Prospect Mountain High School’sBob 319robotics team (which includes Devanee) had another bumper year, winning many titles in competitions far-and-wide, and being the runners-up in their national competition in Detroit — in April.

School is coming to an end, and the seniors like Devanee have graduated. So, this was the end-of-season congratulatory dinner for the team, all of its boosters, supporters, family and friends. It was a good night. Good and plentiful food. Everybody had fun with the night ending with a final demo of this years robot.

Canyon de Chelly: 4-Hour 6-Wheeler (Jeep) Tour With “Thunderbird Lodge Tours”.

by Anura Guruge

In reality this is the ONLY way to see and get to know Canyon de Chelly. Going into the Canyon on horseback is fun (and we have done it twice) but you can’t cover as much ground and, from our experience, the guides that do horseback are not as ‘proficient’ as those on the ‘jeeps’. (But, there could be exceptions and we LUCKED out in that we got ‘Daniel Draper’ who has been doing jeep tours for 29-years). Yes, you can hike down to the ‘White House‘ (which we have also done twice) but you don’t get to see any of the key ‘pictographs‘ (painted) or ‘petroglyphs‘ (carved).

This was the second time I had done a ‘Thunderbird Lodge Tour‘ — albeit 19-years apart. The first time, in 1999, was in the BIGGER Korean-war era Army vehicles they used to have. But, then there was the infamous 2012 roll-over that (eventually) killed two. Everything changed after that — including the ownership of the iconic & historic ‘Thunderbird Lodge’. The 6-wheelers they use now are smaller and newer.

We lucked out — as was invariably the case during this entire 4-day trip to the Canyon (my 4th). Very few people. Most of the time, wherever we would be the only ones there. That is nice and highlights the trademark serenity of the Canyon (which is my favorite part).

We did not book a private tour. We just booked (in the morning) the 4-hour, 4pm (sunset) tour. We were told be there 20-minutes early.

Well it was just the two us, Teischan & I, and that was special. I, with extensive experience with Navajo, soon established a good rapport with Daniel — and I think he enjoyed it too, in that I was not a total novice when it came to the Canyon or the Navajo. We had such a good time that I invited Daniel and his two daughters for dinner with us (at ‘The Junction‘) and they accepted. We had a great time and the two, extremely talented daughters, regaled us with songs after the dinner.

The tour was good. We learnt a lot.

Totally recommend it. Yes, there are other tours. From what I can see they are roughly the same price, i.e., ~$70/person for 3-4 hours. But, I liked the tour we took.

Michelle Wolf’s Entire 19-Minute Monologue At The 2018 “White House Correspondents’ Dinner”.

by Anura Guruge

I liked it. But, it was kind of my humor. Yes, a few that were a bit mean and uncalled for.

I wasn’t familiar with her. She is good. Was rather self-conscious, but that was to be expected. 32-years old.

I hope the media is kind to her tomorrow. As she said at the start ‘she has no agenda’.

But, if you haven’t seen it, you really must watch the whole video.

President Trump Should NOT Have Been Permitted To Hold A Dinner At Ever So Historic ‘Mount Vernon’.

by Anura Guruge

Click to access CNN original. Google for more.

Google “JFK Mount Vernon” for lots of stuff about this historic dinner — way back in 1961.

There has to be limits. It is bad enough that he is in the White House, but to let him desecrate lovely, historic ‘Mount Vernon‘. That is bad, that is sad.

While the ‘State Dinner’ is at the White House on Tuesday, all of us who know history knows what he is trying to emulate. JFK’s famous State Dinner at ‘Mount Vernon’.

I did not know JFK, but I do know that ‘Donald Trump is NO JFK‘ — other than possibly in one department, and even there I am sure that JFK was better and far classier.

I am a loyal Brit and this bothers ME! I have only been to ‘Mount Vernon’ once, 20-years ago, but I was greatly impressed. Amazing place.

The notion of Trump’s obese self lording it up at ‘Mount Vernon’ makes me feel sad.

Shame.

