard Mastercard in February of this year. The last thing I needed was another credit card (to the dozen or more I already had) BUT I would have been an even bigger fool than normal to turn down the generous, one-time $250 Cash Back Reward — given that the 90-day spend requirement to get that was beyond easy to meet. {SMILE}. Yes, I got the $250, as a statement credit, within six weeks and that made me happy.

Given my British antecedents I am fond of Barclays. A good British institution.

I don’t use the Barclaycard as much as I probably should — preferring instead, for reasons I am not truly sure as to why, to use my Bank of America (BofA), Fidelity or Discover.

Anywho …

I check transaction activity on all my cards, online, irrespective of the frequency of use, on a regular basis.

Last week I checked the Barclaycard account and was SURPRISED to see a PENDING charge for $194.40 from Best Buy. I certainly had not bought anything from Best Buy in a month — though it was very true that I had been browsing the Best Buy Website that week looking for a new tablet. But, I was pretty certain I had not accidently bought one. Checked my Best Buy account. Nothing, and I would NOT have bought anything outside of the account because I would have wanted my Best Buy points. Checked around. Nope, nobody in the house had bought anything from Best Buy — of late.

In reality we had only bought two things from Best Buy THIS year: the new refrigerator in early April and an Android phone (later returned) in late April. I had paid for the refrigerator on a Best Buy credit card. However, I had bought the phone using the Barclaycard and that transaction was properly listed — as was the RETURN a week later.

So this was a mystery and semi-scary.

A $194.40 charge, albeit still pending, on my card.

I called them. They answered fairly quickly.

They were SLICK and wonderful.

No hassle, no grief. Just a few questions and then it was BANG, BANG, BANG.

They cancelled my card. They voided the transaction and it was GONE — totally gone — by the next day.

FedEx delivered a new card next morning by 10am! Wow.

I am impressed. I am glad I got a Barclaycard.

But, a heads up.

This is scary. So who stole my card information — since I still had the card in my possession.

I wonder whether Barclaycard will be able to find out.

SYF, ‘Synchrony Financial’ As A Cheap Proxy Stock For Amazon (AMZN).

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and view here. From ‘MarketWatch’ at marketwatch.com (SYF)

Not sure why I had NOT thought of this before. Maybe because I was already in AMZN, big time, and had been so for over 2 years.

But, this morning I happened to see SYF on CNBC and it got me thinking.

Why is it a PROXY for AMZN?

Because Amazon Store Credit Cards are issued by Synchrony Financial (via their Bank).

So more people that get Amazon Credit Cards the better it is for SYF.

AMZN at $900 is expensive and it is going up …

Yes, SYF will NOT MATCH AMZN performance.

But, SYF is 30 times CHEAPER.

So just a thought. Worth considering. I am.

Cameta Camera — Making Ordering A Camera An Absolute Bloody PAIN.

On Friday, May 13, 2016, I tried to order a Fuji camera kit from Cameta Camera. It turned out to be a terrible ordeal. Took all the pleasure out of buying a new camera. Shame on YOU Cameta Camera.

Until this atrocious, unforgivable experience I have always thought highly of Cameta. Check this post from October 2015 titled “Nothing BUT Kudos, Very High Kudos, For Cameta Camera“.

Well not anymore.

I went to Cameta because they have good kits and because I wanted to show my GRATITUDE for how graciously they had treated me in the past. To be fair, the salesman I deal with, Lou Cohen (ext. 2168), is extremely nice, helpful and professional. The problems are with Cameta’s arrogant, unprofessional (and obviously poorly trained) order processing group.

Well Cameta has a new policy. They call up and check your credentials with your credit card company before they process the order. But it is an all or nothing verification. If Cameta has you on ‘XYZ Road’ and the credit card company has you at ‘XYX Rd’ the verification will fail. If you give Cameta your cell number and the credit card company has your home number the verification will fail.

This is CRAZY. It is NOT Cameta’s job to try and further authenticate a credit card BEYOND name, address, account number, expiration, and ccv code. If the credit card was stolen the credit card company will deal with it. Cameta is trying to be too clever.

Not impressed at all, at all. We finally got the damn order placed — and it was NOT a small order. I don’t buy $300 point-and-shoots (or at least not anymore). Ended up placing the order using my Discover Card. I logged onto Discover pulled up my profile and made sure bloody Cameta had it letter for letter. Though I see a temp. authorization at Discover I have yet to receive an order confirmation from the dastardly Cameta.

