I, per my “eagle eyes” reputation, do not miss these things. But, did not know who had died because that was not included in the commentary snippets in the highlights package. I had assumed it must be an ex-player and wondered if it would be one that I knew.

So, I had to Google. A player’s father-in-law! Hhmmm. I guess it is up to them — and to be fair Tim Paine is playing, as the wicketkeeper no less.

Anywho. Now we know.

Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, ‘Boom-Boom’, Making the sign of the ‘T’ — requesting a TV replay.

They were talking about Nadal’s latest $690,000 (Rolex-built) watch this morning on CNBC and it got me on one of my pet peeves.

I do not understand why sportsmen (and for that matter sports women) feel that they need to wear a watch WHEN they are in the middle PLAYING?

Have no problem whatsoever about them wearing watches or whatever when they are not playing. Hey, I like watches and tend to wear by 25 year old Rolex quite a bit.

But, why does Nadal need a watch when he is on court. The courts that he plays on have plenty of watches and digital scoreboards. Look up or sideways and he has all the timing data he needs.

Amazes me even more when I see International cricketers, while fielding, wearing big clunky watches. I think it makes them look stupid!

All International cricket venues have plenty of readily visible clocks. That is part and parcel of the game. We need to know when lunch is … we need to know when it will be tea. So cricket grounds have clocks. They are sighted so that they can be easily seen.

A player in the middle will always have ready access to one or more clocks. IF they can’t see ‘the clock’ they should not be out there — because they must be blind as a bat!

So, I don’t get it. Seems like a puerile affectation.
