Kudos To ‘Atoll’ For The Very Fine (Double-Boxed) Packaging Of Their Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Boards.

by Anura Guruge

I was very happy with how my 11′ Atoll Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board arrived in the mail today.

For a start it was DOUBLE-BOXED. Kudos. The outside box had a ding on it and I had vision of a punctured board. Nothing to worry about. The second box (the white one) was untouched. So, everything inside was pristine. I am so glad.

Very well packed. Everything in its place and easy to take out.

Everything as promised.

I was glad. Nothing worse that having to try and get missing parts.

So far, Atoll really has surpassed expectations. I hope to keep it that way.

Wish me luck.

Our Mail In Alton, N.H., Was Delivered At 8:05 PM By The USPS Mailman!

by Anura Guruge

I am not complaining. I feel BAD for our mailman — who I consider a friend. He still had about 3-hours of delivery ahead of him! That meant he wouldn’t get home till close to midnight. That is crazy.

Yes, yes, yes. I know him. I know him well. Yes, he doesn’t normally finish his round till 7 or 8pm, but even for him this was LATE.

Appears that another Alton delivery person walked-out at 1pm. ‘Quit’ is what I was told.

We have had a lot of turnover.

I was expecting some copies of my latest meditation book, from Amazon, in the mail. Amazon said it was out for delivery. We had gone out for dinner and didn’t get back till 8pm. I checked the mailbox. No mail. So, I assumed my books had been delayed till the next day. Then I was out, with the dogs when I saw the headlights of the Jeep approaching. I knew immediately who it was. We talked. I told him to be ‘careful’. It is a tricky route — at night.

I hope they fix whatever the issues are at the Post Office. Nice crew — the last time I visited.

Samsung 24.5 Cu. Ft. Side-By-Side Refrigerator Stops Making Ice After 4-Months!

by Anura Guruge

We bought this Samsung 24.5 Cu. Ft. Side-By-Side Refrigerator, Model RS25H5111BC, from Best Buy (Concord, NH), and had it delivered and installed by them. The delivery was impressive and when they noticed that one of the doors was dented the delivery guys arranged to have a new door to replace that. That happened in about 2 weeks. So we were happy with all of that.

Then about four (maybe six) weeks ago, around the end of July 2017, it suddenly stopped making ice. Deanna did all the things you are supposed to do. She read the instructions, scoured the Internet and checked YouTube. She discovered it had ice build up on the mechanical part which releases the ice cubes. She defrosted the ice maker and it was fine for awhile longer until it happened again. After that nothing — maybe 3 ice cubes in 24-hours.

Called Best Buy. They were not interested. They told Deanna to call Samsung. She did. They said they would schedule a technician to make a call. We made an appointment. No technician BUT plenty of automated calls asking how the technician did!

Called Samsung again on Friday. They said a technician would call by Tuesday. It is Wednesday now.

Just giving you a heads up.

I Had No Idea That They Delivered Large Refrigerator/Freezers Using Just Shoulder Harnesses.

Click pictures to ENLARGE.

Attribution WILL be enforced.

This was the Samsung, from Best Buy, we had delivered — to replace a 13 month old GE. Click to ENLARGE. 289 pounds.

I can’t honestly remember the last time I saw a refrigerator being delivered. Can’t even remember the last time I bought one or have one that needed replacing. All the many houses I have bought over the years came with appliances.

Ditto for this current house which we bought 10 years and 1 month ago.

Yes, 10 years and 1 month ago — and last week the GE Fridge/Freezer decided that it was time for its planned obsolescence. I have since discovered that the lifespan of a ‘modern’ fridge is 8 – 10 years, whereas older ones would last 30 years or more. That would explain why I can’t remember ever buying a new fridge.

I wondered how they were going to take out the old GE (for a $15 fee) and bring in the new 289 pound Samsung.

I had visions of dollies and ramps such that those used by movers.

When I didn’t see a dolly I actually JOKED without ever realizing how close I would be by saying: “what are you going to do, throw it on your back and carry it in?” He replied: “yep, pretty much”.

And he wasn’t joking.

