Memorial Day 2020 — Early, As In May 25, But Not Unusual.

by Anura Guruge

Prior to 1971, it was called ‘Decoration Day’ & always held on May 31st, irrespective of what day of the week it was.

As of 1971 it became ‘Memorial Day‘ & would be held on the LAST Monday of May.

Last Monday of May can fall between the 25th & 31st.

So, while May 25th may seem early — and it is (in that it is THE earliest it can now be) — it is not uncommon.

We had Memorial Day on May 25th just 5-years ago, in 2015. You can’t remember that?

And it was 6-years prior to that. Prior that that we had an 11-year gap.

Memorial Day falling on the 25th goes in those 5-6-11 year cycles. That is the same for all these types of fixed day events. 11-year gaps come about due to Leap Years.

We will have Memorial Day again on May 25th in 6-years time. Don’t forget.

Lake Winnipesaukee [NH] Ice-Out: Earliest Occurrences.

by Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE and study. Note, 2012 was a LEAP YEAR and I take that into account.

2012 was a LEAP YEAR and I take that into account.
I count days from January 1, taking into account leap years.
So, March 24 in a non-leap year is the SAME as March 23 in a Leap Year.

So, of course, we have had ice-outs by now; viz. April 5.

And we don’t have to go to far. Just in the last 9-years, with 2016 THE RECORD since the 1887 — the first year for which we have reliable data.

I was in Wolfeboro two-days ago. The ice was very white and looked pretty solid.

Yesterday, the ice on The Broads looked black. That means it would typically break-up within 48-hours. I have seen it happen — ONCE. Magical. One second we have ice, the next it is ALL gone as far as the eye can see. This was in 1999 or 2000 when I was living waterfront in Gilford.

Mid-April might be good for this year too.

Chanukah (Hanukkah) Coinciding With Christmas, ‘Chrismukkah’.

by Anura Guruge

There will be a fair amount of interest this year since Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night, falls on Christmas Eve.

That is special. Only the 4th time it has fallen on Christmas Even since 1900.

Chanukah/Hanukkah First Night can also fall on Christmas Day, as it did in 2005 and will again in 2024.

But, given the 8-day span of Chanukah/Hanukkah this ‘Chrismukkah’ conjunction can happen any time Chanukah/Hanukkah falls December 18th and Christmas day.

This has happened 33 times since 1900 to 2016: 1902, 1905, 1908, 1910, 1913, 1916, 1921, 1924, 1927, 1932, 1935, 1940, 1943, 1946, 1951, 1954, 1959, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011 & 2016.

It will happen 20 times between next year and 2099: 2019, 2022, 2024, 2027, 2030, 2035, 2038, 2046, 2049, 2054, 2057, 2065, 2068, 2073, 2076, 2084, 2087, 2092, 2095 & 2098.

You don’t have to wait long. Next one is in but 3 years! 2019.

This Year’s May 30 ‘Memorial Day’ Isn’t Unusual — Used To Be THE Day Until 1971

Memorial Days Past & Future

memorial days past future Anura Guruge

Click to ENLARGE. Created by Anura Guruge.

Prior to 1971 ‘Memorial Day‘ (which was originally known as ‘Decoration Day‘) was always celebrated on ‘May 30’ — irrespective of what day of the week it was. The holiday goes back to the end of the Civil War.

In 1968 Congress, with the ‘Uniform Holidays Bill‘ aimed at creating 3-day weekends, mandated that ‘Memorial Day’ would be on the last Monday of May. As such it can fall anywhere from May 25 to May 31. This year will be the 7th time, since 1971, it has fallen on May 30.

May 26, May 28 and May 31 have already had 7 instances. Falls the least often on the earliest possible day, May 25.

Lake Winnipesaukee, NH Ice-Out 2016 — Ice-Out BEFORE Easter Is Not That Unusual.

by Anura Guruge

2016 Lake Winnipesaukee Ice-Out,
declared Friday, March 18, 2016,
77 Days into the Year
(while prior record was 82 days).

See this post for all the statistics.

Some have commented that 2016 Ice-Out is before Easter
— 2016 Easter on Sunday, March 27.

This, however, is not that unusual given that
Easter can occur as late as April 25.

27 instances of Ice-Out before Easter
(counting 2016) AND 4 cases when
Ice-Out was ON Easter.

That means that in the 130 years that we have records for,
Ice-Out happened on/before Easter 24% of the time.

Most have occurred on Thursdays.

Lake Winnipesaukee, NH: Ice-Out For Last 25 Years. Record = 2010 & 2012.

by Anura Guruge

I have all the dates going back to 1887 — 129 years. Average during that time is April 19 (depending on Leap Years).

But I thought 25 years was a good window.

So BOTH all time records have been in within the last 7 years!

But, please, let us not take this as a definitive sign of Global Warming. Last year and year before we had ice outs close to average.

I am sure that this year, 2016, ice out will set a new record.

Lake Winnipesaukee, NH: Earliest Ice-Out March 23/24 (Depending On Leap Year).

by Anura Guruge

All the indications are that we will get an early ice-out this year. Possibly very early.

The earliest recorded ice-outs, since they started keeping records in 1887 (129 years ago), is day 82 of the year.

Depending on whether it is a Leap Year or not day 82 is either March 24 (non-Leap) or March 23 (Leap).

This year is a Leap Year. So 82 days into the year will be March 23.

Today, March 11, is day 70. So we have 12 days to play with.

There is a hope that ice-out this year might beat all records and fall on the Spring Equinox, which is on March 20.

Easter Sunday is on March 27. Given that Easter can fall between March 22 and April 25 ice-out on March 20 – 23 would mean that it was BEFORE the range of Easter.

Winter Solstice And Shortest Day In New Hampshire For 2013 Still 13 Days Away, But Earliest Sunsets Right Now …

The shortest day of the year, the Winter Solstice, MY favorite day of the year (since it heralds the coming of Summer), is on December 21, 2013.

But, the rate at which sunrise and sunset varies, from day to day, going towards the Solstice and coming out of it isn’t symmetrical.

So, right now we are in THE period of the EARLIEST sunsets. That doesn’t mean that these are the SHORTEST days because sunrise happens ‘earlier’.

So in terms of daylight hours we still have 13 days to go before we see the shortest day.

But, for those that don’t see sunrise (in the winter) these are the shortest days because the sunset is earlier.

I know, this is kind of obtuse. Not immediately obvious. Though I understand it, each year around this time, I still have to stop and think about it to make sure it is clear in my mind.

The following tables will explain. Study them.
The top two are from our U.S. Naval Observatory.
Third is from ‘Time & Date‘ an excellent resource.

In the mid-1990s before I went on my own I worked for a couple of years, as the ‘Lead Consultant‘ at Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) — THE place where some of  ‘the Internet‘ was invented, and NO, Al Gore never worked at BBN. Amazing place. I have never seen, not even at Cisco, IBM, Northern Telecom, just a inescapable concentration of raw, vivid intelligence. I used to be in awe. I always felt that I was the ‘Token Dummy‘ they had hired — and I had this exalted title! But, I repaid them in my own little way. In my first year there I got about 20 articles, with the BBN tagline, printed in trade journals. They loved that. Plus I was sure that I was the only uncircumcised person (thank God) on the whole campus — separated by the railway tracks leading to North Station in Boston. So, I also felt that I was the ‘Token Gentile‘ — and I wasn’t even a Gentile! There was a genius there who tracked sunset and sunrise for Boston and sent us e-mails reminding us of the various flavors of ‘shortest days’. I still get these e-mails from him … which is what reminded me to go check the times for New Hampshire. BBN was a great place.
