cnbcdish12121As I posted here, 3 weeks ago, I noticed that the Dish HD picture quality, on our two HD TVs, was far, far, far inferior to that of DirecTV.

Kind of came as a shock since we had switched from DirecTV to Dish — and the two TVs were the same.

I remember, from 2 years ago, that we all noticed that the DirecTV picture quality was ‘infinitely’ better than that of Dish, when we switched from Dish to DirecTV. [Yes, the 2 year contract game.]

I also know that this inferior picture quality has to do with Dish transmitting LESS bandwidth (and as such ‘lines’) for certain channels OUTSIDE of Prime Time. Yes, CNN on Dish at 10pm can look dazzling. The difference is that CNN and all other channels with DirecTV looked that good ALL of the time.

Though I turn on CNBC on TV, as soon as I wake up (around 8:20 am), I don’t really watch it. I listen to it while I read the news on the U.K. “Daily Mail” on my Pad.

This morning I had a real close look at CNBC per Dish.

OMG. OMG.

Its was dreadful. Grainy, out of focus and at a resolution far below SD — never mind HD. Now if I was getting this on an Internet connection you could blame connection speed. But I am getting this BROADCAST down from a satellite. So I can’t control the bandwidth.

This is bad. Very bad. Dish should be ashamed.

directvdish1212We have had Dish HD TV (again) since last Thursday, June 4, 2015. I had finally managed to cancel my accursed and detested DirecTV account on May 31 — 3 weeks ahead of schedule. Just a few minutes ago Deanna took the pre-paid box with the two Genie receivers to the Post Office. No doubt DirecTV will find something wrong with them and charge me for it. What is new. That is all that DirecTV did for 2 years — lied and cheated at each and every turn.

Well, I am back with Dish. Yes, they are no angels either, BUT I don’t think they are as bad as DirecTV. Maybe I will learn.

But we noticed something right away.

Dish Network picture quality is POOR — one could even say downright bad!

Compared to DirecTV HD it is about 50% as good. I guess they just don’t transmit as much bandwidth.

This may come as a surprise but quality of a HD picture is DEPENDENT on how much resolution is transmitted!

Yes, every once in a while I have seen Dish do decent HD — typically at night during prime time. During the day their HD really sucks.

I remember this NOW from when we switched to DirecTV two years ago. Despite all the other problems with DirecTV we all could BUT not notice that the picture quality was stunningly vivid.

Well we are back to ‘so so’ HD with Dish.

No it is NOT our TVs. We still get BRILLIANT HD with the Roku 3 when watching Amazon Prime. Teischan right now is watching “Mansfield Park” on Amazon and the picture quality is worth writing home about. [Plus we now have DEDICATED 15Mbps, wired, TDS Internet to the Roku! More on that later.]

But ONE good thing on the Dish Hopper. So far I have NOT encountered ANY sound loss. That is good.

But I have to say. WOW. Picture quality of Dish is atrocious. Good job we don’t watch much Dish. 85% of our TV viewing is now on the Roku. I got Dish primarily so that I can have 24×7 CNN and CNBC.

This, the last weekend of May, has been quite the weekend for us — by design. June, with June 27 Deanna’s birthday, tends to be a ‘landmark’ month for us. As it happened, couple of key things were coming to their expiration in June 2015.

One was the detested DirecTV two-year contract that was coming to an end on June 21, 2015. The other was the 3-year, 36,000 mile KIA Sportage lease which we signed for on Deanna’s birthday 3 years ago and as such was terminating on June 27, 2015.

With BOTH DirecTV and KIA I wanted to terminate AHEAD of the expiration, albeit for different reasons. I just detested DirecTV and wanted OUT as soon as possible. And that I managed after 4 phone calls and one chat session.

Leased vehicles in New Hampshire have arbitrary registration ‘months’ independent of the birthday of the leasee — whereas with vehicles you purchase the registration month is keyed to the owner’s birthday. The KIA Lease registration month — which also ties into the State inspection month — is May. So the KIA registration/inspection were both expiring today, May 31.

I was in no mood to register the KIA for 3 weeks and go through an inspection. Just was not worth it. Was easier and cheaper just to return it 3 weeks early. The KIA lease terms permit this. you can return a lease 28 days ahead of expiration. So that is what I did.

All worked out.

Returning the KIA, to Autoserv Belmont, was a pleasure and joy.

The Sales manager at KIA Autoserv Belmont, Tim Paradis, is ‘A-OK’!

IF I had met him before I might have leased another KIA. He was good. Very personable, likeable … HONEST guy. Trust me. I, in my old age, an impeccable judge of character. Tim Paradis was good. We liked him (even before we discovered that he likes Jaguars and has owned some). IF you want a car go see Tim at Autoserv Belmont.

