The ‘Hop’, Art Center At ‘Dartmouth College’, Is Getting Quite Provocative & Creative With Its Post-COVID Marketing.

by Anura Guruge

I got this e-mail, with the above image, on Thursday. Hhhmm. I have been, for over 20-years, a regular & enthusiastic patron of the ‘Hop’. I had, however, never seen a show that would have come close to this. They succeeded. They got me to read the e-mail. Smile.

NO. They are not promoting THAT dance show! No, it is NOT even mentioned. So, I have NO clue as to what it is.

The e-mail was just to give me a heads up that LIVE shows are about to begin.

That is cool. I am glad. I am glad for I as well as for all the good folks at the Hop. Great crew.

Just the picture amused I. You know what they say & it is so, so true. ” … sells”!

Netflix “The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind” (2019) Movie — Inspiring & Invigorating, With A New Hampshire Connection To Boo.

True story. Click to ENLARGE & read here. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Kamkwamba

Quite the story. Netflix had been trying to get me to watch it for weeks. But, I kept on ignoring the suggestion thinking that it would be trite — a glorified documentary. I was wrong. It proved to be QUITE the movie. Extremely inspirational. Wow. Talk about grit & graft to overcome adversity.

Also made me realized, acutely, that even though I grew up in a third-world country, I have NEVER had to face or experience long-term hunger, let alone starvation. Seeing a pet dog die of malnutrition is distressing.

I loved this movie. Knew it was a true-story. Not 100% sure whether he really used a bicycle dynamo as his first generator. I remember those dynamos from MY youth 50-years ago. Rugged & reliable but I do not think they produce that much power.

So, what is the New Hampshire connection. He attended Dartmouth. Wow. I am proud.

Yes, another “thinking-person’s” movie. In the end it is definitely a feel-good movie. Well, the title tells it all — & it is set in a poor African country. That is all you need to know in order to decide whether this might be YOUR kind of movie. I hope it is.

Thank YOU, Netflix.

2020 Chinese New Year, The HOP At Dartmouth (NH) Also Offering Free Event — A Concert.

by Anura Guruge

Click here for the HOP events page listing.

This should be quite the event. I am glad that they are doing it. This is the first time I have seen the HOP do an event for Chinese New Year — BUT, I could very well have missed them.

Now, as you know the UNH is also doing a free event which I have already talked about. That is this. So, you now have two free events. Wow.

I Was Blatantly Racially Profiled By ‘Dartmouth Hitchcock (Concord)’ Today!

by Anura Guruge

I could NOT believe it. At registration, at the front, the receptionist asked me, point-blank: “Are you a U.S. citizen?”

I had presented her my valid N.H. driver’s license WITH REAL ID (which states that I have been fully vetted) & my Humana Advantage card that showed that I was on MediCare. Moreover, I had been a registered patient there of 12-years! I was just there to get a pneumonia shot — by appointment, after having got my flu shot a few weeks ago.

They have never previously asked whether I was a U.S. citizen.

What does citizenship have to do with Dartmouth ‘bloody’ Hitchcock?

I asked her that. She just shrugged her shoulder.

This is NOT right.

I am NOT going to let this one pass.

This was the final straw with the bunch of clowns at Dartmouth ‘bloody’ Hitchcock — Concord.

They have screwed me by overcharging $1,600 (out-of-pocket) for a colonoscopy.

Click to access my post from 10-years ago.

They nearly KILLED me by not giving me the treatment I needed.

Click to access my post from 6-years ago.

They treated my daughter since she was born BUT thought she was a BOY when her gender was never in question.

That is it. I am DONE.

I have already reported them to the ACLU and Senator Maggie Hassan. And I have just started.

They can’t be allowed to carry on.

Bloody Dartmouth Bloody Hitchcock.

And they are NOT even ASSOCIATED with Dartmouth Hitchcock in Hanover. They have JUST bought the rights to use the name. You didn’t know that did you?

‘Revels North’ (Lebanon, NH) Christmas Revels Is This Weekend, December 21 — 23, 2019.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access their Website.

I got hooked on ‘Revels‘, over 20-years ago, THANKS to ‘Revels North‘ (those days (actually until quite recently) at the HOP @ Dartmouth). We used to make a pilgrimage to Dartmouth, every December, to see ‘Revels’. Towards the end I started making a point of getting us front row seats. Became a tradition. Enjoying ‘Revels North’ from the front row. Saw some INCREDIBLE shows with them. Thank YOU ‘Revels North’.

We enjoyed ‘Revels’ so much that I started looking around for other shows and discovered the ‘mothership’ — ‘Revels’ in Cambridge. We started going to BOTH. That was a blast.

Going to Cambridge is quite a trip for us, especially in mid-December, in the dark, with all the rush-hour traffic. So, during the last few years we decided that one 90+ minute trip (oneway), just ahead of Christmas, for ‘Revels’, was enough. So, I have to confess, we sacrificed ‘Revels North’ and started going exclusively to Cambridge. I feel bad and guilty. ‘Revels North’ is a GREAT outfit.

Their shows are this coming weekend. We, however, are going to Cambridge, this week. Have front row — balcony seats.

But, I wanted you to know about ‘Revels North’. Check them out. You will enjoy their show and find it very rewarding.

Check out this video. It does show SOME of the
mind blowing trampoline act (towards the middle).

Click image to access the HOP listing.

I think you might have worked out from my title that I was impressed. Actually, I was beyond impressed. These 8 ‘kids’ (and they are YOUNG and there was only 8 that were on stage) redefined brilliance and I am not exaggerating or kidding. Wow. Wow. Wow.