I am also NOT going to get the camera till mid next week. Jesus wept. IF I had ordered it with my buddy Ray Messiah at BuyDig I would have had the camera Saturday morning by 10am.

Well lesson well learned. NEVER AGAIN. Screw you Cameta.

Ray I am so, so sorry I did not come to you. I was trying to be nice. That is what happens.

YOU have been WARNED. Stay clear. Shop BuyDig.

canonitdownoct25I know because I have called them up 3 times today, Monday, October 26, 2015. The first time was around noon. The guy I spoke to sounded vague and confused. But on the other two calls I got very proficient ladies who explained exactly what the problem was. They came in this morning to find that the system was ‘going up and down’. It had then been taken down by IT. They weren’t sure when it would be up.

HOPE that they have NOT been hacked, à la Sony. IF they have been hacked we won’t hear about it for weeks. I will not, of course, be amused. As somebody who has bought multiple refurbished cameras directly through them, they have my credit card information.

So, a heads up, if you have dealings with Canaon U.S.A., as I do.

I hated DirecTV, with a vengeance, from the very first day I had it installed on June 21, 2013. Just check the above posts. It was a litany of never ending lies, scams and deception. I had to contact the BBB to help them sought out the initial order FRAUD and it was settled in my favor.

I vowed on these pages that I will get rid of DirecTV the very first day that I could — without giving them the satisfaction of charging me a cancellation penalty. I even set up this (— >>>) countdown clock.

Well DirecTV charges a month ahead, and given their unscrupulousness actually charges you one day AHEAD each month. So I had DirecTV installed on a 21st BUT they insist on charging my credit card on the 20th of each month. C’est la vie. The least of their many sins.

So on May 20, 2015, I paid for May 21 to June 20, 2015. That was the end of my contract. I called on May 21 to cancel. They said it was too early.

I called again on Friday, May 29, 2015. I called them twice and also talked with them on chat — and I have the transcript. Eventually they said that my account was closed.

It wasn’t. On Saturday, May 30, I still had service.

I called again. They said I was cancelled BUT they were keeping my service on …

So, that was 3 phone calls and one chat … and I still had service.

Around 3:30pm, Saturday, a very greasy sounding clown from DirecTV calls me up — on my cell — and starts with this “So, how can we rectify this mistake …” spiel. I blew my top. Though I give the impression of losing my temper and getting angry in reality I ONLY allow myself, AT MOST, 2 actual temper tantrums a year. [It has all to do with mind control.] But the two temper tantrums I permit myself, a year, are DOOZIES. I go to town. I go up one side of a person and down the other. As some of you know I do not swear. I don’t even use the ‘s’ word — which I detest. Yes, I frequently use damn, bloody and occasionally ‘bugger’ but we Brits do NOT consider those swear words — and “bugger” in Ceylon/Sri Lanka is a term of endearment. But I have a extremely potent vocabulary of swear words and can swear very effectively. I let that idiot from DirecTV have it with both barrels. I enjoyed it. Within seconds he was WHIMPERING: “OK. OK. I will cancel your account. You can stop now.” It was fun. The service is now disconnected.

I feel such a sense of relief. I really hated DirecTV and as with my temper I make sure that I do not hate many things — at any given time since that is a waste of time and energy. So as with the 2 tantrums a year I try to limit the things I hate at any given time to 2. That works. So for the last 2 years I have only hated two things: DirecTV and …. Now I am down to one. It gets better. I never really hated KIA, just disliked them, but in a couple of hours I am getting rid of our KIA Sportage too — 28 days ahead of its lease-end. But as with DirecTV I have paid up and can now return it. More on that once I actually

IF you get an e-mail like the one above, possibly with different wording, WITH AN ATTACHMENT, do NOT — I repeat DO NOT — click on ANYTHING. Do not even look at the attachment. Make the sign of the cross with your fingers and back away.

Major scam. Citi knows about it. I called them. Your credit cards and accounts should be OK. Yes, the e-mail will contain VALID data. They probably got that from credit bureau.

This is sad, annoying and disturbing.

Oh. Please forward e-mail to abuse@chase.com
