BBC Shortwave Service Is No Longer Available In the U.S. (& Has Not Been Since 2001).

I had absolutely no idea that this was indeed the case — and, moreover, has been since July 2001. 18-years ago. WOW.

Another casualty of the Internet.

Yes, in from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s I had fancy (i.e., expensive) Sony SW receivers so I could listen to the BBC on SW — primarily to get cricket scores.

Yes, it is also true that once I could get cricket score on the Interweb (via. say ‘cricinfo‘) I lost interest in fiddling around with SW.

Wow.

I just go myself a small radio from Amazon today so that I can EASILY listen to NPR during my walks. [I am off-crutches after 6-weeks and intend to do a fair amount of walking.] It had SW has a bonus. So, I was looking forward to listening to BBC on SW. Well, I guess that is not going to happen.

P.S., It was cheaper to get this $24 radio than messing around trying to get FM on my Google Pixel 2.

India Should As Of Now Just Stick To Playing IPL, Test Cricket Is Way Out Of Their League.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE.. From cricinfo.com, of course. Where else?

The First Test against England was pretty bad.

But India’s 1st innings in the 2nd Test was something else. Wow. What a joke. And they came with so much swagger.

Murali Vijay. What a clown. Faced 5 balls and missed them all. Yikes. I have had some dreadful innings with a bat, BUT I can’t ever recall anything like that. I would at least put bat to ball.

Yes, of course, given that this is the Indians, this could be a RIGGED match, with billions of dollars being bet. That would be one explanation.

The other is that the Indians have got spoilt by the IPL. Test cricket is way too difficult.

Funny thing is that I do like the Indian team. But, you had to laugh. Otherwise you had no option but to cry.

Century on ODI Debut — from cricinfo.com.

Only the 14th to do so.
Fastest by a MILE. 89 balls.

First there was Aiden Markram just under a year ago. And now Reeza Hendricks as Markram’s replacement. Never heard of him until today. But, boy was I impressed. 4 off his first ball. He was special.

Ironic that he replaced Aiden Markram. I am GLAD that dropped Markram. He was getting to be an embarrassment! Shame. But, that is cricket. I hope he finds his form again.

In the meantime if Reeza Hendricks can maintain his. Shame he got out, as so many do, right after the milestone. Always makes me wonder.

Well, looking forward to the 4th ODI. He will, of course, play, barring injury.

South Africa’s Aiden Markram Must Break The Bad Habit Of Getting Out In The 90s!

by Anura Guruge

He got out, AGAIN, in the 90s — 94 to be precise — in the 2nd Test against India.

5th Test match and he has been out in the 90s TWICE. That has to be a record.

He has also scored 2 centuries already and set a record doing that — 1st South African to score two centuries in his first three Tests.

He passed 500 Test runs during this innings of 94. 5th Test match — 500 runs (and he has another Innings). That is impressive.

He is an attractive and talented player. I spotted that the first time I saw.

Yes, I cried when he missed his first century — on debut.

Today was different. This was his fault. Slightly loose shot.

Aaaahhhh!

His parents were crushed. They zoomed in on them — multiple times. Father looks NOTHING like him. Wow. The difference.

South Africa’s Nail-Biting Win Against India, In The 1st Test Match, Made My Day!

by Anura Guruge

From Cricinfo.com, of course. Click here for coverage.

What a 4th day, after the 3rd was lost, completely, to rain.

I like the South African team — as I can plainly be seen by posts such as this. I love their genuine camaraderie, that transcends color, culture and religion. Nelson would be so proud and happy of this team. There is no other team in the World, right now, that has this level of seamless integration and bonding. Always a joy to see them.

When India skittled them out for 130 with just a 207-run lead I was SURE that Virat Kohli and his boys will score that with ease. They had a day and a half to do so.

I, however, was hoping that South Africa might fight back and OH BOY, did they.

It was so exciting and tense. Wow. Really enjoyed it.

South African Quinton de Kock’s 168* Against Bangladesh In The 1st ODI Was Brilliant. Scintillating.

by Anura Guruge

From ‘cricinfo.com’ at espncricinfo.com/southafrica/ Click to ENLARGE and study here.

