Please Join Me In Celebrating The Wonderful Holiday Of ‘Saturnalia’ — The Precursor To Christmas.

by Anura Guruge

saturnfhghf

IF you are fortunate enough to be a Born-Again, Reformed Heathen, as am I, SaturnaliaDies Natalis Solis Invicti are very important & significant holidays.

Saturnalia is a holiday where ALL conventions are expected to be thrown out of the window. It is a holiday to be enjoyed with gusto.

So, I wish you, from the bottom of my very pagan heart a rollicking, merry, joyous, licentious Saturnalia (December 17 – 23) & Dies Natalis Solis (December 25).

Merry Christmas TOO! I don’t miss that either. And Happy Chanukah (Hanukkah).

P.S., This painting, kind of synonymous with Saturnalia, is by French artist, William Adolphe Bouguereau (William Bouguereau) (1825-1905) and is titled La Jeunesse de Bacchus (The Youth of Bacchus). Bacchus/Dionysus, my IDOL, the God of the vine, grape harvest, winemaking, wine, ritual madness, religious ecstasy and theatre.

There will be a fair amount of interest this year since Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night, falls on Christmas Eve.

That is special. Only the 4th time it has fallen on Christmas Even since 1900.

Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night can also fall on Christmas Day, as it did in 2005 and will again in 2024.

But, given the 8-day span of Chanukah/Hanukkah this ‘Chrismukkah’ conjunction can happen any time Chanukah/Hanukkah falls December 18th and Christmas day.

This has happened 33 times since 1900 to 2016: 1902, 1905, 1908, 1910, 1913, 1916, 1921, 1924, 1927, 1932, 1935, 1940, 1943, 1946, 1951, 1954, 1959, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011 & 2016.

It will happen 20 times between next year and 2099: 2019, 2022, 2024, 2027, 2030, 2035, 2038, 2046, 2049, 2054, 2057, 2065, 2068, 2073, 2076, 2084, 2087, 2092, 2095 & 2098.

You don’t have to wait long. Next one is in but 3 years! 2019.

The first night of Chanukah/Hanukkah falling on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day does NOT happen that often.

That it happens on Christmas Eve this year is rather special. Only the 4th time since 1900!

Chanukah/Hanukkah did fall on Christmas Day 11 years ago.

It will again in 2024. So a 19 year gap.

Also, only four times, so far, since 1900.

Chanukah (Hanukkah) 2016 Will Begin (With First Candle) At Sundown On December 24th — Christmas Eve.

by Anura Guruge

Yes, it is definite.

First first Menorah candle will be lit the evening of December 24, 2016 — Christmas Eve.

[First full day of Chanukah (Hanukkah) 2016 will be Christmas Day — but that is Day #2 in terms of Menorah candles.]

Refer to this November 23, 2016 post for more background.

When Is Hanukkah (Chanukah) 2016 — December 24th or December 25th (Christmas)?

by Anura Guruge

It is the adjacency to Christmas that makes this rather important —
Hanukkah not falling on Christmas day that often.

You would think that there would be NO discrepancy.

But, there is. As you will see.

And yes, I understand that Jewish holidays start at sundown where a ‘day’, per the ‘European’ calendar/convention, starts at midnight. And with Hanukkah there is the ‘first day’ — though that is when the first candle is lit. So, it would not, and should not, be taken as the next day.

And we do have a definitive answer
(as of Friday, November 25, 2016) thanks to

Chani Benjaminson of Chabad.org (referenced below).

“The Jewish day begins the night before, so while the first day of Chanukkah 2016 will be on the 25th, the first night is the 24th and that’s when the first Menorah candle will be lit. See this handy calendar for more details:

http://www.chabad.org/calendar/view/month.asp?tdate=12/25/2016

Best wishes,

Chani Benjaminson

OK?

chabad.org, that appears quite Jewish, says December 24!

Wikipedia concurs, with December 25 — i.e., Christmas. “Farmer’s Almanac” also says December 24!

Then there is this — “The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism“.
They sound like an outfit that would know this stuff. They claim December 25!

So, I am confused. I just wanted to research when it falls on Christmas. Thanks.

Christmas this year, i.e., 2015, falls on the Full Moon.

This is rather special.
It does NOT happen as often as you think.

IF you have an exceptional memory for matters such as this you may believe that you actually remember this happening not that long ago — say 2004, 11 years ago. Actually the Full Moon in 2004 was on Boxing Day, i.e., December 26th, rather than the 25th.

The last time Christmas was on the Full Moon was in 1977.

Statistically a full moon will fall on a specific date, in this case Christmas, every 18.61 years. But Leap Years messes this up. Hence the 38 year gap in this case (essentially twice the ’19’ year gap).

The next Christmas on a Full Moon will be in 2034 — 19 years from now. Next one will be 2053.

So this is SPECIAL. Enjoy.
