Sony E-Mount, PZ 18-105mm — Updating Firmware To Ver. 04.

by Anura Guruge

This, the Version 04 Firmware update, was released on July 27, 2017 — 4 days ago. I read about it on DPReview which I religiously scan, at least once a day, for just such information.

I had never updated firmware on a Sony lens. So I had some trepidations. To be fair to Sony they use the same update mechanism as that for their cameras. So that at least was comforting.

The update proved to be straightforward, painless and quick. Worked just as it was supposed to. Was done in minutes.

However, I have NOT noticed any difference in the lens’ autofocus (AF) prowess. If anything it was worse than it used to be! And I am not kidding. So …

Just letting you know. I would NOT rush to upgrade. Wait and see what others have to say. Check the DPReview forums.

APS-C to Full-Frame Lens Focal Length Crib Chart — Mainly For Sony E-mount Lenses.

by Anura Guruge

Well as I elaborated yesterday,
I have to get my head around this focal-length
‘equivalence’.

Since I am used to thinking in APS-C terms
I needed my own crib sheet just to be on the safe side.

As you can see I am focusing on Sony E-mount
focal lengths.

Click to ENLARGE. Yes, I have an Excel spreadsheet. I can plugin whatever numbers you need THOUGH it is but a trivial exercise in multiplying by 1.5 or dividing by 1.5.

Here is a picture from yesterday IF it helps.

To get the same Depth of Field (DoF) that I got with a 40.7mm APS-C lens,
I would need a 61mm Full-Frame lens.

I needed this to work out what lenses I need to consider.

With FF, anything below 27mm will be WAY TOO WIDE for I!

I am probably better off sticking to FF 50mm and more. {SMILE}

My Two Sony a6500 Posts From A ‘Month’ Ago Appear To Be Pretty Prophetic.

by Anura Guruge

The APS-C, mirrorless Sony a6500 was announced October 6, 2016.

I made the following two posts within 2 days of that announcement and I might have been PROPHETIC beyond belief.

Check them out.

In terms of image stabilization & autofocus points it even puts the Fuji X-T2 to shame — and everybody swears the a6xxxs outperform the Fuji when it comes to AF, hands down.

Since the above posts, nearly a month ago, I have been doing a lot of in-depth research into the Sony a6500. It appears to be one heck of a camera. People rave about the Sony a6300 which was released in February 2016 and DPReview gave it 84% rating compared to the 85% for the X-T2.

The Sony a6500 adds image stabilization and a touch-screen to what was offered by the a6300. That has to give it 2% more points.

I am torn. I have not had much luck with Sonys and I have owned two: a Sony a77 Mk II and a Sony RX100 Mk II. But neither of these are in the league of the new Sony a6500.

I am having to give this an undue amount of thought and attention.

P.S., The price isn’t bad either though Sony E-mount lenses are pricey.

Talk about a let down. I saw the ‘B&H’ ad. for an Hasselblad on Facebook. When I saw the price I did get EXCITED. I have always lusted after an Hasselblad! At $1,299 I could seriously afford it — though Deanna would brain me (though she is convinced that I will buy myself another camera (my 3rd in the last few months) before Christmas).

Given that I do NOT keep up with Hasselblads I checked. I was CRUSHED. It is a re-branded Sony NEX-7 and the DEAD GIVEAWAY is that it uses Sony E-mount lenses. It has a different facade — BUT it is NOT manufactured by Hasselblad in Sweden. Instead it is made by Sony in Thailand. Screw that for a game of soldiers. To be fair I have toyed at the idea of getting a NEX.

They are NOT the only ones doing this unbecoming rebranding trick. The Leica VLux is the very same camera as my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 (with a longer warranty)!

But I am going to wait. Right now my goal is to wait for the Fuji X-T2. We, and by that I do mean us as a family, most likely will get a GoPro for Christmas. I own GoPro stock. So it seems the right thing to do. Devanee would like one.
