That was quite the innings even after the often glorious batting we had seen by Australian David Warner and Usman Khawaja. The latter was a revelation to me in this Test series. Never heard of him before. He sure can bat, and do so attractively. Hope his hamstring pull will not keep him out. David Warner, I knew, and I was not surprised. The only thing that surprised me was that he did not try for a triple. Ditto Ross Taylor. It was a shame to see him get out at 290. Wow.

Ross Taylor is no stranger to me though I didn’t know anything really about him other than that he can bat and catch. I, given his distinctive facial features, had suspected that he had some Māori in him. Today, for the first time, I looked him up — on Wikipedia for expediency. I was wrong but that is not surprising because I am no expert when it comes to Polynesian ethnicity. His mother is Samoan. So that explains the features. His full name is Luteru Ross Poutoa Lote Taylor. Never knew that. That is quite the name.

So as to his innings, which as some of the commentators did not tire of saying was indeed a Master Class of batting. I wish we had television when I was growing up and that I would have been able to see the likes of this innings. He would have helped me tremendously.

Did YOU notice how he put his tongue out — ‘Haka‘ style — when he got to 100 & 200. See picture. Was that a Samoan thing, like the Haka. Nobody commented on it though it was very obvious. I doubt it was just a ‘nervous’ thing though I have noticed that he does put his tongue out, not as much as this, more often than most.

That he the first Kiwi to score a double century against Australia amazed me. I just had assumed that this had had to have been done earlier. Pretty amazing. 2015 before first Kiwi double century against the Aussies.

That his 290 is the HIGHEST score in Australia by a visiting batsman also surprised the heck out of me. Wow. And Ross Taylor. Good for him.

I checked. His highest score by a stretch, his previous best having been 217. That is great. Just wish he had made 300. I was all ready. Then he holed out. But that is OK. I hope he gets to score a triple at some point.