Never seen anything like this. Damn impressive.

But I am NOT sure whether it is safe, wise or advisable.

We also learned that they get no special training as such about avoiding back injury and other damage.

I also learned that they might do 6 such deliveries a day.

Yes, definitely quicker and easier than using a dolly, BUT I can see the potential for disaster.

I am surprised that this is permitted. They are taking quite the risk.

First It Was Sarongs, Now It Is Sarees, Delivered In Sri Lanka, By Kapruka.com

by Anura Guruge

Click to access ‘Kapruka.com’.

Twelve or thirteen years ago when I first started using Kapruka it was mainly cakes — made and delivered in Sri Lanka.

Now they have branched out to all sorts of stuff and even trying out a fledgling ‘delivery in U.S.A.‘ service.

Noticed, in an e-mail from them that I received yesterday, that the latest offering seems to be sarees (also spelt ‘saris’). So I thought I would share it with you. Just in case you are wondering such bright, bold colors and designs are not unusual.

Amazon Delivery Is Running The U.S. Postal System (USPS) Ragged.

by Anura Guruge

If you are dedicated Amazon shopper, as I am, you will, no doubt, have noticed BIG changes in Amazon’s shipping habits as of December 26, 2015 — yes, the day after Christmas. And this is irrespective of whether you are a Prime Member or not, though Prime Members may have noticed that we went through a couple of months, at the start of 2016, when Amazon was both leary and cute about initially committing to the ‘Shipping Date’ — since 2-day shipping ONLY starts as of when the product was shipped, as opposed to ordered.

The BIGGEST change, and it is very obvious, is that poor UPS, was no longer the preferred carrier. Deliveries by UPS plummeted. However, chatting with my UPS drivers (which I habitually do) we have come to the conclusion that Amazon still uses UPS for all deliveries that contain (fire hazard) Lithium batteries (which means most modern digital cameras).

Much of what was delivered by UPS is now coming via USPS. That is good and bad. The good part is that you now have Saturday deliveries. That is nice. UPS (typically) does not work on Saturdays other than around Christmas.

Heavy stuff is sent via FedEx and they too will deliver on Saturdays.

But handling the UPSURGE in Amazon packages appears to be overwhelming the Postal Service — particularly around here. On Saturday we had TWO (2) USPS deliveries. One at the normal time (~1:30pm) for our usual mail and one small Amazon package. Then our regular postman arrived at 4pm — on a Saturday — with a large ‘ShopVac’ vacuum cleaner we had ordered!

Then today, Monday, we had a delivery at 7am by USPS. 7am! Suffice to say that that was without the other mail. So we had another delivery around 1pm.

It has to be wreaking havoc at the USPS.

My UPS driver just told me (given I had a delivery from ‘Home Depot’) that he saw our regular USPS mailman driving out of the Alton Post Office this morning with a LARGE Amazon package strapped to his ROOF!

This is getting hilarious. So just a heads up. Oh! Amazon did use UPS last week to handle the extra volume due to the July 12 ‘Prime Day‘.

As Ever Delectable Easter Cakes For Sri Lanka By ‘Kapruka’.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and goggle here. Access Kapruka at: kapruka.com

Given that I have been a very good customer for well over a decade I get regular e-mail updates from Kapruka to try and tempt me.

I always like looking at their cakes and over the years have shared pictures of them with you. If I could I would share actual cakes with you too but Kapruka cakes are ONLY available for delivery in Sri Lanka.

These cakes remind me of my youth in Ceylon (before it became Sri Lanka in the 1970s). Ceylon, thanks to the British influence, has been famous for its elaborate and rich cakes for years. My adoptive mother made cakes that make these Kapruka cakes, fancy as they be, look pedestrian. She would make, out of cake, large 3D, upright figures.

But enjoy.

Kapruka JUST started a U.S. delivery service BUT that does not cover cakes!

Sri Lanka Product Delivery Whiz ‘Kapruka’ Starts Fledgling U.S. Delivery Service.

by Anura Guruge

I have been urging Kapruka, who I have used, very successfully for over 14 years, to start this for years. So I am glad. Very early. Very limited products and I appreciate that they can’t offer the fancy Sri Lankan cakes, in the U.S., at reasonable prices. But a good start.

