This has happened TOO MANY times of late for us to pretend that there is NO connection.

I get grief from women who think I am trying to prevent females from working with Big Cats. Not at all.

I am just stating something that you just cannot overlook. I am NOT an out-and-out expert but I do know some about Big Cats, females and female hormones. I have three daughters and currently live in a house with three females.

Female hormones are powerful entities. And if you THINK that a Big Cat cannot smell changes in female hormones you have been smoking some bad stuff for too long. That is my only point.

I think there is a hormonal connection.

I am familiar with, and have documented 4 instances of such attacks by tigers on female zookeeper, since 2013. They are: Dianna Hanson in California in March 2013, Renee Radziwon of Portland in November 2013, Sarah McClay in the UK in May 2013 and then Rosa King, at Hamerton Zoo Park, also in the UK, in May 2017.

That so many young female zookeepers are being attacked by Big Cats could, of course, all be but an unfortunate coincidence.

BUT, there is something else we should consider. These are all women were still of childbearing age. I think that there is an hormonal connection, something to do with ‘scent’ that tigers and lions can smell. IF you think they can’t smell changes to our scent due to hormonal changes, then you are probably not that familiar even with domestic dogs.

It is something, I think, that should be studied further. We might be able to save some lives of other female zookeepers.

This attack, in Russia, of a female zookeeper by a ‘Big Cat’ is not the first — though she was lucky in that she was NOT killed.

This attack, at the Hamerton Zoo, in the U.K., of a female zookeeper is not the first.

The March death in the U.S. Lots of parallels. Click to access YouTube video.

As I said in my March post when we had the tragic death here, I am not an out-and-out expert but I do know some about tigers, lions and leopards and have a fair amount of experience in animal behavior having had over ten dogs.

My druthers tell me that there seems to be a hormonal connection here which ‘confuses’ the cats. I don’t have to get graphic here but think about it. There are certain smells that are visceral and a cat can’t be blamed for getting ‘confused’.

I really think game ‘preserves’ like this really should institute a rigorous policy when it comes to young ladies and large cats. There should be clearly defined rules that say that young ladies can’t enter an enclosure with big cats under certain circumstances. That is common sense and if anybody thinks otherwise, I would have to say that they are being stupid.

Kind of funny, but I think Hindu temples used to have rules akin to this that precluded women from entering certain parts of the temple if they were …

The Hindus are ‘funny’ about this. They consider it ‘unclean’! Grand scale firewalking is very much a part of Hindu lore. [I thought I have talked about firewalking before, but it appears not.] From the little that I know about firewalking (and I had an uncle, yes my doctor uncle, who walked the fire three times in the early 1960s), one of the factors that would bar you from walking the fire was ‘contact’ with an ‘unclean’ women in the three days prior to the walk. I also think that under special circumstances they could would do a purification ritual to cleanse the person so that they could still walk the fire. My point here is that having a ‘no go’ period would not be unreasonable within the overall context of world cultures.

Here is a YouTube video of firewalking. Not from Sri Lanka. This is a pretty SMALL pit and affair! Click to access. Good quality video.

This is about the most famous firewalking ceremony in Sri Lanka. This is where my uncle walked. Click to read. Best I could find for now. Kind of busy. I will, one day, talk more about firewalking. This is the one thing, I confess, that I cannot truly explain, given that I have seen it first hand, but never at Kataragamma. Thousands would attend. Huge crush. I was little. I didn't like the crush.

I am in no way trying to be crude or prying. I have way to much respect for anybody involved with animal conservation to in any way disrespect them. I am also very fond of big cats.

Though by no means an expert, I do know a fair amount about the behavior and traits of Indian elephants and big cats. Another one of my areas of interests — which in this case has spanned four decades.

I hope somebody knows the answer to the above question. Hopefully the coroner checked.

IF she was, then it should be factored into big cat handling protocol. Female handlers should be told to take extra care or even stay away when they are menstruating.

Obviously there are hormones and smells involved. Google it if you wish, but it is fairly self evident. If a dog will react to it, you can be sure that a BIG male cat will not miss it.

That would explain so much. Hormones on both sides.

That is my hunch on this tragic incident.

I have been VERY IMPRESSED by the father. Bravo. Here is a link. If any of my kids wanted to work with wild life, I would not stop them. You have to do what you want to do. That they shot the lion distresses me and I know that the young lady too, if she was alive, would be distressed. It is a shame.

But, lets try and learn from this.
Somebody better find the answer to MY question.
