Happened to find it serendipitously around 11:20pm on Thursday, July 21, when I, as I often did, checked the electronic program guide to see what interesting stuff was coming up on the ‘Smithsonian Channel’. I DVR a fair amount from the Smithsonian and watch it if there is no decent cricket to watch.

(Re)Watch ‘Bobby’, The 2006 Movie, 48-Years And All That Seems To Have Changed Was Obama!

by Anura Guruge

The FULL MOVIE is on YouTube!

I had seen it in 2006 — when it first came on. It was on DISH this last weekend and I DVRed it and watched it a couple of nights ago.

Wow. Wow. WOW!

It was like a TIME WARP. It could so easily have been June of 2016.

We are still talking about the SAME ISSUES: the DIVIDES — racial, wealth, hispanics-blacks, voter suppression, ‘right to work’, vote-rigging and voting machines.

Scary. IF you are into politics you really should watch this (again).

Makes you THINK — which is always a good thing.

Where would we be, where would the World be, IF just one of the Kennedy brothers had been spared?

The ONLY thing that this movie did not presage was that there would be an Obama exactly 40 years later.

Great movie.

‘Big Eyes’, The 2014 Movie Is Definitely Worth Watching If You Haven’t Seen It — Interesting, True Story.

by Anura Guruge

Watch the trailer on YouTube.

I was not familiar with this movie — given that I do not follow movie news or tends. Just tend to watch them on TV and occasionally at the cinema — and that, 100% of the time, is for the kids.

Big Eyes” caught my eyes when I was looking through all the ‘new’ movies available this weekend, on Cinemax & Showtime, as part of the DISH free, preview. I subscribe to HBO, so I don’t have to worry about catching movies available on that channel.

I DVRed “Big Eyes” (I think on Friday night) amongst a total of about 14 other movies and all 12 episodes of “Billions”.

“Big Eyes” is the only movie from this batch of recordings that we have watched — and by that I include Teischan (given that it was PG-13 (and we let Teischan watch PG-13s as long as she is with us)).

Good movie. True story. Amazing story. So 1950s and 1960s. Compelling. We liked it.

TDS TV ‘Expanded Package’ Channel Comparison Against DISH ‘America’s Top 120+’

by Anura Guruge

I do NOT switch TV providers or Internet service providers without considerable research and due diligence.

So, I am not going to get TDS TV, with 1 Gigabit Internet, without doing a diligent pros and cons comparison — though I have been a TDS phone/Internet customer for over 9 years.

So, over the last few nights I did this TV channel comparison.

I picked TDS’ ‘Expanded Package‘ (which is supposed to have 130+ channels) and compared it against DISH’s ‘Top 120+‘, which is what I have had for the last 3 weeks having downgraded from the ‘Top 200+’ (or thereabouts).

Some explanations:

  1. I did this in a hurry and it did not have to be 100%. It just had to be a quick-and-‘dirty’ comparison. So, I might have screwed up on a few channels, BUT the BIG PICTURE should remain unaltered.
    ….
  2. The MIDDLE yellow column that says ‘In DISH’ means that the corresponding channel, at left, on the TDS column is available on DISH.
    ….
  3. What is listed in the DISH column are the channels available on DISH but not in TDS.
    …..
  4. Channels highlighted in BLUE in the TDS column are ‘good'(/’premium’) channels NOT included by DISH in 120+
    ….

Got that?

Bottom Line: TDS has BETTER channels. But, is is all streaming and I don’t know what the quality would be like. Plus, there can be streaming/buffering/server delays making picture jerky. Plus, it is all Internet-based. At least with DISH you could still get it even when the Internet is down (provided it is NOT snowing hard).

TDS TV 1Gig Fiber Service In Alton (N.H.) Comes To Over $225/month For My Needs!

by Anura Guruge

tds1g

I currently have TWO Internet services: 150/160Mbps from MetroCast and 15Mbps from TDS. Yes, I have two services to get more bandwidth and redundancy (when one goes down). I also have DISH TV (via TDS) and a TDS landline.

I had always said I would get 1Gig when it was available. But, I have now gone 2 months without doing so.

Yes, my current bills for TDS/DISH & MetroCast comes to around $235. So in theory I can get much more for less with TDS.

Aaahh! But the devil is in the details. I get HBO with DISH. It will cost me ANOTHER $20 to get it with the TDS bundle. Plus now I have redundancy and that is always nice when either MetroCast (very rarely) or TDS (more often) is down. IF I want redundancy it will cost me more. Without HBO I would probably be in the $260 region. But, in theory I will be getting a LOT of bandwidth though none of the speeds are guaranteed.

Some of you may have seen TDS’ $101.94/month price.

That is for 100Mbps, NO HD, 1 TV and Internet phone.

TDS charges $10/month for HD and $8/month for additional TVs. So I am immediately $18 up on that.

So, just a heads up. HD is $10/month, additional TVs are $8/month and you will only get a landline IF you already have one — like we do.

DISH TV Without CNBC & MSNBC Will Be Pretty Useless To ME!

by Anura Guruge

Click image to access original. Google for MORE.

I just happened to see this, on DISH (ironically), while watching MSNBC earlier this morning.

From what I see ‘Boston’ is not listed as an impacted market … BUT who knows.

Yes, we have all seen these DISH/DirecTV blackout threats.

But DISH without CNBC, in particular, will be useless to I. I wake up, each morning, to CNBC on my TV. I watch is for over an hour.

So I am going to stay on top of this. This could be a bummer.

FYI: Latest Roku Channel Guide Claims Willow Cricket Available On Roku Outside Of Sling.

With the ICC World Twenty20 2016 just three days out I know that there are many in the U.S. looking at what options they have to watch the matches.

This is essentially a quick update to my February 28, 2016 post about Willow, Sling & the Twenty20 2016.

As you can see from the above image the Roku Guide (which I get via e-mail) claims that you can get Willow on Roku either on its own (for the standard $14.99/month which will also includes other devices, e.g., phone) or for $10/month through Sling.

IF you are ONLY interested in the Twenty20 2016 matches SIGN-UP directly with Willow and pay the $14.99 for the month. You will be GLAD you did that.

Sling, as I continue to complain about, can be an absolute pain — and their electronic program guide will NOT show you which matches are being shown! Every match will just say “Cricket Highlights”. You then have to click on it to see which match it is. A friggin bloody pain BUT the folks had SLING, I have come to believe, are committed SADISTS. It appears that they love nothing more than inflicting pain on their customers. If you don’t believe me sign-up with SLING and get ready to be tortured. SMILE.

That Willow, that I watch through my Roku 3 via SLING (which is STILL a damn pain), was going to covering the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 2016 was NOT news to me per se since Willow had been promoting coverage of the event since December. I was glad. I think the last World Twenty20 was NOT on Willow. This is good.

Then again Willow also, a couple of weeks ago, covered the ICC U19 World Cup in its entirety and I did watch some of the matches.

Willow is GOOD. There HD picture quality has greatly improved.

The problem, always has been, bloody SLING. SLING is an abortion. SLING is a disgrace. SLING still won’t tell you, in the Program Guide, what match is being shown. you have to go through two bloody steps, for each game, to see what is on offer. Appears that Willow, probably through pressure from SLING/DISH, no longer offers an Roku APP of their own.

So bottom line IF you want Willow cricket in the U.S. Willow GOOD. SLING BAD. If you can get Willow without SLING go for that option even IF it costs a few dollars more. You will not regret it. The only thing you will regret is being tied to frigging, ‘what a joke’ SLING.
