The Great ‘Dwarf Planet’ Scam Perpetrated By The Supposedly August International Astronomical Union (IAU).

That table above, from my 2011 book ‘Dwarf Planets‘, contains all the background you need to understand this scam.

So, this was from a book published 9-years ago. Also in the table we have 5 (& only 5) Dwarf Planets — the last of which, Humea, was designated as such in September 2008.

September 2008 is coming up to 12-years.

In those 12-years the IAU has not designated any other Dwarf Planets.

We had 5 Dwarf Planets in Sept. 2008, we still have 5 Dwarf Planets in June 2020.

NO. NO. NO.

Dwarf Planets, of course, are very different from Planets. That is why Pluto was reclassified a Dwarf.

Yes, we don’t have many planets & yes, the last was discovered a very, very long time ago.

Not so with Dwarfs. We have THOUSANDS that appear to meet the criteria. They have LONG LISTS of possible Dwarf Candidates.

But, the IAU has not done anything in terms of expanding the pool of Dwarfs since 2008.

And therein lies the scam.

It would appear that the IAU has had second — if not third, fourth or fifth — thoughts about Dwarf Planets.

It would appear that they think that they screwed up. But, they are too august & proud to say that. So, instead they are hoping to atrophy the issue & category.

Well, I, for one, will not let that happen.

So, now YOU know.

2018 VG18 Is NOT A Dwarf Planet, Also NOT The Furthest Known Object In The Solar System.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and read here. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_VG18

2018 VG18

Is NOT a dwarf planet. It is a possible dwarf planet CANDIDATE.

It is NOT the farthest known object in the solar system. 90377 Sedna goes out much, much further as do most of the non-periodic comets.

It is the farthest object OBSERVED in the Solar System. Both Sedna and Dwarf Planet Eris were closer to the sun in their long, elliptical orbits when they were discovered. That is key here. Farthest observed.

How can I be so sure about these things. Very simple. I wrote THE BOOK on Dwarf Planets!

Click to ENLARGE and read. This is about how they discovered Eris when it was 90 AU out.

We had another FALSE Dwarf Planet claim in 2016. Click image to access that post.

So this is exciting, but we have to keep it in perspective.

It has now been over 10-years — YES, 10-years — since we have had a NEW dwarf planet. There is politics here and possibly even some second-thoughts and regrets, Maybe they were hasty in coming up with the classification ‘dwarf planet’. Minor planet and trans-Neptunian object (TNO) might have sufficed.

But, I will keep you posted.

Eris was discovered on January 5, 2005 from images taken October 21, 2003.

July 29, 2005 was the ANNOUNCE day — when dwarf planet Makemake was also unveiled.

Eris is a remarkable solar system object with an amazingly long and distant orbital path. At its furthest it is over 97 TIMES further from the Sun than Earth. It takes Eris 558 years to make one orbit of the Sun!

Percival Lowell, The ORIGINAL ‘Mr. Planet X’ & Pluto’s Godfather Was Born Today, 162-Years Ago; March 13, 1855.

by Anura Guruge

The Lowell Observatory, in Flagstaff, Arizona, from which Pluto was discovered was founded by Percival 14-years ahead of the discovery.

He was the original ‘Mr. Planet X‘ who was convinced that there was a 9th planet beyond Neptune.

He also believed that there had been Martians that dug an extensive network of canals on Mars — the Martian Canals!

As with the discoveries of Pluto and Uranus I talk about Percival Lowell, at length in my 2011 paperback & e-book Devanee’s Book of Dwarf Planets (which is definitely worth looking at (even if I say so myself)).

plutodogThis epic discovery, just 2-weeks after Clyde Tombaugh had turned 24, was a BIG deal. The patience and diligence required to spot a small object that had moved, using the ‘Blink Comparator‘, was monumental. These days this is all done in seconds using computers.

Disney’s ‘Pluto’ was named after the new planet — and came to be 7 months later.

How ‘Pluto’ came to be ‘Pluto’ is also quite a cute story and I narrate it all in THE book.