Fort Start historic site New Hampshire Anura Guruge Sony a7 II

The ‘Fort Stark‘, historic site, just south of Portsmouth, N.H., is one of our closest points to the ocean. As such we tend to visit Ft. Stark fairly often, at least once a year — and looking back at my pictures I realize that we tend to make the first visit in early Spring. So, we lived up to form on Sunday, Easter. We went down to Portsmouth, for Easter, to see ‘Sherlock Gnomes‘ and then have dinner. But, we wanted to visit the ocean before. So, we went to Ft. Stark. It was a bit grey and a tad windy. There were only about 4 other people in total around.

But, it was, as usual, still fun. We walked around. Clamored among the rocks. There was a large ship coming in … and a tug from Portsmouth was going out to meet it. There was a helicopter overhead. We were there for about 45-minutes.

Enjoy.

The 2016 Al Smith Dinner, a HUGE annual New York city fundraiser for Catholic causes (started in 1945), was ‘one for the ages’ with both presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton & Donald Trump, delivering speeches (or ‘roasts’ to be more accurate) — as is a longstanding custom on election years.

This year, i.e., 2017, the keynote speaker was House Speaker, Paul Ryan, a practicing Catholic from Wisconsin, his father of Irish descent. Ryan, as was to be expected, did make some jokes at the expense of Trump. Whether he cleared them with Trump ahead of the dinner has yet to be established. We will have to see if Trump reacts.

But, here is the whole story — so to speak, video and transcript.

‘The Island Inn’, Monhegan Island, Maine — The Ins & Outs (But All Good).

Our Room; #27 on the 2nd floor.

That is Teischan waving at me from the window …

THE VIEW

The interior …

Some of the art.

Staying at ‘The Island Inn‘, on the waterfront of Monhegan Island, Maine, is, without caveats a glorious experience.

We stayed there for two nights, July 26 – 27, 2017, and loved every minute of it.

The setting, the service and the sense of serenity is exceptional.

It is not the most luxurious hotel I have stayed in, but it is hard to beat in terms of what it offers in terms of views, coziness, comfort and laid-backness.

There are really NO negatives about this ‘Inn’. The only thing that maybe they should do better is catering for kids during dinner — but then, again, I have to confess that Teischan is a fussier/pickier eater than most.

As far as I am concerned it is all good. I would go back in an heartbeat. Would love to stay there longer (but at over $400 a night (with taxes) it is quite an indulgence).

It is different, not in a good or bad way, but in interesting ways. So, my goal here is to share with you some of these interesting differences.

>> There are no TVs in the hotel, in the rooms or in the public areas. Yes, no TV. Not a problem, and quite cute — just different. [Yes, they do have TV on the island via satellite.] The Wi-Fi, despite what they say on their Website, is NOT BAD at all, at all. I have had worse, much worse in hotels — just even in the last year. So, you can, of course, check the news and watch the stock market. But, as I was chatting with a few, it must have been strange and difficult on 9/11 (since they did not have Wi-Fi at the time). It appears that that was indeed the case, especially with some New Yorkers staying at the hotel at the time.

>> The rooms have NO balconies. I should have noticed that on the pictures of the Web. But, I didn’t. The view from the window was amazing and they do have a fire escape that you can go upon to take in the scenery and take some pictures.

>> There is no coffee machine or microwave in the room, but they do have complimentary coffee, in the lobby in the morning. I did not see an ironing board, iron or hairdryer BUT I was not looking for them.

>> There are no clocks or alarms in the rooms, and the clocks on the mantle downstairs were ornamental as opposed to timepieces. Time is not meant to be of consequence while you are on the Island, though, alas, this is no longer possible since everybody (I the lone exception) is permanently tethered  to a mobile phone.

>> Our room was big enough, even with three of us and a cot. The attached bathroom was spacious, airy and had a million dollar view. [Some rooms do not have a full bathroom. Given that freshwater is scarce they send most of their laundry, in large hampers, to the mainland, daily. That is expensive.]

>> The included, full breakfast, with à la carte eggs and pancakes, in addition to a very good buffet is excellent. Really good.

>> The dinner menu is sophisticated and the food was wonderful. Would eat there every night. A bit limited for kids.

>> The service is impeccable, extremely friendly and helpful.

>> The freely available water, from their private well, in very congenial glass tumblers was always welcome after hiking around the Island.

So, now you know what to expect. IF you can you really should spend a few nights at this Inn. It will change your life, for the better.