Their talent, individually, collectively & synergistically is so awesome that it is humbling.

We go to a LOT of circuses — at least once a year, and we try to go to the BIG ones, whenever we can, like ‘Cirque du Soleil‘ and ‘Barnum & Bailey’. Just do a search on this blog. So, we have seen a lot of acts over the years. And these, by these 8, were UP there — way up there. And as you can see from the program (above) four of them have been with ‘du Soleil‘.

Their ‘vertical’ trampoline act is the BEST we have seen and we have seen it done by ‘du Soleil’, ‘Barnum & Bailey’ and others. The best, by far. They were brilliant.

The juggling. Out-of-this-world.

The magical piano player who did so much and was so integral to all the acts. Amazing. What it says in the program is TRUE. A generational talent! The whole piano ‘thing’ is very clever and cute. It is one of their props. It is no ordinary piano. It has a lot of electronics and an umbilical cord that is pretty hefty. I found this for you on YouTube. It gives you a glimpse of his talents but just a glimpse.

It is a proper circus. They do multiple, diverse acts and per circus lore even throw in a comedy, clown skit between the main acts. Very clever and very cute.

In addition to ‘brilliant’, ‘astounding’, ‘amazing’ a couple of other words that invariably come to mind are ‘cute’, ‘clever’, ‘ballet-like’.

There was only one disappointment — it was just 1-hour long! Halfway through I suspected that this would be the case. Nonetheless, it was kind of upsetting to be proved right. Given the amount of energy they expend they couldn’t, realistically, have stretched it out to 2-hours. But, they have to see how they can make that happen — with an intermission to break it up.

That said, HIGHLY, highly, highly recommended with no caveats. If you can catch them, do not forgo the opportunity. You will be amply rewarded.

I Am Devastated That Dear Oliver Mtukudzi Is Dead; He Was My Age — I Will Miss Him.

Click to access this post. You should at least skim through this.

On my 90-minute walk this morning, dear, beloved Oliver Mtukudzi came to mind. I was going through the holiday-related events coming up over the next few weeks and remembered the ‘circus‘ I got tickets to at the Dartmouth HOP. It then came to mind that one of the last concerts we had been to at the HOP was that of Oliver Mtukudzi. And what a night that had been. I got to talk to him. I talked to him about cricket.

I also realized that I haven’t listened to Oliver in some time. These days, when I am at my PC, I mainly listen to music, which is NOT OFTEN, via YouTube. Much easier than any other option at my disposal. As I mention in one of the two posts cited above, though we have hundreds of CDs in this house, I only have 10 (one more since that post) in my office, and two of them happened to be by Oliver! That alone says something.

So, I invoked YouTube and banged in ‘oliver mtukudzi‘. The usual list came up and I, as I knew I would, started off with ‘Neria’. That was so, so GOOD. Ah, ah, ‘Neria’.

I then started looking at the YouTube list when I saw: “The best of Oliver Tuku Mtukudzi. Tribute“.

Ah? ‘Tribue’. Ah? I had a horrible feeling what that signified. And, alas, I was right. Damn. I wish I was wrong (as I am most of the time).

Diabetes. 66.

That could be I. Oh, Oliver. Why?

He was a GREAT MAN. He was GOOD MAN. He was MAN that gave so many joy.

Oliver Mtukudzi was A MAN.

‘Cirque FLIP Fabrique — Blizzard’: We Got Tickets To See Them At The ‘HOP’, Dartmouth.

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access the HOP listing.

Click to access their Website.

We like circuses. I don’t think you can go to enough. This year, as I far as I can recall, we have only been to one — and that was the delightful ‘Circus Smirkus‘, in Wolfeboro, in August.

Then today, we got a postcard from the HOP (at Dartmouth) advertising this circus. We haven’t been to the HOP in a longtime and there used to be a time when we used to go to 4 – 6 shows a year! So, this was an opportunity to rectify things.

Checked them out on the Web. Canadian and we know that Canada is now the home of world class circuses — starting with Cirque du Soleil. Six years ago we saw another AMAZING Canadian circus — i.e., CIRQUE ALFONSE ‘Timber’ — at the HOP. That was good. So, we are hoping that this might follow in the footsteps.

Last year, at Christmas, we went to ‘Cirque Dreams Holidaze’. That was OK but wasn’t worth writing home about. They are actually back in Manchester again this year but we decided to give them a miss. Then this came up.

We like Dartmouth, we like the HOP. So, this should be fun.

Of course I will keep you posted. SMILE.

Meredith [N.H.] — The Increasingly Impressive Art, Including Sculpture Walk.

by Anura Guruge

NO post-processing whatsoever.

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Attribution WILL be enforced.

I kid you NOT, Meredith (New Hampshire) is getting more beautiful and chic by the month. Each time I visit, which these days is about few times a year, Meredith has more art, more artistic stores and just a air of elegant sophistication. Wow. I lived in Meredith 1997 to 1999. It was nice then, on the upswing BUT nothing like it is now. If it was, I would never have moved.

Hands down, Meredith is NOW the MOST ATTRACTIVE of the Lake Winnipesaukee towns — Wolfeboro nowhere close. Alton, where I live, has to be the distant last.

But, I will go further. Meredith looks even better than Dartmouth or Portsmouth.

If you have not been of late, PLEASE do yourself a favor (and treat) and visit.

Eat at Giuseppe’s as we always do — and, of course, did today.