I have been publicly raving about young Quinton de Kock for over 2-years now. From the first time I saw him, in an ODI, I recognized at once, that he was a rare talent — and it did not require any genius on my part to do so. This ‘boy’ exudes class, confidence and competence. He can bat and his wicket-keeping is pretty special too. South Africa is very lucky to have him.

His innings, with my other perennial South African favorite, Hashim Amla, was amazing. They both paced themselves so well. Quinton, one way or another, got most of the strike, 145 balls to Hashim’s 112. I don’t think Hashim minds. Now that he is getting older I get the feeling he is quite content to accumulate runs, slowly, and keep his end up.

Before we even got to the halfway mark of the South African innings I kind of felt that this was going to be a 10-wicket victory — as it was. But, they did drop Quinton, on the boundary, right at the end when they only needed like 6 more runs. That would have been sad. But, luck prevailed.

I Cried When South African Aiden Markram Got Run-Out On 97 Missing His ‘Hundred On Debut’!

90s on Debut — from cricinfo.com.

Note my all-time favorite, Gordon Greenidge, after whom my son is named,
got 93 in the FIRST innings.

Gordon Greenidge, to his credit scored 103 in the SECOND innings,
as such still qualifying for ‘Hundred on Debut’.

What a crying shame and it did make me cry.

I had only seen Aiden Markram once and I had already (i.e., last night) sung his praises — in print.

‘Hundred on Debut’ is quite a landmark and you only get TWO chances, ever, to do it — your 1st innings and the 2nd (if you get one).

As you can see MY MAN Gordon did succeed in the second innings — and in the process scored exactly 200 runs in the match.

There is a chance that Aiden Markram, even IF he gets a 2nd innings, might not have enough time to compile a hundred. It will take quite a bit of work on the part of Bangladesh even to get South Africa to bat again!

I still can’t make up my mind as to who was at fault. Markram was a long way up the pitch.

Such a shame. He took it well. Very mature. I am impressed. This boy is going to go far.

That Dean Elgar THEN managed to get out on 199 is pretty ironic. Do not feel too bad for him. 199 is, by any means, quite an INNINGS.

Where Does South Africa Find Batting Talent Such As Aiden Markram?

This might be sacrilegious to say so,
BUT he reminds me of Barry Richards!

Barry Richards, in his glory.

I saw him for the first time today, opening for South Africa in the Test match against Bangladesh. Wow. He oozes class! Not even 23-years old.

A few years ago it was Quinton de Kock. He is now one of my FAVORITE cricketers. Now  Aiden Markram.

South Africa is blessed. Hashim AmlaAB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy … and that is without mentioning the likes of David Miller. These guys can bat — bat seriously. What a batting unit.

As with Quinton de Kock, mark my word. Aiden Markram is going places.

P.S., I knew Barry Richards. Saw a LOT of him, playing for Hampshire between 1975 – 1979. I was a Hants. Cricket Club member during that time, and lucky enough to have Barry and Gordon Greenidge open for Hampshire.

Even by Sri Lanka’s often erratic standards this was quite a thrashing.

8 wickets and 8.5 overs to spare. It wasn’t even close. They were not even in the same league.

Lost the series too.

Then it occurred to me … and, as ever, I am the first to admit it. I am slow on the uptake. Always have been.

The Sri Lankan players, used to having Christmas off, irrespective of whether they worship their balls or not
(or even worse try to French kiss their bats) as you can often see on TV, must have decided to throw the match
— call it a day early.

He puts the ball on the ground and worships it too. I gag each and every time!

He puts the ball on the ground and worships it too. I gag each and every time!

Nearly 9 overs short. That is like 45 minutes

Bravo to them. Well they showed that they have balls.

But, to be fair, it was probably done within the wider more
institutionalized framework of match fixing!

So that was a bonus for many.

Oh, dear … what has the world come to?

The Pakistani’s, who don’t celebrate Christmas, nonetheless got a wonderful Christmas present.
No wonder they are prancing around.

It is just NOT cricket.

Sri Lanka, contrary to what the misguided, delusional Buddhist fundamentalists might claim, is still a multicultural, multireligious country with even a Catholic cardinal.

Sri Lanka has always celebrated Christmas. Acting like uncivilized heathens is so unbecoming.

They deserved to be thrashed in every sense of the word for this affront to the norms.

The President should be ashamed, groveling to the cardinal and pope one minute, then permitting this. Am I glad I am not Sri Lankan (other than by the accident of birth).