I have nothing against KIA (or for that matter Hyundai) vehicles. Mechanically and functionally they are ultra-reliable and rugged. Never had a single problem with the KIA — but we also only drove it for 28,500 miles. Very reliable and dependable. All of my issues are with the people and the Company. Tim Paradis was a pleasant exception. I guess KIA folks are under huge pressure to perform and as such end up acting weird — and that is being polite.

As I suspected would happen (I knowing how leasing works) Autoserv promptly BOUGHT the car from KIA Lease when we returned it. That was a given with the low milage. To be fair they got a bargain. Even I toyed with the idea of buying from KIA and then trying to sell. But, with my luck I would have lost money.

So that is the end of the KIA. Doubt whether KIA will figure in our lives anytime soon. But ANOTHER Jag might!.

I hated DirecTV, with a vengeance, from the very first day I had it installed on June 21, 2013. Just check the above posts. It was a litany of never ending lies, scams and deception. I had to contact the BBB to help them sought out the initial order FRAUD and it was settled in my favor.

I vowed on these pages that I will get rid of DirecTV the very first day that I could — without giving them the satisfaction of charging me a cancellation penalty. I even set up this (— >>>) countdown clock.

Well DirecTV charges a month ahead, and given their unscrupulousness actually charges you one day AHEAD each month. So I had DirecTV installed on a 21st BUT they insist on charging my credit card on the 20th of each month. C’est la vie. The least of their many sins.

So on May 20, 2015, I paid for May 21 to June 20, 2015. That was the end of my contract. I called on May 21 to cancel. They said it was too early.

I called again on Friday, May 29, 2015. I called them twice and also talked with them on chat — and I have the transcript. Eventually they said that my account was closed.

It wasn’t. On Saturday, May 30, I still had service.

I called again. They said I was cancelled BUT they were keeping my service on …

So, that was 3 phone calls and one chat … and I still had service.

Around 3:30pm, Saturday, a very greasy sounding clown from DirecTV calls me up — on my cell — and starts with this “So, how can we rectify this mistake …” spiel. I blew my top. Though I give the impression of losing my temper and getting angry in reality I ONLY allow myself, AT MOST, 2 actual temper tantrums a year. [It has all to do with mind control.] But the two temper tantrums I permit myself, a year, are DOOZIES. I go to town. I go up one side of a person and down the other. As some of you know I do not swear. I don’t even use the ‘s’ word — which I detest. Yes, I frequently use damn, bloody and occasionally ‘bugger’ but we Brits do NOT consider those swear words — and “bugger” in Ceylon/Sri Lanka is a term of endearment. But I have a extremely potent vocabulary of swear words and can swear very effectively. I let that idiot from DirecTV have it with both barrels. I enjoyed it. Within seconds he was WHIMPERING: “OK. OK. I will cancel your account. You can stop now.” It was fun. The service is now disconnected.

I feel such a sense of relief. I really hated DirecTV and as with my temper I make sure that I do not hate many things — at any given time since that is a waste of time and energy. So as with the 2 tantrums a year I try to limit the things I hate at any given time to 2. That works. So for the last 2 years I have only hated two things: DirecTV and …. Now I am down to one. It gets better. I never really hated KIA, just disliked them, but in a couple of hours I am getting rid of our KIA Sportage too — 28 days ahead of its lease-end. But as with DirecTV I have paid up and can now return it. More on that once I actually

Does Ed Miliband, Next Presumptive U.K. PM, Have Any Indian In Him?

Given that I didn’t see much U.K. TV until I got SkyNews via my Roku 3 and BBC News (for awhile) via DirecTV during the last few months, I had not seen much of Ed Miliband or even know who he was.

The very first time I saw him, during PM’s Question Time, I just ASSUMED that he must have had an Indian parent! Would not be at all unusual in multiracial Britain. From then on each and every time I would see him I would be struck by his Indian appearance. With the elections looking it struck me that he could be the first Indian PM of the U.K. Not a bad thing at all and I, for one, would be delighted, though I am, of course, not an Indian (and have never been good looking or smart enough to be one). The other night I was forced to go check his parentage on Wikipedia. (See above) I was very surprised. But that, as we all know, means diddly.

It is as with Prince Harry — and I am no stranger to James Hewitt. I can never look at an image of Harry and NOT be reminded of James. As a Web acquaintance once said, you would have to be very drunk and be squinting in a special way NOT to see the resemblance.

It is possible with Miliband that the Indian connection could be from an earlier generation.

Am I the ONLY one who sees the Indian?

I also just had an e-mail from the U.K. saying that, if ‘elected’, he would be the first atheist PM. I checked. He has never said he was an atheist. He claimed to be a Jewish atheist — and I am adding that to my favorite list of oxymorons. You can’t be Jewish and an atheist. You could be ‘born Jewish’ and an atheist. AND if you were just wondering Benjamin Disraeli, as attested by his name was born Jewish, converted to Anglicanism at 12. And NO there have been no Catholic PMs. But, of course, we have had a female PM.