My Sinhalese is still good enough for me to know that ‘lokubox’ means ‘Big Box’ — ‘Loku’ being ‘big’ (as I know from ‘Loku Amma’ as in ‘big mother’ to refer to elder aunties, i.e., mother’s older, or oldest, sister(s).

Amazon Sends Us 3 ‘Barbie Collector 2015 Holiday Dolls’ That We Did NOT Order!

Click to ENLARGE. Three (3) “Barbie Collector 2015 Holiday Dolls” and two vials of concentrated ‘perfume’. In the box they arrived in.

Amazon listing, from a few minutes ago, for the Barbie. Yes, there is a non-holiday one for $25. But we got the Holiday ones as you can see from the box. Search on “Barbie Collector 2015 Holiday Doll” on Amazon for listing. Click to ENLARGE.

I won’t deny it. We do a LOT of our shopping, online, on Amazon. We have Prime and as such there is no shipping. So it is more convenient than driving to Walmart in Rochester or Concord.

On average, year round, we probably get one Amazon shipment a week, but most of the time we get 2, 3, 4 or 5 deliveries a week! We are BEST of friends with our UPS driver. Now that it is Christmas, and given that I do 100% of all my Christmas shopping online (and I have a LOT of shopping to do), we had 5 LARGE boxes delivered by UPS (and two small ones by USPS). [[Oh. I do own Amazon shares. SMILE. So in away I don’t mind spending at Amazon. SMILE.]

I was EXPECTING 4 large boxes BUT not a 5th. Plus I check my Amazon orders, each ‘morning’ (around 1 am before I go to bed), to see what is being delivered that day. The 5th box was also badly taped. I opened it. You see the picture above.

Deanna was there. I was a bit taken back. I had NOT ordered these Barbies. Neither had Deanna. Yes, Deanna and the kids (who all know my Amazon password) put items in my shopping cart and I just order them. But I had NOT ordered these Barbies. We thought it might have been one of the kids — though they would have to have done it through one of our accounts AND this box was CLEARLY addressed to me. We also KNEW that it could NOT have been a present (say from Teischan’s brother) BECAUSE nobody would send 3 of the SAME Barbie (not even my son).

Then came the FEAR that we had been scammed. Ran upstairs and checked all the important credit cards and my Amazon order record again. NADA.

‘Called up’ (well they called me per the ‘Call Back’ feature) Amazon at the Call Center in Manila, Philippines. Got a young man who was quite good. THE ONLY identification on the box was the UPS Tracking Number. So that was all we could go by. I tracked it on UPS as did he.

We were on the phone for 40 minutes with two holds.

Amazon HAD NO RECORD, whatsoever, of this shipment!

It was eventually determined that an UPS Shipping Label created for one of my other boxes had been put on this box. OK.

But here is the crazy thing that even THEY couldn’t explain. The label was supposed to go on a box with an Ukulele for Devanee. I got the Ukulele — FINE — in one of the other 4 boxes.

Bottom line they TOLD ME to KEEP IT! Give it to charity. We had already figured out that that would be what happen. Deanna had Googled. Had happened to others and in EACH CASE Amazon had told them to keep the shipment. Not sure I like that as an Amazon shareholder. Whoever was expecting the dolls will get ANOTHER SHIPMENT — just late.

Well as the saying CLEARLY states: “Charity Begins At Home”. So we gave one Barbie to Teischan. She wasn’t that excited. She is into ‘expensive’ American Girl Doll dolls.

The other two DEFINITELY will go to good homes. I am happy.

The message seems to be quite blatant. They want the runway clear for the G5 X — though the G3 X with its 24 to 600mm zoom is in a different class (despite its glaring lack of an electronic view finder).

The Canon discounts are already being reflected at Amazon.

Amazon is also offering the Canon G5 X as of October 23, 2015. That is soon. I will have to make up my mind soon.

Keeping you abreast, as promised.
