Same spot at the top of our drive in December.

I guess we had a bit of snow. So much for Al Gore and his global warming.

Nemorecession

Hit me like a ton of bricks when I saw all the business closed in Providence and Boston today. Many also closed early yesterday. There won’t be much foot traffic in Boston tomorrow — the 1st (non-parade) Sunday of Chinese New Year.

This blizzard will have a negative impact on 1Q GDP.

Last quarters GDP was negative, though barely. But, it was negative — and Hurricane Sandy was responsible for some.

Definition of a recession: two back-to-back quarters of negative GDP.

1Q GDP was tenuous to begin with thanks to all of the continued mindless political wranglings in D.C. — and you know who I blame for much of that.

A recession is really but a technical indicator and by the time we are told that we are in a recession it could very well be in the rear-view mirror. Remember the definition: two negative back-to-back quarters of GDP. So by design it is a trailing indicator. We will only find out about 1Q GDP in 2Q. 2Q, thanks to President Obama, could be blowout. End of recession.

The President doesn’t have to worry about re-election and I already feel confident that Hillary will easily win 2016. I can’t believe I am saying that. In 2008 I detested her. I was never a Clinton fan during their Presidency. I spent so much time circulating Clinton jokes, so, so many about cigars and that blue dress, in the mid-1990s. I was even compiling a dossier on Hillary’s alleged dalliances. Remember that guy who shot himself in a park? Well that was then, and this is now. I started to warm up to her once she started embracing my man. She did a bang up job as Secretary of State. She made Obama proud. I have come to like and even admire Bill! I really have changed my stripes. This is why those that knew me in the 1990s are beside themselves as to my 180° change in political leanings. Since they are all conservatives, as was I, they don;t really like me much anymore. Some are holding out hope that I will see the light and change stripes again.

So a quick, passing recession precipitated by Nemo will not have any political ramifications. We might get a 400 point one-day drop in the Dow. That too will pass.

But, just keep an eye on this potential recession — and remember where you first read about it.

11:40 am when I got to the top of the drive. Much of this is what the Town plow leaves behind when it plows the road. This is always the hardest part.

Head down shoveling. I get into a rhythm and keep on going. Devanee helps. She is good.

40 minutes of shoveling with Devanee’s help and we can see light at the end of the tunnel.

12:50 pm and we blast through onto the road. I am driving. We didn’t have to go anywhere. This is just liberation. Devanee and I drove around for fun.

Mission accomplished. About 70 minutes of concerted, nonstop shoveling with HELP. The rest can wait. Tomorrow the Sun will help.

After any snow storm I have but one initial goal. Make sure that at least one of the vehicles can get out. A safety thing, plus I am claustrophobic. Lot of snow by the road, thanks to the Town trucks. But, it was light. I pick my snow shovels with the same care that Test batsman pick their bats. It has to have the right balance, heft and weight. I only use very light shovels. I buy 3 of the same each year from Home Depot, checking each for balance. Then it is heads down, dig, lift, rotate, throw. I enjoy the effort. I like to feel the muscles and tendons stretching. Shoveling is easier than my ‘daily’ run up the hill — because I wear weights when I run. So, to me, this is FUN. As many know, I have never, ever, admitted to being normal. To me, to be normal, would be so boring and cliche.

Well we are out. We didn’t need to get out. We had enough food, wine and dog food for 3 weeks. Maybe just two weeks of supplies for the bunnies but you can feed them my salad stuff. So getting out wasn’t a necessity. Just a goal. So, that was our blizzard. Devanee and I will shovel the mailbox out tomorrow. No mail today or tomorrow. The above 32°F temperatures will help a bit. Actually quite a bit. When I am out there for an hour or more and the temps are around 36 (or more) you can see the snow going down.

It is pretty spectacular. It is 10:31 am and it is still snowing. So that is more than 28 hours of continuous snowing. The wind, however, at least for now, has dropped. I was forced to work till 1:10 am this morning. A few readers on my pope blog had been bugging me for 36 hours to post some pictures of post. So at 12:10, after I finished writing some much needed paragraphs on my book, I started working on that post. It is actually quite interesting. A series we are doing of photographs of multiple ‘popes’ together, i.e., a pope with one or more of his successors. The wind was howling. Though we have modern, insulated, plastic windows, they were getting rattled. Then just around 1 am I could feel the wind drop. Soon it was calm. When I went downstairs I opened the door and checked. The wind had died down. I was glad. But, I still expected to lose power and Internet during the night. Not so. I even checked my dedicated bandwidth. I am getting my usual 14.5 Mbps download and 3.5 Mbps upload. Deanna hasn’t complained so I assume her connection is good too, though I haven’t checked its bandwidth. [Yes, we get two separate TDS fiber feeds to the house.]

So far, so good I think. 4′ to 5′ drifts. The mailbox has snow up to the box — the work of the plow. The snow is winding down as they had predicted. I plan to go out in an hour and do 3 hours of shoveling. That will be my exercise for the day. Much to Deanna’s chagrin I am losing weight with my new low-carb regime. Love the new digital, BMI display scales. I took some pictures of it the other day. I have to do a post on it.

The snowdrift that greeted Teischan and the dogs when Deanna opened the garage door this morning. Probably close to 4′.

Front door when I opened it at 10 am this morning. I measured it 29″. Given we had shoveled at least 1″ off it yesterday, we are talking 30″.

Our covered deck. This has a roof and mesh screens. So this is all the snow that blew in through the screens. I take down my wooden Ceylon devil masks in the Winter. They would not have liked this weather.