This was a movie I recorded, probably from Cinemax, during the latest free preview weekend on DirecTV. It looked vaguely amusing, and that it was.

We like ‘mindless’ movies like this. Easy to watch, easy on the eye. It is escapism. Nothing profound. It was OK. I would not have paid to see it, but for ‘free’ — it would be churlish to complain. Some funny bits. Decent commentary on current social mores.

The “Ladysmith Black Mambazo” lookalikes were a real BONUS. We saw them, live, at the ConcordCapitol Center for the Arts“, in 2003, and have always been great fans. We initially thought it was them but I had to make sure. Appears it is “Junior Mambazo”. Pretty good. Hard to tell the difference.

There was NO mistaking Dale. I immediately recognized him. What the HECK he was doing in this movie is a puzzle. Yes, of course, he got paid … BUT! Dale? Actually, no harm done. He must have had fun.

I had heard of the ‘anything goes’ hedonistic atmosphere at “Sun City”. If it is really like what they depict I might add it to my Bucket List — though it might be way beyond my meagre pay grade.

My detested and deplored DirecTV contract ends in June — two months from now.

June 22nd to be precise. As I avowed within a few days of getting it, I will cancel my DirecTV contract the VERY DAY that my 2-year commitment ends. To say that DirecTV irks me would be an understatement. DirecTV has got to be one of the scummiest companies in the U.S.

So what do I do next.

I, actually all of us, LOVE the Roku 3. The Roku really has changed our lives — watching “Downton Abbey“, nearly every day, not the only reason. Though I will give it some REAL serious consideration over the next few weeks, I am not convinced that I can live just with STREAMING. Streaming is good. Streaming is fun BUT I still like, or want, broadcast channels.

Plus, I, my nature and my IBM background, am into redundant solutions. Not sure I want everything media-wise coming into this house to be Internet-based — even IF I end up, down the road, with two separate Internet feeds, TDS & MetroCast, for redundancy.

I don’t think I need all the channels I now get with DirecTV. But I am not going to sacrifice BBC America, Travel or Animal Planet for $10/month. So most likely I will still end up with a 200+ channel package.

I will get a monthly discount on Dish through TDS. That is a given. I am amazed how expensive MetroCast is! Wow. Don’t even mention ‘Packages’! They are a ripoff! I get FREE VoIP with Google Voice. Why do I need to pay for a voice package. Have it already. Thank you.

I will keep you posted. This was but the opening salvo.

June is going to be busy. Lease on the KIA also comes to an end; June 27. At least we are all agreed on the replacement plan for that. One or more Jags!

DirecTV, as all my ‘Why I Hate DirecTV posts‘ graphically portray, is one of the worst U.S. corporations ever.

They lie, they cheat, they deceive, they extort money from you.

Their lies: They claim that NO SOUND with HDMI is not there problem. Check my sidebar (>>>>) … scroll down to “Top Posts & Pages“. My post on HOW to fix this DirecTV fault gets, on average, 30 hits a day, and has for 11 months.

We all know how badly AT&T sucks.

So this is a marriage made in hell to make poor customers suffer.

My DirecTV countdown clock, again on the sidebar (>>>>), tells me I have 13 months left. I will ditch DirecTV the day the contract expires.

Though viscerally I find it hard to agree with anything that DirecTV says or does, given the boatloads of unmitigated abuse I had had from them, I do have to say, albeit very grudgingly, I have no problem, whatsoever, of them getting rid of ‘The Weather Channel‘. I will even say Bravo (and I am not referring to the channel).

To me, ‘The Weather Channel’ is a total waste of time — though to be fair I really never watch it! If I want weather on TV I go to a local station, even one in Boston. To say that ‘The Weather Channel’ shows local weather around the clock is a fallacy. They have so much useless crud that it is impossible to actually ever get what you want — in my opinion. I don’t even know what channel it is on! That alone tells me that I have no use for it. With the channels that I watch: CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, DISC, SCI, TLC, DEST, BBCA, HIST, HIST2 etc. etc. I know either the exact channel number or what range I can find it within, e.g., in the high 200s or middle 300s. No clue with ‘The Weather Channel’. So, I say: GRBR.

As DirecTV points out there are better resources. WMUR does have an APP and I do have it on my pad — and even used it for the first time yesterday, though without luck, to see how much snow accumulation we were supposed to get from the MLK weekend storm. So, I have no problem with DirecTV getting rid of those useless bums — and this will probably be the ONLY time I will agree with anything that DirecTV does.

I rely a LOT on ‘wunderground.com‘ for my local weather. They are wunderful!
