New Hampshire: How Long Before Permanent Plastic Driver’s License Arrives (To Replace Paper) — 2017

by Anura Guruge

In my case: 24-days.

Thursday, July 12, 2017 to Saturday, August 5, 2017.

Went to the main Concord DMV office around 3pm on Thursday, July 12, 2017.

Was issued paper license valid for 60-days, i.e., until September 10, 2017.

Plastic, READ ID, license arrives, much to my relief, on Saturday, August 5, 2017.

3 weeks 3 days = 24 days.

This came with the license (and another letter about renewal in 5-years). Click to ENLARGE and read. Interesting stuff about ‘Read ID’ and the validity of non-Real ID licenses for federal purposes (read TSA) till October 2020.

I did request a ‘Read ID’ license and mine does have a STAR on it — top right. Seems rather incongruous that this is how Real-ID is designated. There is, however, a lot of encoded ‘barcode’ information at the back of the card. I suspect that police and other agencies will read the license with a scanner and get access to all the back-end data.

24-days is NOT bad. Pretty good, if anything.

In mid-2015 we noticed 28 days.

It was 20-days in 2012. So, not bad.

Hope this helps.

IRS ‘Free File Fillable Forms’: Two Changes To 2016 e-File Process.

by Anura Guruge

Continues to work, and work very well.

Just filed, yes, e-Filed, my 2016 IRS Tax return using “Free File Fillable Forms“, on Friday — this my 7th year using them.

No real problems other than me screwing up two things that e-File pre-processing picked up.

But, noticed two (2) BIG changes in the e-File process.

I guess this is to enhance filing security after the fraudulent e-File claim scandals of the last couple of years.

So, here are the two changes:

1/ You have to include Driver’s License information.

2/ There is CAPTCHA human verification before you are allowed to enter e-Filing.

The first, i.e., requiring further identification, in this instance Driver’s License (or State-issued ID) data makes sense though it was a pain to go get our licenses. Having to enter the issued date really does make the difference. You couldn’t fudge that.

But, I am confused by the CAPTCHA. That is only to ensure human participation. I didn’t realize that there had been a problem of automated, robotic filings. Wow.

2017 update HERE — Click.

I average 12 hits a day on my original July 2012 post
on how long it takes to get your permanent driver’s license
in New Hampshire — after an online renewal.

So I feel obligated to keep you all up to-date.

28 Days
in June — July 2015.

Deanna applied for her’s, online on June 11, 2015.

She received her plastic, permanent license on July 9, 2015.

28 days. So that took 8 days longer than it did with mine in 2012.

But there was 4th of July within that period. That would have added a few days.

But it is still way shorter than the 40 to 60 days they say — to be on the safe side.