Pluto‘ is NEVER naked eye visible. So, I can’t ask you to go outside and look for Pluto, But, this about Pluto and Clyde Tombaugh today.

CNN & Others WRONG. There Is NO New Dwarf Planet, viz. 2015 RR245.

Another view of 2015 RR245’s amazingly distant orbit around the Sun from my favorite JPL orbit tracker. You can see Pluto, Neptune, Uranus etc. — as dots — for reference. Click to ENLARGE. Copy and paste this link “http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2015%20RR245;old=0;orb=1;cov=0;log=0;cad=0#orb” into FireFox (not Chrome). Does not work with Chrome!

2015 RR245 (which known as a temporary designation (and indicates WHEN in 2015 it was discovered)) is indeed small, i.e., less than 1/3rd the size of Pluto, and amazingly far away. BUT that does NOT automatically make it into a Dwarf Planet.

CoverJPGI do know a fair amount about Dwarf Planets. I have written a book about them.

As of today, July 13, 2016, there are but five (5), and only five (5), dwarf planets. They are: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris. Period. Full stop. Just 5. Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris.

CNN cannot designate a Solar System body a Dwarf Planet.

Neither can any astronomer.

For that matter neither can NASA or its European equivalent, ESA!

That a Solar System body is a Dwarf Planet can ONLY be designated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). That is it.

Until the IAU says it is a Dwarf it is NOT a dwarf. Simple as that.

The last time the IAU designated a Solar System body a Dwarf was on September 17, 2008. See below. That was Haumea. They have kept their ‘powder dry’ since then!

So nobody but nobody can jump the gun.

Until the IAU says so, 2015 RR245 is NOT a Dwarf Planet.

Got that?

Hoped For ‘Planet X’, The Ninth Planet, CAN NOT Be Named After David Bowie. Period.

by Anura Guruge

9thplanetbowie

Click to access original.

Contrary to what many realize the officially recognized names of celestial bodies are carefully governed and assigned per some very strict guidelines maintained by the ‘International Astronomical Union’ (IAU) — an organization recognized by 74 world powers.

To have the supposed ninth planet (or any other planet in our Solar System) named after David Bowie he would have to be deemed a god.

Yes, there are those that will avow that David Bowie is a god. But, alas, that alone is not enough.

To be considered for planetary naming honors the god ALSO has to be a well established very long term player, such as Venus, Mercury, Jupiter or Saturn, and it has to be a MYTHICAL god. David Bowie is not mythical. So he is ruled out forever, forever.

The current convention is that Dwarf Planets are also named after mythical gods/goddesses THOUGH they don’t have to be, for obvious reasons, as towering as those assigned to the planets.

Comets, if named, are named after the discoverers or the ‘team’ that discovered them. David Bowie did not discover any comets.

Giving stars official names is now in decline and as with planets/dwarfs any and all OFFICIAL names assigned have to be mythical characters.

So the only option for having a (non-satellite) celestial body named after Bowie is to name an asteroid after him — and that has already been done! 342843 Davidbowie.

The Asteroid Named After David Bowie, 342843 Davidbowie.

It is a Main-Belt Asteroid and as such is always outside the orbit of Mars.

The 342843 is a sequence number, in that it is the 342,843rd confirmed ‘Minor Planet’ to have been discovered, Ceres (now a Dwarf Planet) having the honor of being the 1st, i.e., 1 Ceres. Pluto now that it is a dwarf is numbered 134340.

The name is optional and is initially put forward by the discoverer of the asteroid.

As of today 701,660 ‘Minor Planets’ have been catalogued as having been discovered. 19,712 of them, just a mere 2%, are named. Here is the list. So to have an asteroid named after you is, of course, special, BUT not that exclusive.

The ‘Beatles’ collectively and individually have asteroids named after them, viz. 8749 Beatles, 4147 Lennon, 4148 McCartney, 4149 Harrison & 4150 Starr. Some of the others include Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Mike Oldfield, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, Bee Gees, Buddy Holly etc. etc. Here is a list.

So David, as is due, has been honored as a ‘spaceman’.
